Wild Dear Chamber Member, City Council has approved a balanced $60m General Fund operating budget with no increases to millage rates and an increase in fund balance to over $5 million. With a 1.67% increase in taxable values, revenues to the TIFA and DDA Districts will increase although refunds to taxing units will be less as captured funds are used to finance various capital improvements here in the All American City. Among capital improvements planned are water and sewer infrastructure and equipment improvements, a new fire rescue unit, a new DPS tree truck and chipper, and earmarking $1 million in the City’s Major Roads Fund for improvements to Central City Parkway. The City will be selling a cell tower expected to generate $650K in revenue and we look forward to increased revenues from rentals of our City Hall banquet rooms, Farmers & Artisans Marketplace and rooms at the Jefferson Barns Vitality Center. The City has partnered with Community Connections, Inc. to develop an assessment of the City in all aspects of community services. Our goal is for Westland to earn the prestigious Community of a Lifetime award. We seek your feedback as we work together for a high quality of life in the City of Westland. There are many wonderful upcoming events this summer. We will be having our first Community Gathering at Corrado Park on Tuesday, July 14 at 5:30 p.m. This event will feature hot dogs and refreshments as well as fun summer activities. There are also two summer concerts that are planned at the Farmers & Artisans Marketplace, one on Friday, July 17 whose headliner is Allen Turner and the Steel Horses Band and the August concert will also be the City’s fifth annual Blues, Brews & BBQ scheduled for August 14-16, 2015. Blues bands include the Alligators, Boa Constrictors, Broken Arrow, Dirty Basement Blues, Front Street Blues and the Randy Brock Group, performing along with headliner Soul Men who will perform Saturday night. The Westland’s Farmers & Artisans Market continues on Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. and until 7:00 p.m. and featuring fresh, healthy produce, homemade food items and crafters selling everything from recycled yard art and plants to jewelry. The Westland Municipal Golf Course and Grille are also open for business. Jaycee Chapters from all over the state took part in training, competed in professional skills competitions, and celebrated chapters as they receive awards for their hard work in the first trimester of the year. The newly re-born Westland Area Jaycees were in attendance and managed to steal the show as they walked off with top honors! The chapter took several honors in the state. The Easter EggStravaganza won first place in the sustaining project category where the project was reviewed by an impartial judging team and secondly by an intensive interview and presentation process. Westland also took 2nd place over all in the civic leadership certification process following very close behind the Kalamazoo Jaycees. Even local Westland Area Jaycee member Callie Hubbard won the “Film it!” video interview competition while the Chapter President earned the highest individual honor of all, the Michigan Presidential Medallion. The big award of the night was the Overall Top Chapter of the First Trimester. This is a big win for Westland as they continue energize the chapter and create opportunities for young people to make positive impact in the community and themselves. "I am grateful for the contributions of the Westland Area Jaycees under the leadership of President James Hart to further the mission of the Junior Chamber movement. Being recognized as the top local organization in Michigan for the first trimester of 2015 is a testa- 800.321.8570 • ment to their commitment to the Jaycees, their members, and their community." Matthew Sernau, 2015 President, Michigan Junior Chamber The Jaycees continue to work closely with the community and the citizens to enrich the life of the Westland Area and promote those that work, live, and play there. The membership in the chapter is growing and accepting membership applications. Prospective members are encouraged to go to www.westlandareajaycees.org for more information. The Westland Area Junior Chamber exists for active young citizens ages 21 to 40, who bring energy and insight to solving problems. Our mission is to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change in their communities. zealcredit union.org Page 6 Westland Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation Hosts Christmas in July Fundraiser The All American Christmas in July event is going to be in the Grand Room at the new Westland City Hall on Thursday, July 23 from 6:00 P.M. till 9:00 P.M. Space Reservation Deadline Drawing Near for 2015-2016 Chamber’s Member Directory and Community Guide Advertising space for the 2015 - 2016 issue of the Westland Chamber of Commerce Community Profile and Membership Directory is drawing to a close. We see this as a tremendous marketing opportunity for our members to grow their business, and show their commitment to our community. Our publishing partner, NovoPrint USA is widely recognized for their quality publications of maps and magazines for Chambers of Commerce throughout Michigan. Back by popular demand, the Directory will once again be the convenient BOOKLET size of 8-1/2 x 5-1/2, and FULL COLOR throughout. This high quality magazine will feature local community information, color photographs featuring Westland and the surrounding area and advertisements to showcase Westland Chamber member businesses. We are very excited about this ALL NEW project, offering a very affordable marketing opportunity, and a chance for our members to get their message out to our City and surrounding area in full color. The magazines will be made available to the community in print and online, in an interactive format that will link from the Chamber web site. Advertisers that are included will have “hot links” to their individual web sites through this online E-zine. To see how this online feature works, please visit our www.westlandchamber.com to view the current issue.
