Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St Joseph’s College,
On Friday last week, the College Leadership Mass was held. The 2011 Student
Representative Council was inducted and presented to the College community.
The following are excerpts from the speeches given by our new school captains in their
inaugural address.
Mr Peter Lyon
Acting Principal
With God’s guidance, we approach the coming year with a positive outlook. I would like

The Responsorial Psalm from today’s mass asks, “What does the Lord require of you?
To act justly, to love mercifully, and to walk humbly with your God.” To do this, we must
live with God each day and not act in ways that are selfish or unfair. God demonstrated
his love for his and so our actions should reflect this in the way we treat others. To walk
humbly we must follow the path that God sets for us and live by his example.

Internet safety presentation helps children stay safe online
Young people today are immersed in digital technologies. They use the internet and
mobile phones to socialise, study, exchange ideas and play. While online activity has
many benefits, there are also risks.
To help your children stay safe online, St Joseph’s College is
hosting a Cybersafety Outreach—Internet Safety Awareness
presentation. Designed for parents, teachers and students, this
presentation is provided by the Australian Communications and
Media Authority (ACMA) as part of a national program of
cybersafety initiatives.
The Cybersafety Outreach—Internet Safety Awareness presentation is thorough and nontechnical. It covers a range of issues including:


the ways children use the internet and emerging technologies.

tips to help children stay safe online.
potential risks for children online, such as cyberbullying, identity theft,
inappropriate contact and exposure to inappropriate content.
The presentation is conducted by an ACMA Cybersafety trainer and is free of charge.
St Joseph’s College is committed to helping students develop appropriate behaviours
when using digital technologies, both at school and home.
The Cybersafety Outreach—Internet Safety Awareness presentation will be held on:
Tuesday 12 October 2010 at 6:30pm
To register your attendance, please contact the College as soon as possible or refer to
the telephone number on the back page of this newsletter. Enrolments will also be
accepted on the night.
Included with today’s newsletter is an information pamphlet from the
Australian Communications and Media Authority (ASMA) on ‘How to
be Phone Smart’. It contains tips for kids and young people as well as
extra information for parents and carers.
Please take the time to read the pamphlet together as a family and
discuss ways you can make your family Phone Smart – and stay safe.

CANONISATION OF BLESSED MARY MACKILLOP
We have only 34 days to go until the canonisation
of Blessed Mary MacKillop. Over the last few
months we’ve shared the story of a remarkable
woman and one who will change the course of
our history by becoming Australia’s first ever
saint.

PARISH YOUTH MASS
Our next Youth Mass will be held
next Sunday, 26 September
in the Holy Family Chapel,
St Joseph’s College,
Doyle Drive, Banora Point
commencing at 5:30pm
As mentioned in an earlier newsletter,
Canonisation is the act by which the Holy Father
declares in a definitive and solemn way that a
Catholic Christian is actually in the glory of
heaven, intercedes for us before the Lord and is
to be publicly venerated by the whole Church.
Youth Mass Dates for the remainder
of 2010 are as follows:
TERM 4:
Mary MacKillop was beatified in 1995 after the recognition of her first miracle – the cure in
1961 of a woman with leukaemia who prayed for the nun’s intercession. In 1993, the Vatican
decreed that Mary MacKillop had cured the woman – or rather that God had cured her through
the intercession of Mary MacKillop.
Father Paul Gardiner, the postulator for Mary MacKillop before Sister Casey, explained: “She
seemed to be cured and then the illness returned. Meanwhile she became pregnant, which is
not a good thing for a leukaemia sufferer. A healthy boy was born on August 8, the anniversary
of Mary MacKillop’s death, and she had another five children over the next 10 or 11 years. The
whole thing was medically surprising.”
Verifying a miracle is a complicated and lengthy process carried out behind closed doors by a
special Vatican committee called the Congregation of the Causes of Saints and includes nonbelievers. The evidence includes the testimony of those involved plus scientific documentation
that must convince experts the cure had no plausible medical explanation.
In 2009 the Vatican endorsed her second miracle: the complete and permanent cure of a
Hunter Valley woman of inoperable lung cancer and secondary cancer of the brain. In the mid1990s, a Hunter Valley woman suffering from terminal cancer was sent home from hospital by
her doctors to die. The mother of five had inoperable lung cancer and secondary cancer of the
brain. All hope was lost, but she and her family prayed constantly to Mary MacKillop, along
with sisters of the Josephite Order.

The woman carried a small picture of the nun with a piece of her habit attached to it. Almost
a year after her diagnosis, she was tested and no cancer was found. Her doctors thought they
had the wrong scans.
According to Sister Maria Casey, the nun in charge of promoting Mary’s canonisation, the
scientific documentation for the second miracle was easy to gather as medical records had
been faithfully kept. The most difficult task was the technicalities. “We spent a lot of time
cross-checking facts and getting doctors’ opinions,” she said.
Mary MacKillop has developed a large following and has been credited with intercession in
many high-profile medical cases.
The Josephite sisters held a 24-hour prayer vigil to help save the lives of Trishna and Krishna,
conjoined Bangladeshi twins who were recently separated during an operation in a Melbourne
hospital. The girls survived the marathon surgery, a fact the sisters attributed in part to the
nuns’ intercession.
In 2003, the Sisters of St Joseph prayed to her to help save Sydney toddler Sophie Delezio, who
suffered horrific burns and lost both feet when a car crashed into her childcare centre.
She was later hit by a car in a separate accident.
The family of David Keohane, an Irish backpacker who was assaulted in Coogee in 2008, also
prayed to MacKillop. This year the 29-year-old emerged from a seven-month coma.
With just 34 days remaining until the Rome Canonisation, to use Mary’s own words:
“Let us, one and all, try to remember why God called us here.” 21.3.1878

Breakfast & Assembly
Next Friday, 24 September, we
bid farewell to our Year 12 students.
Year 12 will have a special year group
breakfast, followed by a whole-school
College Assembly in the Doyle Centre.
Therefore, the College Administration

All envelopes are addressed to the guardian/caregivers and should be received at home with in
a sealed envelope. Today’s newsletter should also accompany that envelope. A school report
will also be made available for teachers to use to assist in the teaching and learning of the
students.
The student report provides information about what the student knows and has achieved in the
areas of Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy. It also provides information
on how the student has performed in relation to other students in his or her year group, and
against the national average and the national minimum standard.
Please keep in mind, while useful, these reports are only a snapshot of your child’s
performance on one day. Additional information for parents can be found on the ACARA and

NIGHT OF NOTABLES
Last Wednesday saw another wonderful
example of the result of hard work and
cooperation between staff and students. The
annual ‘Night of Notables’, once again, was
an outstanding success.
Students did a great deal of research and
much creative thinking to achieve such a high
standard in representing their chosen
notable. A feature of this year’s night was
the number of students who chose a notable
not previously represented.
Congratulations to all Year 9 students on an
excellent Night of Notables, particularly for
the cooperation exhibited throughout last
Wednesday.
DEBATING NEWS
Last Friday our Year 7 debating team
travelled to Grafton for a debate-off as
St Joseph’s and Holy Trinity, Inverell won all
three of their debates, and received the
same performance points, at the previous
regional final day. Our team of Tom Condon,
Alyssa Malone, Jordan Kemp and Jordyn Gray
performed extremely well in what was a very
close debate, but Inverell won on the day.
This Friday our Year 9 and 10 teams will
attend their regional debating day at
Murwillumbah. We wish them well. Thank you
to Ms Priddis and Mr Connolly for coaching
these two teams.

REDUCE RISK - INCREASE STUDENT KNOWLEDGE
Young Drivers aged 17-25 years.
Why are they at risk?
Facts:
1. Road crashes are one of the leading
causes of injury, disability and death
among young people.
2. Young drivers are over-represented in
road crashes compared to other age
groups.
3. Young drivers in rural areas experience a
higher rate of fatalities than those from
urban areas.
Coles has launched a new initiative that could end up with
our College getting sports equipment for free . . .
From Thursday 2 September until Sunday 31 October 2010, every
$10 spent* at Coles Supermarkets will earn customers a Coles
Sports for Schools voucher worth 1 point. For as little as 85 points
schools will be able to get some brand new sporting equipment!
Simply collect your voucher/s from your weekly shop at Coles, ask your child to drop the
voucher/s in the box at Student Reception at the College and we could get some brand new
sporting gear! We’ve got 8 weeks to collect as many Sports for Schools vouchers – and
extended family and friends and neighbours can help. Get more vouchers, we get more gear!
4. Speeding is the number one cause of road
crashes.
5. Other
high-risk
behaviours
that
significantly contribute to road crashes
and injuries include:
• Drink driving
• Driver fatigue and distraction
• Not using seat belts
Driver inexperience: Often young drivers
don’t realise that it takes time and lots of
practice to develop safe driving skills.
Developing brain: Parts of the brain
responsible for self control and for
recognising and managing hazards do not
fully mature until after the teenage years, so
young drivers are more likely to experiment
and take dangerous risks.
Overconfidence and risk taking: Young
drivers can be over confident about their
driving ability and underestimate dangers on
the road.
Having friends as passengers: Young drivers
may be distracted by passengers or may feel
pressured to take risks, such as speeding.
Every extra peer passenger carried by a
young driver increases the chance of
crashing.
Alcohol and other drugs: Young people often
do not understand that alcohol and other
drugs affect a driver’s skills, mood and most
importantly behaviour. Safe driving requires
clear judgement, concentration and ability to
react to what’s happening on the road.
THANK YOU!
Many thanks to our wonderful
musicians who provided entertainment for the St James Art Show on
Saturday night, 4 September.
These students voluntarily gave up their own time to provide this service to the St James
community. As always the standard of their talents drew many positive comments, and they
continue to be fantastic ambassadors for our College.
Special thanks to TOM MONAGHAN who set up the sound, managed the sound for each
performance, himself performed, AND packed up at the end of the night!
Other students who contributed were:
Breanna McCarthy, Ryan Anderson, Brant Hawley, Finn Davoren, Roisin Davoren, Liam Kirk, Tim
Wong, Chris Best, Matt Bourgeois, Monique Mai, Evelyn Anderson, Talylah O'Reilly and
Catalynne Scott.
Busy lifestyles: Work, sport and study often
mean busy lifestyles for young people, which
may cause them to drive when tired –
especially late at night. Driving tired
significantly impairs driving, even if the
driver doesn’t feel sleepy.
Mrs Louise McLaughlin
The RRISK program aims to increase
awareness of these risk factors and how to
improve road safety. For more information

LITERACY AND NUMERACY NEWS
YEAR 8 HSIE
Students used their numeracy and literacy
skills – to see what an “Unequal World” we
live in – for the topic of ‘Global Change’.
Students were given a list of what 80% of the
worlds’ population has access to - as part of
the developing world – such as food,
healthcare, education.
Students then had to calculate a number of
numeracy questions related to percentages of
the population. The class was then divided
into 80% which were 24 students (the
developing world) and 20% which was
6 students (the developed world).
A cake was then divided being the worlds’
resources, into 80% and 20%. The developing
world of 24 students received only 20% of the
cake to share and the 6 students in the
developed country received 80% of the cake.
Students were then asked to express their
feelings over the unfair distribution of cake,
and as you would expect, students were very
unhappy with how little they would receive
and thought it very unfair.
Students then had to write a paragraph
reflecting on their feelings on the distribution
of cake. They had to ensure that they used a
topic sentence, supporting details and a
concluding sentence. Students were then
each given a fair slice of cake.
