Few places in the world offer as perfect a combination
of isolated desert island paradise, breathtaking underwater
scenery and a real sense of getting off the tourist trail
as Seram. Eric Randolph unearths a rare and beautiful
gem among the Maluku Islands.

SURROUNDS
It has become ever harder
in this era of mass tourism
and global connectivity to
nd a truly secluded paradise.
Sure, we can scale a mountain
or disappear into the jungle if
we want to get away from the
crowds, but for those of us who
prefer our holidays to involve
lounging on deckchairs and
taking the occasional dip in
the ocean, it can be hard to nd
a spot that has not already been
overrun by like≠min ded tourists
and rapid development.
Seram is different. It combines astonishing
beauty with a real sense of being off the beaten
track. I feel almost criminal revealing its secret
to the world, but I have the blessing of the
locals, who are keen to share knowledge of the
islandí s treasures with the world.
The Maluku Islands were once the birthplace
of European colonisation, where explorers
from Britain and Holland competed for
control of the rare and hugely valuable spices
that grew on the regioní s trees. Although the
Dutch did establish a series of ports and
religious missions on Seram in the 16th and 17th
centuries as part of their struggles with local
chieftains and European competitors, the
island did not receive as much attention as its
neighbours in Banda, home to nutmeg, which
was touted as a cure for the plague,
and the volcanic islands to the north
where cloves could be found.
For the locals, however, Seram has always
been Nusa Ina ñ the ë Mother Islandí ñ which
most Malukans consider to be their original
ancestral home. Its bizarre geology supports
this motherly reputation; the great, imposing
mountains that rise as high as 3,000m give it
an air of power and majestic authority over the
surrounding islands. Seram sits at the centre
of several small tectonic plates, including its
own microplate that has twisted by around
80 degrees over the last eight million years,
forcing the rock up into those commanding,
rainforest-clad peaks. Development has come
slowly to Seram. The rst road was only built
through the island in 2007. Up to then, the
only way to get from one side to the other was
to take a boat all the way around ñ trying to go
through the middle required serious jungle
survival skills and a very sharp machete.
As our car makes its way down this
immaculate road, the scenery on either
side still looks barely ruffled by the recent
intrusion. We see no more than one or two
other cars on the drive, and when we stop to
admire the lush scenery we are immediately
engulfed by the sense of being deep in jungle
wilderness; giant, cobalt-blue butter ies
utter past to the sharp shrill of cicadas
amid the canopy.
Seram, like many of the
surrounding waters among the
Maluku Islands, is one of the worldí s
greatest dive spots. There are
well-established dive operators on
the western coast of the island, and
some incredible snorkelling to be
done in Sawai Bay. Look out for such
exotic creatures as the ë psychedelic
frog shí , bright blue star sh and,
if youí re lucky, huge sea turtles.

We had arrived from nearby Ambon Island
on the ferry, landing at Seramí s sleepy capital
of Masohi before heading across the island
towards our destination in the far north.
As we reach the northern coast, the driver
pulls up alongside a bluff that looks out
across the bay, and I nd myself actually
laughing out loud in shock at the absurdly
beautiful view before us.
The Sawai Bay is a huge curved sweep
of tranquil waters ringed by enormous
mountains that rise up spectacularly all along
the coast. Their size is almost impossible for
the human mind to compute. From up here,
the huts that will soon be our home look

minuscule and the beach just a thin thread
of golden white where the limestone rocks
crash into the clear blue of the water.
We descend to the village of Saleman below.
Children with huge grins and wild hair greet
us warmly as we pull up along the quay, and
we throw our luggage into a narrow boat that
will take us the ve minutes across the bay to
the resort. I re ect on how we got here: the
ight from Java to Ambon, an hourí s taxi to the
port, the two-hour ferry to Masohi and a
90-minute drive through the heart of Seram.
As our boat pulls up at the pontoon, there is no
doubt that it was worth every minute. This is
about as remote as a beach paradise can get ñ
no TV, no Internet and a long way back to
civilisation ñ but the only concern is that you
may never wish to leave.
There are only seven huts at the Ora Beach
Resort. They are perched on stilts above the
water and accessed by a wooden walkway.
Lying on the deckchair of the balcony feels like
being suspended over the most untouched and
beautiful stretch of water imaginable. The
water is crystal clear, and wherever you stand
in the resort you can stare down at a dazzling
array of coral and tropical sh below your
feet. The rooms are simple but comfortable,
and the staff are wonderfully friendly.
I could sit staring at the scenery for
my entire stay, but there are plenty of
excursions to do from here. We start with
the Seven Islands (actually six, but no one has
updated the name since one was submerged
around a century ago). They lie an hour or
so out in the Seram Sea (as if Ora Beach was
not remote enough). These islands are totally
uninhabited puffs of brilliant-white sand and
palm trees poking out of pure turquoise
waters. If you had to invent the most perfect
archetype of a desert island, you would come
up with this. And most astonishing is that
we have the place entirely to ourselves.

A little out from the islands, we dive into
the perfect ocean for some snorkelling.
This is a renowned dive spot, but even oating
on the surface the view is breathtaking. From
the absurd pout of the butter y sh to the
neon tiger stripes of the angel sh, there
are hundreds of incredible creatures
darting around the strictly technicolour
coral landscape.
From our base in Ora, we also make time to
visit the nearby stilt village ñ a friendly little

On our nal day, we attempt a visit to some
of the remote tribes that live inland in the
jungle. Buoyed by the adventurous streak of
our journey so far, we decide to take a boat
up one of the rivers to get there, a route
that has not really been tested before.
Our boat heads across the open waters and
into the wide opening of the river. On either
side are vast mangrove trees and palm fronds.
We spot several exotic birds ñ Seram is home
to an incredible array of birdlife including
parrots, cockatoos and over a dozen unique
species ñ and come across local villagers
tucked into clearings along the riverbank,
hacking away at Sagu trees and running their
pulp through a complex contraption made
from bamboo and palm leaves to make the
local rice-like staple, also called Sagu.
After a couple of hours heading upstream,
we start to realise that we have bitten off
more than we can chew. This is not a
well-worn tourist trail ñ this is real, wild
jungle. The waters grow more swampy,
the insects bigger and more numerous,
and we nd ourselves frequently tangled
in mangrove roots as the river narrows
and the current grows stronger. Reluctantly,
we turn back, but we are encouraged by the
con rmation that we have truly broken
away from the beaten track, that this
really is a place where luxurious paradise
meets a genuine sense of adventure.

the bizarre and impressive sight of thousands
of Lusiala birds streaming out of a hole in
the mountainside. They are said to carry
the souls of human ancestors, and no one
has yet g ured out where these bat-like
birds go at night.

Twitchers (bird-watching
enthusiasts), stop and listen
anywhere on Seram and youí ll soon
make out the exotic sounds of the
islandí s incredible birdlife, much of
which is uniquely indigenous to the
island. Attempts to nd them can
lead to serious expeditions into the
jungle undergrowth, but there lies
the promise of extremely rare
species such as the Salmon-crested
Cockatoo, Malukan King Parrot,
Lazuli King sher and much more.

PARADISE
There are few feelings as blissful
as lying on the sands of one of the
Seven Islands ñ a short boat ride
out from Sawai Bay. These
incredibly perfect desert islands ñ
all soft, powdery white sand and
coconut trees leaning at precipitous
angles ñ are all the more luxurious
because you often have them all
to yourself. Soak up the sun or
wander into the impossibly
turquoise waters and feel the
true meaning of paradise.

Namun Seram tidaklah sama. Di tempat ini,
Anda bisa mendapatkan kecantikan alam
serta sensasi berada di tempat yang masih
belum terjamah. Ada sedikit rasa bersalah
telah membocorkan rahasia keindahan pulau
ini, namun penduduk sekitar tak keberatan
membagikan rahasia tentang harta
terpendam pulau ini kepada dunia.
Kepulauan Maluku adalah tempat pertama
yang dijajah bangsa Eropa, di mana para
penjelajah Inggris dan Belanda saling bersaing
memenangkan monopoli rempah-rempah
langka yang tumbuh di daerah-daerah
sekitarnya. Walaupun Belanda telah
membangun serangkaian pelabuhan dan

Pembangunan pulau ini tergolong tak terlalu
pesat. Jalan pertama yang melintasi pulau itu
dibangun pada tahun 2007. Sebelumnya,
satu-satunya cara untuk melintasinya adalah
dengan menggunakan perahu dari satu sisi
pulau ñ melintasi bagian tengah pulau itu
membutuhkan kemampuan bertahan hidup
di hutan yang luar biasa, dan juga parang yang
sangat tajam.
Mobil yang kami naiki meluncur di jalanan
yang masih mulus ini, membelah hutan yang
seolah tak terpengaruh oleh campur tangan
manusia baru-baru ini. Tak banyak mobil
terlihat, hanya tampak satu atau dua buah
yang melintas. Saat berhenti menikmati
pemandangan, kami serasa diselimuti oleh

kehidupan alam liar di tengah hutan ñ
seekor kupu-kupu raksasa berwarna biru
terang melintas di tengah-tengah suara
derikan keras jangkrik yang bersembunyi
di rimbunan pohon di sekitarnya.
Setelah berangkat dari Pulau Ambon
terdekat, kapal feri yang kami naiki tiba
di Masohi, Ibu Kota Seram yang sepi untuk
kemudian menuju bagian utara pulau ini.
Saat tiba di pesisir utara, pengemudi kami
tiba-tiba berhenti mendadak di pinggiran
bukit terjal yang memperlihatkan
pemandangan di seberang teluk. Saya
terkaget-kaget namun entah kenapa pada
akhirnya tertawa terbahak-bahak saat
melihat keindahan alam yang luar biasa ini.
Teluk Sawai adalah sebuah teluk besar
dengan perairan yang tenang dikelilingi
oleh pegunungan-pegunungan raksasa di
sepanjang pesisir; rasanya mustahil untuk
mengira-ngira ukuran gunung tersebut
sebenarnya. Dari atas sini, pondok-pondok
yang nantinya akan kami tinggali terlihat
sangat mungil, pantainya nampak seperti
benang putih keemasan berbatasan
dengan karang-karang yang dihempas
air biru jernih.
Kami turun ke sebuah desa bernama
Saleman. Anak-anak tersenyum lebar
dan menyapa hangat saat kami tiba di
pelabuhan. Kami melempar barang bawaan
kami ke sebuah perahu kecil dan sempit
yang akan membawa kami menyebrang
teluk selama lima menit menuju resor.
Sejenak, saya merenungkan bagaimana
kami bisa sampai ke tempat ini ñ terbang
dari Jawa ke Ambon, naik taksi selama satu
jam ke pelabuhan, naik kapal feri ke Masohi
dan berkendara selama 90 menit melewati
Seram. Saat kapal merapat, ada keyakinan
terbesit kalau semua ini layak dilalui.
Inilah pantai di tengah surga yang paling
terpencil ñ tak ada TV, internet dan jauh
dari peradaban ñ satu-satunya hal yang
harus dikhawatirkan adalah keinginan
untuk menetap selamanya.

Saya bisa saja menghabiskan waktu
dengan duduk santai menikmati
pemandangan selama tinggal di sini,
namun ada banyak kegiatan yang harus
dilakukan. Kami memulainya dari Pulau
Tujuh (jumlah sebenarnya adalah enam,
tapi tak seorangpun memperbarui
namanya padahal satu pulaunya telah
tenggelam sekitar satu abad lalu). Letaknya
jauh di tengah Laut Seram, sekitar satu
jam perjalanan (padahal Pantai Ora
sudah cukup terpencil). Pulau-pulau yang
dipenuhi oleh pasir putih yang lembut
dan lambaian nyiur di tepi laut nan biru
ini tidak berpenghuni. Inilah model pulau
terpencil paling sempurna yang mungkin
ingin Anda ciptakan. Dan yang paling
menyenangkan, pulau ini terasa seperti
milik kami sendiri.
Kami menghabiskan waktu ber-snorkeling
di lautan yang sempurna ini, sedikit jauh
dari pulau-pulau tersebut. Lokasi
penyelaman ini cukup terkenal dengan
pemandangan bawah lautnya yang sangat
menakjubkan, bahkan dapat terlihat jelas
hanya dengan mengapung di atas air. Ada
banyak mahluk laut menakjubkan yang
hilir mudik di antara hamparan karang
berwarna-warni, dari ikan kupu-kupu
yang berbibir tebal nan seksi hingga
angel sh dengan garis-garis di
badannya yang berwarna cerah.

Berbaring di kursi malas balkon ini rasanya
seperti tengah melayang di atas alam
perawan dan bentangan air yang indah tak
terbayangkan. Airnya sejernih kristal dan
di manapun Anda berdiri, Anda akan dapat
melihat berbagai jenis koral dan warnawarni ikan tropis yang hilir mudik di
bawah kaki Anda. Walaupun sederhana,
kamarnya sangatlah nyaman dan para
pegawainya pun ramah-ramah.

Dari Ora, kami juga menyempatkan
diri mengunjungi desa terapung terdekat ñ
sebuah desa nelayan yang dibangun
di atas air. Dan saat senja menjemput,
kami kembali ke Saleman untuk melihat
pemandangan aneh tapi menarik di mana
ribuan burung Lusiala menghambur keluar
dari sebuah lubang di pegunungan. Konon,
mereka membawa jiwa-jiwa nenek moyang
manusia dan tak ada seorang pun yang
tahu apa yang dilakukan burung mirip
kelelawar itu di malam hari.
Di hari terakhir, kami mencoba
mengunjungi suku pedalaman yang
tinggal jauh di dalam hutan. Didorong
oleh kesuksesan petualangan sebelumnya,
kami memutuskan untuk menggunakan
kapal melewati jalur sungai yang sebelumnya
tidak pernah dilewati. Kapal yang kami naiki
mengarungi perairan terbuka dan masuk ke
mulut sungai. Rimbunan pohon bakau yang
lebat dan pucuk daun-daun nyiur menghias
kedua sisi sungai. Kami melihat beberapa
burung tropis ñ Seram adalah rumah burungburung liar yang mengagumkan, termasuk
burung beo, kakaktua dan juga lusinan
spesies unik lainnya ñ dan juga beberapa
penduduk lokal yang berkumpul di pinggiran
sungai, memotong pohon Sagu dan
memproses buburnya melalui sebuah alat
yang rumit terbuat dari bambu dan daun
palem untuk membuat sagu, makanan
pokok mereka.
Setelah dua jam menyusuri sungai ke
arah hulu, kami sadar sudah terlalu jauh
melangkah. Ini bukanlah jalur penjelajahan
untuk wisatawan ñ yang kami lalui adalah
alam liar di tengah hutan belantara. Airnya
semakin berlumpur, serangga-serangganya
semakin besar dan beragam, dan kami
semakin sering tersangkut di akar bakau
di sungai yang semakin mengecil dengan
arus yang semakin kencang. Mau tak mau
kami harus kembali, namun kami lega
karena telah berhasil menjelajahi tempattempat terpencil. Pulau ini adalah
surganya para petualang.
