Hungary is a heart-stealer; it will lure you back again and again to sample its rich wines, lounge in its thermal spas, gaze at its birdlife and make one more attempt to master its hermetic language. It has all the luxury of western Europe with a Magyar twist and at half the cost. The College of Dunaújváros, reclining upon its traditions, is a truly European and international institution, admitting students even beyond the boundaries of the European Union. Our College and its programs meet the requirements of the Bologna process and the European accreditation, and therefore we provide international degrees and diplomas to our students. With our innovative approaches, research & development activities, modern educational initiatives, e-learning and practice-oriented programs, and with our responsible partners we are forming the science centre of the region. Dr. Bognár László Rector Geography Hungary is a kidney-shaped country lying in the centre of Europe; it shares borders with seven neighbours: Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. There are three basic topographies: the low-lying regions of the Great Plain in the east, centre and southeast, and the Little Plain in the northwest; the northern mountain ranges, which include Hungary’s highest peak (the 1015m/3330ft-high Kékestető); and the hilly regions of Transdanubia in the west and south-west. The biggest rivers are the Danube and the Tisza, which divide the country into thirds, and the Dráva, which forms the southwestern border with Croatia. The country has over 1000 lakes - the largest, Balaton, is strewn with thermal springs. Hungary Welcome To DF 2 DF Guide www.duf.hu/english DF Guide Dunaújváros, one of the youngest and the most dynamically developing towns in Hungary, is suited on the right bank of the river Danube, in the heart of the country, just 70 kms south from the capital, Budapest. The modern town of Dunaújváros was born as the result of a grandiose socialist investment project and has only a five decades, or two generations history to look back on. When in 1949 the decision was made that the new metallurgic complex would be built here, the perhaps-unconscious choice fell upon an area that had been inhabited for millennia. Basic Facts LOCATION: in the very centre of Europe FORM OF STATE: republic POPULATION: 10.044 million TERRITORY: 93 030 km2 CAPITAL: Budapest (2 million inhabitants) OFFICIAL LANGUAGE: Hungarian CURRENCY: Forint (Ft, HUF) MAJOR CITIES: Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, Miskolc, Győr, Eger, Sopron Balaton, Europe’s biggest lake can be found here, and the country is extremely rich in thermal baths and spas. 3 The spatial functions necessary to the functioning of the “created town” were designed and established in terms of “housing and institutional planning units”. The majority of flats are in concrete panel blocks built in the past thirty years, but in the Old City family homes and some old peasant homes from the turn of the century have also remained. The townscape of Dunaújváros is characterised by parks with lots of flowers and shady promenades. The different quarters of the town are separated from each other and from the industrial zone by stretches of green and a protective forest belt. The flora of the high river bank is of environmental value. The town also offers high-level services (restaurants, cafés, cocktail-bars, billiard-halls), as well as entertainment and cultural programmes (cinema, theatre, museums). There are no large shopping malls yet, but the first wave of the “multinationals” has already reached the town (TESCO, Food Discount Stores, McDonald’s, etc.). Dunaújváros is a town of county rank, an administrative centre, which together with the surrounding settlements has a population of nearly 100 thousand people. The town is also called “the sport town of the nation” as it has various sport facilities, as well as professional and amateur sport clubs. Dunaújváros Title XXX Hungarians are the only people in Europe who use their family name first and birth name second. So in Hungary Steven Spielberg would introduce himself as Spielberg Steven. 4 DF Guide College of Dunaújváros 5 www.duf.hu/english Brief introduction to DF The College of Dunaújváros, being the one and only higher educational institution of a dynamically developing town, lying in the geographical centre of Hungary plays a leading role in the higher education of the region. When you apply for a residence permit, you have to attach a photo (a recent one) and 7000 HUF in fee stamps. You can buy fee stamps (illetékbélyeg) at any post office. There are four basic terms you have to document. These are your student status, the residential background, financial background, and the conditions of leaving Hungary (returning home or to a third country). You should provide all the documents below when you apply for the residence permit. Important! Every document must be original or authenticated by the issuer, or a public notary! No photocopies or reproductions (e.g.: scanned and re-printed documents) are acceptable during the procedure! Certifying your student status You will need a certification from the Studies and Student Information Office of the College, which proves that you are registered and enrolled for the next academic year. Certifying residential background - If you are living at a student hostel: attach the lease contract made between you and the hostel and the address registration form filled in (as described above) signed and stamped by the director(s) of the hostel. - If you have arrangements for private accommodation: you will have to attach the documents necessary for address registration. If your place of residence didn’t change since your last registration, and the attached documents are correct and met every requirements, there is no need to re-register. Financial background According to the Immigration regulations, applicants have to prove that they possess the necessary funds to cover the expenses of their stay in Hungary for as long as they are applying for. There is a variety of ways to prove it; this can be documented partly by a written declaration, in which you explain your financial circumstances including the following details: the source(s), the amount, the currency, and the regular basis in case you receive support in cash and deposit it in the bank. In support of your statements you must attach the following documents: If you have a bank account at any Hungarian bank: you have to attach a summarized history of debits and credits on this account, at least for the previous 6 months. The last 6 statements of your account mailed monthly by the bank, or ATM receipts (of the last 6 months) are also acceptable. 16 DF Guide www.duf.hu/english If you do not have any deposit or debit on your account within the last 6 months, please document 6 months when you put and/or got some money to cover your Hungarian expenses. Advice: it is worth keeping and collecting all money-related documents, like monthly bank statements, currency exchange statements, spot cash statements, ATM receipts, and Western Union certificates, to avoid complications. The conditions of leaving Hungary (returning home or to a third country) Immigration regulations require you to certify your ability to return to your home country or any third country upon the expiration of your residence permit. You declare your destination country, the means of transport and the approximate travel expenses. Furthermore you have to certify that you possess the necessary amount of money for travel expenses throughout your stay. DF Guide Currency The official currency of Hungary is the Forint (Ft, HUF). The Hungarian name for the language is Magyar. Though Hungarian is not easy, we would like to help you with a short list of expressions that you surely will use. The Hungarian vowel phonemes can be grouped as pairs of long and short vowels, e.g. o and ó. Most of these pairs have similar pronunciation, only varying in their duration; the pairs <a>/<á> and <e>/<é> differ both in closedness and length, however. Consonant length is also distinctive in Hungarian. Primary stress is always on the first syllable of a word. The remaining syllables all receive an equal, lesser stress. All syllables are pronounced clearly and evenly, even at the end of a sentence, unlike in English.
