Abernathy Weekly Review for several
yea rs in the 1930 's. recently sent me a
post card with a remedy for falling
asleep while driving ,
" To make sure you don 't doze off
while driving ." Vic advises. " here 's a
sure way to stay awake , Take off both
your shoes aoo drive wearing your
socks only ,"
Well Vic, thanks for the informa tion
a nd I'll surely apply it "before " I take a
nap while driving.
Are you a ca utious . safe, driver ? If
you a re not . the following s tatistics
reported by the Texas Department of
Public Safety may persuade you to be
so tn the future ,
For instance, from
1775· 1980 .
t ,186,654 Americans died in all the U,S,
wa rs put together, This is a period of
205 years ,
From 1900 -1980 . a period of 80 years,
2,345.865 Americans died in U.S. Highway accidents.
In the Revolutiona ry War 4,435
' Americans died ; the War of 1812 , 2.260
died ; Mexican War 13,283 ; Civil War
529,332 ; Spanish-American War 2 ,446 ;
WWI 116.563 : WWIl 407 ,828: Korea
54,246 and in the Vietnam war 56.261
Americans died.
Over one million more Americans
have died in car accidents in the past 80
years than Americans in all the wars
put together for the past 205 years.'
Here are some additional statistics:
The economic loss suffered from
traffic accidents in Texas for the year
1980 are estimated at $3,010,000 ,000
for this o~ year. This would buy 10.000
homes at $80,000 each, 10,000 refrig- .
erators at $700 each, 10,000 electric
rallies at $600 each, 10 .000 TV sets at
$700 each, 10,000 dish,:"asbers at $500
each, 10 .000 automobll~ at $10,000
~ch , ,1 0,000 central air conditionilll
units at $2,500 each and furnish the
head of each ~ the 10,000 bquaehoIda .
with a bank account of n06,000 .
So,remember, when you let into your '
car to drive to work each day, you are
experiencilll one of the moet danpfoiJa

Jimmy
Lewis. District Conservationist with the Su il Conservation Service , "we a re depleting our irrigation water
at the ra te of an average of 2
feet per year . Cost of energy
is going up and the lowering
of our water table is costing
the farmers more to pump
this water."
Lewis pointed out that surface irrigation systems that
they had checked were 56
percent efficient, whereas
their goa l for efficiency is 80
percent . This loss is due to
ditch losses, ta il water
losses, distribution use in the
furrow length. The average
gross a pplication is 4 .2
inches per acre . Assuming
the above figures a re correct
this would m ea n that onl)'
about 2.2 i nches is going on
the crop.
Li ner stated that all t'On·
servation pra cti ces shoold
be employed to conserve a nd
lengthen the life of irrigation'
water in Hale County.

Harnessing the wind (when it blows) is a possible a uxiliary
source of energy to produce electridt y. Wind chargers presently seem best utilized for charging storage baueries.
River currents, ocean tides, solar heat, goo-thermal and
other exotic sources are being studied .
But today the only sources we can rely on to mt'Ct the demand are gas, coal, hydro. nuclear and conservatio n . Of th ~,
conservation, available in an y weather , is the surest way to
