It was great to see everyone back at school this week and safely returned from spring break. It was neat to hear the students share about their spring break, whether right here in Holland or in other places around the country. If your house is anything like mine, spring sports, recitals, warmer weather, and the fact that it is light later makes it difficult for us to stick with a good, healthy school routine. Here are some ideas for you (and me!) to help keep children focused on learning for the last eight weeks of school. Make attendance job #1 Let your children know that unless they are sick, they must go to school. Try to schedule routine dentist and doctor appointments for after school hours. If possible, take family vacations during school breaks. Show you care Want your children to know that you’re interested in their learning? Talk about their school activities and projects. Attend as many school events as you can. If homework and after-school activities conflict, speak up: “I know you have baseball practice this evening, but homework comes first. After you finish, I’ll take you to practice.” Keep it upbeat Try to set a positive example for your children; even when your own day has been difficult. Instead of saying, “I had a hard day at work, I’ll never get my project done,” try, “Work was hard today but I made some progress on my project.” If you show a positive attitude about your work, your youngsters may feel better about their own! Maintain bedtimes It is great to be outside playing after school now that spring is here. Students still need to get enough sleep to be ready for school. Please try to maintain bedtimes for the remainder of the school year! Happy spring! The Lakewood Community dressed in blue on April 15 for our first "Light It Up Blue Day". The worldwide day is celebrated on April 2, however due to our Spring Break we are celebrating today! ~ Kelli Miller and Andrea Dekker AI Resource Teachers The Student Council sponsored an opportunity for our Lakewood community to help a local organization that helps people with autism - Benjamin's Hope! On Light It Up Blue Day, students were able to use the Fish Philosophy of Being There by bringing in a cash donation. During lunchtime, the Student Council showed appreciation for any donation $1 or more with a yummy THANK YOU cupcake. Stay tuned to learn how much we were able to donate! JrFLL at Lakewood (6 students per team): Next year, I would like to expand the FIRST Robotics program at Lakewood to include a JrFLL team. JrFLL uses Lego kits to allow children to solve a real world problem, and present their research to an audience using a "show me" poster. JrFLL is for students entering 3rd grade next year. If you have a child that is interested in the program please fill in form at http://goo.gl/forms/pBsA0OZWmh Please also indicate if you are willing to help coach the team. Students of parents that coach will be guaranteed a spot on the team. Two FIRST Lego League, FLL, teams at Lakewood next year (10 students per team): Since I will be leading the startup of the Jr Lego League team, and since Susan Brown will be "graduating" to middle school programs with her children, we will need ideally 4 coaches/mentors to lead the two FLL teams next year. FIRST Lego League is a great opportunity for students to learn life skills such as teamwork, logic, leadership all while having a lot of fun. Students in teams of 10, are given six weeks to solve a real world problem and present the solution to judges at the competition. Students also work to develop a robot that autonomously solves challenges on a game board. FLL is for students entering 4th and 5th grade next year. If you have a child that is interested in the program please fill in form at http://goo.gl/forms/pBsA0OZWmh Please also indicate if you are willing to help coach the team. Students of parents who coach will be guaranteed a spot on the team. Music Notes from Mr. Loughrin April is JAM! “Every April, Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) highlights the glories of jazz as both a historical and a living treasure. Here is one special month to draw greater public attention to the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz and its importance to American culture. Musicians, concert halls, schools, colleges, museums, libraries and public broadcasters are encouraged to offer special programs during this month.” ~http://americanjazzmuseum.org/event/jazz-appreciation-month-jam-2014/ There are many terrific links to learn about Jazz and its place in American history. A good start would be to log onto Washington D.C.’s Smithsonian Institute website for jazz http://americanhistory.si.edu/smithsonian-jazz/education. There you will find a variety of links that allow students to explore this great American art form! Here are links to two of my favorite jazz songs: “Sing, Sing, Sing” by Benny Goodman and his orchestra: https://youtu.be/r2S1I_ien6A, and “Take 5”, by saxophone great, Dave Brubeck: https://youtu.be/PHdU5sHigYQ Whitecaps reminder: Once your child brings home his or her voucher, please fill out the back of it and send it back to school by Monday April 18th, if you plan on attending the group outing on May 15th. If you’re not going on the 15th, still fill out the back but do not send these vouchers to school. You will have to send them in on your own. Enjoy! Links from the Lab and Library By Miss Marco Library Media/Technology Specialist Moodle reminder: A lot of students have been expressing interest in using websites that are in my Moodle courses at home so here is how you can get to these courses: Just go to: moodle.westottawa.net Students will then need to type in their user name which is their log in ID. Then their password which is wo for most students. Internet Safety Tip of the week: Protect your children from offensive “pop-ups” by setting your browser to block popups, disabling Java on your computer and/or using blocking software. Ad blockers such as AdBlock can also keep kids from seeing banner ads with inappropriate content. Source: www.mediasmarts.ca Greetings friends and families, Hope you all had a great spring break. I certainly did. I love my job, but I also love a break and a chance to revive and re-energize. During April we will be doing a bit of spring fitness testing and also helping the kids develop some volleyball skills. I like to do a follow up round of fitness testing to see if the kids improve and to keep them on their toes about the need to always try to remain fit. Have a great week and thanks again for your awesome support. Mr. de PS. Mile run for the 3rd through 5th graders when we get back! Biking Camp Update: Sessions 3, 4, 5 and 6 are totally full but we still have a few spots open in sessions 1 and 2. We would love to have your child join us if you are still considering it. Registrations are available at school. Summer is coming! Mr. de Spanish Spotlight Spring is finally in the air and it is a perfect time for kindergartners to learn how to say different bugs in Spanish! Next week we will learn words such as mariposa (butterfly), hormiga (ant), and abeja (bee). Students will have fun playing games, coloring bugs, and listening to bug stories. We will read a few books by Eric Carle that connect well. The Very Busy Spider (araña) is a favorite! Art Makes You Smart! Art teacher Miss TenBarge suggests that if you want to know what your child is learning in art and keep up to date with art shows, check out her virtual gallery and find great links with ideas for art projects at home.
