Did you know that there are laws regarding Service Animals in the
place of businesses?
On October 20, 2015, Governor Rick Snyder signed house Bill
4313 that modernizes state law and protects those who utilize Psychiatric Service Dogs. House Bill 4313 is a 4 bill package. Senate Bill
298, which was sponsored by Senator David Knezek, makes it a crime
to refuse entry to a person using a service animal, or to assault or cause
harm to a service animal.
The Chamber along with Wayne Ford Civic League, Stiggy Dogs,
Last Day Dog Rescue, Westland Area Jaycees, CHAINED Inc, and
several volunteer hosted a seminar about the new laws and requirements on February, 27, 2016. There are now clearer guidelines forbusiness owners that you should know. What questions you can ask,
what questions you cannot ask. As a result of that several business
owners walked away with valuable information. Thanks again to all
that help put this information together and made that event possible.
If you are interested in learning about this please contact the
Chamber to receive your information packet and posters for your
business.

The
Mayor’s Corner
World Class Care
Right in Your
Own Backyard
By Westland Mayor
William R. Wild
Dear Chamber Member:
The weather is warming and that means the return of fresh, locally
grown produce. The All American Farmers and Artisans Marketplace returns on May 5 and will be held every Thursday from 3:00
p.m. to 7:00 p.m. until October 13. Opening Day of market with
be a chance to celebrate special moms with Mother’s Day just
around the corner. You can shop for Mom at the market and enter
to win a Chamilia limited edition bracelet, donated by Precision
Jewelers.
This is a monumental year for our All American City as Westland
celebrates its 50th anniversary. We have a lot planned to celebrate
this milestone and we begin with an all day Homecoming Celebration on Monday, May 16 at Westland City Hall. We will be bringing back all the former mayors, open the time capsule that was
buried 50 years ago and pay tribute to how far we have come as a
city. If you are a business who is also celebrating your 50th anniversary, please contact my office at (734)467-3200 so we can include you in the program.
Now that we are officially in the spring season, many of you will
be dusting off those golf shoes and it will be just in time for the
opening of the Westland Golf Course. Every week we feature Monday Madness at the Westland Golf Course. It is a lunch and a 9hole game special. You can always find out more by visiting our
website at www.cityofwestland.com or calling the golf course at
(734) 721-6660.
For the sixth year, I am asking Westland businesses to become a
partner on a common goal of introducing Westland's young adults
to the workforce. The "Wild About Youth Works!" Program aims
to prepare Westland's young adults for the workforce by teaching
them the virtue of a strong work ethic, good customer service skills
and financial responsibility. This very successful program will kick
off on Wednesday, May 4th. Your business will benefit from participating in the program by attaining young, tech savvy employees
who have had initial general training and education. All that is required is a commitment to interviewing and hiring at least one student and providing them with at least 16 hours of work per week
for six weeks or more at the minimum wage rate or higher. If you
would like to become a partner or would like more information,
please call the Mayor’s Office at (734)467-3200.
I encourage you to stay connected with us and abreast of what is
going on in Westland. Visit our website regularly and check out our
calendar of events. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
I pride myself on having an open-door policy. I want to hear from
you -- our business community. Don’t hesitate to call my office
with ideas or concerns.

Zeal Credit Union
Uses Team Building
Skills to Help
Forgotten Harvest
What do 10 thousand pounds of carrots look like? The
marketing team at Zeal Credit Union knows. On a recent
Friday afternoon, this team worked as volunteers at Forgotten Harvest in Oak Park, Mich., to repackage large
crates of fresh carrots into grocery bags. Forgotten Harvest is a Detroit area non-profit that rescues surplus, prepared and perishable food that is distributed to
emergency food providers to help feed the hungry.
“It was a fun team building project and made us feel
good to do charitable work for such a worthy organization,” said Lisa Fawcett, vice president of marketing for
Zeal Credit Union. “We got a kick out of the fact that
they had us packaging carrots, and we were all dressed
in our ‘Zeal orange’ logo wear for the occasion.”
Fawcett added that Forgotten Harvest receives a variety of perishable food like carrots, potatoes and other
items and counts on volunteers to help repackage them
for distribution.
Founded in 1990 to fight hunger and waste, Forgotten Harvest services Wayne, Oakland and Macomb
Counties, and is currently the nation’s largest food rescue organization.
Zeal Credit Union, www.zealcreditunion.org, is a
full-service, non-profit financial institution with nearly
60,000 members, assets exceeding $513 million and 11
full-service branch offices in metro Detroit. Members
also have access to more than 5,000 shared branches and
nearly 30,000 ATMs nationwide. Member deposits are
insured to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a U.S. government agency.
We’re Saving Members an
Average of $5,000 in Interest!
An average $1,000 credit card balance could cost you over $2,000
in interest charges! That’s insane! Zeal Credit Union can stop the
insanity with a loan designed for Hard Working Americans like you!
Convert all of your existing loans, from other institutions, including
credit cards, auto loans, store cards and personal loans and you will
save thousands of dollars in interest! It’s the secret weapon for the
Hard Working American!

Men on the Move - Celebrating 25 Years!
Westland Chamber of Commerce member Men on the Move
has come a long way since first opening in 1991 in Westland.
Westland Chamber Board member Gary Bulson is co-owner of
the company along with Gary Wrigley (who also owns Nankin
Hardware). As Men on the Move continued to outgrow their
Westland space and expand their area of service, they looked
for a new location closer to expressways and further north. In
September 2014 they moved to their current location in Livonia
on Merriman road but have continued to stay active in our business community.
Owner/manager Bulson explained, “We are a full service
moving company meaning pretty much whatever you need done
we can do for you. We not only provide local moving service
but long distance as well. As far as other service’s that some of
our customers look for like storage, packing, loading or unloading rental trucks, or just looking to buy boxes and packing sup-
plies we can help with all of that”. Their fleet now includes
seven trucks and have 15 year round and up to 30 employees
during their peak season.
What does he attribute their continued success to? “A lot of
movers are what we call fly by night movers. They don’t have
an office they answer calls though their cell phones, not insured,
not licensed…..Men on the Move isn’t that type of company.
We treat our employees like family and it shows most of our
staff has been here over 15 years including the movers. We just
do good business and treat people right. That is how it is supposed to be and that is how we do it.”
