The
Mayor’s Corner
By Westland Mayor
William R. Wild
Last month was certainly eventful as we gathered to raise funds for the American
Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, to Dine on the Vine and to tour the recently renovated Police Department during their Open House. We also celebrated the grand
openings of several new Westland businesses including Tropical Smoothie, Zifit,
Alpha Screening & Drug Testing, and Good Deeds Upscale Thrift Shop. Joining
them is a new Firehouse Subs, 5 Below and Menchies Frozen Yogurt; and certainly,
I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the reinvestment Bed, Bath & Beyond
has made in their relocation to Westridge Shopping Center. It is gratifying to see
so many choose Westland as the community in which to invest and hopefully, succeed professionally and economically. I wish all of these businesses the best of luck
in their endeavors.
Westland is home to countless talented and qualified individuals who may be
seeking new employment. If your business is looking to tap into this talent pool,
please consider sharing your job openings on our Westland Works page on the city’s
website. Simply contact my office with the description of the position and we will
be sure to post it.
Westland's premier annual event, Blues, Brews and BBQ is quickly approaching
and will take place on August 5th and 6th. As in years past, thousands will be
treated to some of the Detroit Blues Society’s most popular acts, amazing barbeque
and a wide variety of Michigan’s most popular micro-brews.
This year marks a special milestone as Westland celebrates 50 years as a city. In
commemoration of this momentous event, this year’s Blues, Brews and Barbeque
will be bigger and better than ever before with Westland’s own American Idol and
country music star Josh Gracin headlining the event and a historic firework celebration on Saturday evening. Proceeds from this event are donated back to area
non-profits and community groups who volunteer to help plan, organize and operate
the event. To date, over $150,000 has been donated to these local organizations.
As you determine what your annual community outreach activities and sponsorships
will be, we humbly ask that you consider becoming a part of this fun and charitable
event. As a sponsor, your business will be promoted in a comprehensive marketing
strategy that will be featured on radio, TV and creative print advertisements and
signage before and during the event. If you are interested in sponsoring this event,
contact the Westland Chamber of Commerce at (734)326-7222.
I encourage voters to make their voices heard by voting in the August Primary
Election to be held on Tuesday, August 2. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00
p.m. although voters may also choose to vote by absentee ballot. We are privileged
to live in a country that permits us to select our government leaders; please don’t
take that privilege for granted.
Reinvestment in the city’s infrastructure continues with work wrapping up on
Newburgh Rd. and soon we will begin the total replacement of Central City Parkway. Also, Wayne County will soon begin resurfacing Cherry Hill from Wayne Rd
to Merriman. While we are aware of the inconvenience road repairs can make in
adding to your drive time, I hope you’ll agree that these repairs are necessary and
this short-term pain during Michigan’s always limited construction season will lead
to long-term gain throughout the coming years.
And as always, remember to watch WLND, visit the City’s website www.cityofwestland.com, and the City’s Facebook site for the latest on news, services and
events happening in our All American City!
In closing, my family and I wish you and yours a wonderful Independence Day
holiday. Enjoy this all too short warm weather!
Best regards,
William R. Wild, Mayor

Zeal Credit Union Supports Guinness World Record Event on July 23!
For the second year in a row, Zeal Credit Union will support chain reaction builders in their attempt to break the Guinness
World Record for the largest domino circle field and the U.S. record for the longest chain reaction. Zeal Credit Union’s
Incredible Science Machine: World Edition will take place at Westland Shopping Center on July 23, 2016 in Westland,
Michigan.
Zeal Credit Union’s Incredible Science Machine: World Edition will feature more than half a million objects, including
250,000 dominoes and thousands of other common items. The chain reaction will cover an area of more than 5,000
square feet.
Throughout the week beginning July 18, 18 builders from around the world will create the Incredible Science Machine
with Steve Price, a Canton native and recent Michigan State University graduate, who is leading the project. Price and
his chain reaction machines have been featured on national television shows such as “The Rachael Ray Show” and
“America’s Got Talent.”
“We are so excited to work with Steve and his team of builders again this year. It was very inspiring last year to watch
this team come together from around the world, and work to create something that they were truly passionate about,”
said Lisa Fawcett, vice president of marketing for Zeal Credit Union. “As the credit
union for hard working Americans, Zeal understands the hard work and passion required
to pursue a dream of this magnitude. We are
happy to again be part of it.” More details
about the event are available at www.IncredibleScienceMachine.com.

Howe Collision: Celebrating 35 Years in Westland!
Howe Collision Inc. is a family-owned-and-operated auto-body repair
business. Please join us in congratulating Chamber Member Howe
Collision as they celebrate their 35 year in business in Westland!
family Owned and Operated
Brother and sister Darrell Howe and Beth Howe Simmons run the Westland operation together. The Howe family makes it their business to
give you honest, reliable quotes at competitive prices. All work is done
in house and personally inspected by a family member. “We’re aware
that some collision ‘specialists’ practice highway robbery on the side,
so we make sure to keep you fully informed about the work we perform
on your vehicle and how much it's going to cost” explained Beth “we
also offer a lifetime guarantee.” They will even work directly with your
insurance company to ensure you have one less thing to worry about.
very pleasant to deal with and great at communicating info.

Apparently the collision business runs through the blood of this family’s
veins! Approximately 20 years ago Mark Howe and sister Lori Howe
Richardson decided to expand the business and opened a shop in Plymouth. The Howe’s goal is to “give our customers the fastest and best
quality of repairs”. From these testimonials, they must be achieving
their goal!

Parkside Credit Union Awards $3000 in Scholarships
Parkside Credit Union recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to three students for the
2016-2017 school year. Parkside’s
Scholarship Committee reviewed applications from nearly 70 local students,
and selected winners based on the students’ school and community involvement as well as an essay in which the
students detailed their educational and
career goals.
Recipients of the 2016 scholarships are:
• Samantha Best, who graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in 2016 and will be attending Armstrong State University in the fall.
• Soundousse Zouani, who graduated from Plymouth High School in 2016 and will be attending Wayne State University in the fall.
• Stefani Taskas, who graduated from Northville High School in 2015 and will be entering her sophomore year at Michigan State University.
Parkside Management presented scholarship checks to the recipients at the 11th Annual Charity Car Show, an event held at Westland Shopping
Center on June 4. The event raised over $2,000 for the Lyman Foundation, which will be used to provide program enrichments and curriculum
support for the Burger School for Students with Autism.
