A
s I am sure you know by
now, last September I
announced my plan to
retire after holding this
job for 26 years. I told the
Board leadership that I would stay
on to assure a smooth transition and
so I will be around until Spring when
they expect the selection process for
my replacement to be completed. So
this is not my farewell speech, but
it will be my last chance to address
all of you at our annual gala, so of
course I am going to reminisce. That is
what a Silver Anniversary is all about.
I remember clearly our first
Endowment Gala. It was held at the
Marriott Hilton by the Airport. Marsha
Slane and Esther Culp were Co-Chairs
of the event. Jane Duncan was in
charge of entertainment. Carroll Ann
and I were new to this community.
What amazed me that night, and
continues to amaze me to this day, is
the feeling of pride and enthusiasm
for our hospital that I felt in the room
that evening.
George Marsh was the chairman of the
Endowment Committee, and he was
followed in later years by Bill Horney,
Buck Kester, Marsha Slane, Charlie
Greene, David Hayworth, Frosty Culp,
Brad Burris and finally Elizabeth
Aldridge and Jane Duncan. At that
point the Endowment Committee
became a part of the Development
program, but the annual Gala had
become a tradition. What amazing
leadership for this wonderful effort.
Of course I saved all of those speeches
and started to look through them as
I reminisced about this wonderful
annual gathering. I broke the speeches

Amazing Journey
A look back at 25yrs
“I think it will be fun to reflect on some of the things I
have shared with you over the years – as I look back
it is pretty amazing.” - Jeff Miller
For 26 years, Jeff Miller helped High
Point Regional maintain its status as a
Nationally recognized Hospital.
over 25 years down into three parts
or phases:
The first phase is from 1989 to 1995
and I call that phase the program
development time. We had a new
Regional Hospital, and we needed the
programs to live up to our name. So
over those six years, we announced
the development of Open Heart
Ground-breaking Ceremony for the Ambulatory Surgery Center, March 27, 1990

Surgery, New Cardiac Cath Labs, the
Phillips Cancer Pavilion, the Smith
Behavioral Health Center, a new Joint
Venture Surgery Center, and last, but
not least, a Community Clinic. All of
these new programs were possible
because we were adding truly
outstanding physicians to our staff.
More importantly, these programs
were embraced by the community
and supported by you through your
support of the Endowment. By 1995 our
Endowment had grown to $8.8 Million.
The second phase is from 1996
to 2004 and I call that phase the
construction time. We wanted to
provide state of the art facilities for
new and existing programs. It was
clear to us that when you put all

the pieces of a service together,
the quality improves. By the
way, in 1996 Cornerstone Health
Care was formed and we had an
organized physician partner for these
services. So the Board of Trustees
embarked on a $120 Million dollar
building program. The result over the
next seven years was the construction
of the Carolina Regional Heart Center,
the Hayworth Cancer Center, the
Esther R. Culp Women’s Center,
the Inpatient Rehab Unit, a new
Behavioral Health Unit, a renovated
Joint Replacement Center (the Joint
Camp), an expanded Emergency
Department, an employee Day Care
Center, a new Medical Office Building,
two parking decks, The Millis Regional
Health Education Center, and last
but not least, a Medically Supervised
Fitness Center! Along the way George
W. Bush came to visit in 2002 and we
finished our building projects just in
time to celebrate our 100th birthday
in 2004. The Endowment reached
$16 million in 2004 all thanks to you!
The third and final phase was from
2005 to 2012 which I call the quality
time. We had the programs, we had
the facilities, we had a great medical
staff and wonderful coworkers. We
were ready to shoot for the stars in
terms of our results. We adopted the
Malcolm Baldrige National Quality
Program as our business model and
began to measure everything. It didn’t
take long to show results. In 2006 we
were recognized by Thomson Reuters
as a top 100 performing hospital
in the nation for the improvements
we showed in performance. In 2011
we were again recognized by that
group as one of the top 50 Heart and
Vascular hospitals in the country.
We have continually been recognized
over recent years as the leading
nonacademic cancer program in
the Triad. Our vision of exceptional
care for cancer patients had come
to life. Finally, in 2012 we were
recognized by US News and World
Report as the fourth best hospital
in the state in terms of our clinical
results. The only facilities that
beat us out were UNC, Duke and
Baptist. By the way, the Endowment
Fund reached $29 million dollars last
year. You can see why I have always
loved doing these speeches.
Jeff Miller sits down with President George W. Bush and other leaders in 2002.
I guess one question I asked myself
is which Gala moment was the most
special for me! I decided that there
were two that I look back on with the
most pride:
The first occurred on June 19, 2001.
High Point Regional was given Magnet
Hospital status by the American
Nurses Credentialing Center. This is
the gold standard of nursing care in
the nation. This was the first of three
times we have received this four year
designation, which is unprecedented in
our industry. In the last twelve of my
twenty five speeches I have stood here
with the confidence that we have the
finest nursing staff in the nation. Don’t
ever take that for granted. I assure you
that I don’t.
The second happened on November
15, 2012. At our Gala last year we
introduced the leadership from UNC
Health Care and our Board’s decision
to become a part of the UNC system
in April of 2013. Dr. Bill Roper, CEO of
the UNC Health Care System, was here
that evening and he committed to you
that he would work with us and the
other partner hospitals in our system
to become the premier academic
health system in the nation. Not the
state, the nation! Over the last year as
we have come to know the leadership
from UNC, their culture and their
commitment, there is no doubt in my
mind that our system will achieve that
goal. Our Board of Trustees, once again,
made the right decision. Our future is
full of wonderful possibilities. I assure
you Carroll Ann and I will be back next
year for the 2014 Gala – I can’t wait
to hear the exciting results the new
President will be reporting. It has been
my pleasure and my honor to be with
you all of these years. As I closed my
first speech on September 23, 1989,
I say again “We look forward to the
future with you – we cannot survive in
the future without you.”

25th Hospital Gala
Anniversary
This was our Silver Anniversary Event
A
crowd of nearly 300 elegantly dressed special friends of High Point Regional attended
the 25th Silver Anniversary Gala held in November at the High Point Country Club.
Event Chair Tina VanLandingham and the Gala committee planned a wonderfully
festive evening kicked off with a cocktail reception followed by a sumptuous dinner and
special program featuring President Jeff Miller reminiscing on the past 25 years of development
at the hospital.
The highlight of the evening was a heartfelt welcome delivered via video by Bill Horney, founding
hospital Board member and the very first Gala Chair Marsha Slane. Marsha along with Elizabeth
Aldridge were specially recognized as Honorary Co-Chair’s of the Silver Anniversary event for
their 25+ years of dedication and support of the hospital.
Foundation Chairman Reid Marsh closed the evening by extending his appreciation on behalf of
the Board of Directors to all who contribute funds to support High Point Regional, our medical
staff and all who come to us in need of health care.

local businesses, organizations, and individuals in order
to create awareness about heart health and provide hope,
support, and financial assistance to patients living with
heart or lung disease.
The Rives Race is named in memory of Warren Rives,
Jr., a former hospital Board Member who died of a heart
attack at the young age of 41 in 1990. His daughter,
Olivia Rives Kiefer, continues to serve as Chair of the
event, and the Rives family continues to provide
unconditional support of the race.
The annual 3.1 mile road race and fun run is held the
third Saturday in September every year.
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and
community, over $33,000 was raised
to provide Heart Strides scholarships
for patients who otherwise could not
participate in this vital rehabilitation program. The Heart Strides program helps
more than 300 patients per year in High

High Point Regional offers to cancer patients every day.
LoveLine, High Point Regional’s cancer patient support program gives cancer patients,
and their families, financial assistance to meet short-term critical needs not covered
by other resources. Funding for this incredible program comes solely from donations
made by individuals, organizations, and businesses in the High Point community.
Donations to the LoveLine Fund, welcome at any time of the year, are the perfect way

They were with me every step of the way
When my doctor told me, “you have cancer”, I was speechless. Those are three words you never want to hear.
From that point until today, the staff at High Point Regional has been with me through every step of my recovery.
With their help, I not only beat cancer, but they also saw me through a battle with blood clots on my lungs and the
discovery that I am diabetic. Today, I am 60 pounds lighter, I work out two hours a day at The Fitness Center at
High Point Regional and I’m in the best shape of my life.
I am Living Proof of Total Care.
