I looked around at what seemed a collection of empty cars. A second later the voice returned and I said, “I am hearing voices.” It was none other than our devoted deacon, Don Libera. Don, just returned from hip replacement surgery was picking up his daughter from class. He mentioned that he was allowed to return to driving when he no longer took the pain medication. He looked and sounded great but I admonished him as I do many of the folks with current surgeries, “Do must not slip, Do not fall.” It is great to have him back. He was missed. The recent snowmageddin, thirty inch snow fall, threw my bulletin letters off kilter. I am a week behind where I should be in my letter. Last week I rushed a letter on our Forty Hours Devotion. The annual parish devotion always precedes Ash Wednesday, in preparation for the beginning of Lent. And this Lent comes very very early this year. Lent is a penitential season that very much serves as a personal retreat. We evaluate ourselves on our temptations, passions, habits, and appetites for sin. We can amuse ourselves with the age old cautions that the sins of the young man are passion, the middle age man sins by ambition, and the old man falls to greed. Would that the personal problems of life were that simple. We might do better to focus on the Ten Commandments or Seven Capital Sins (Pride, Covetousness, Lust, Anger, Glutton, Envy, and Sloth). Lent is also a time to look to the devotions and sacramental duties of life. Please join us at daily Mass during the week as well as the weekends. Please join us for the Soup Supper followed Stations of the Cross each Friday Night in Lent. Please join us for the Eucharistic Adoration each Wednesday, from 9:00 AM until 8:00 PM… as well as Thursday morning, 9:00 AM, until Saturday morning at 8:00 AM. In this jubilee year for Mercy please come for an hour and ask the Lord to bless you, your family, the parish, the local community, and especially the Faithful living in the war zones. Every Ave Counts. Start saving your nickels and dimes for a Fr. Moretti Pilgrimage to Rome for the Jubilee Year on Mercy. He hopes to have a trip in the late Summer or Fall. Stay tuned. If you are looking for some interesting reading material on the internet I offer two sites to visit. First, http://www.newadvent.org/ It is an excellent website for Catholic blogs. The second is: The visions of the Passion by Sr. Anne Catherine Emerich: http://www.jesus-passion.com/DOLOROUS_PASSION_OF_OUR_LORD_JESUS_CHRIST.htm And, did I say “And?” And, please know that Confessions will be heard each night, starting at 8:00 PM. Come one come all. Big fish and small. As we are finding more and more penitents coming from neighboring parishes we need to encourage the hometown team to come early if not often. Not to worry, if you are anxious about a meeting in the Box. Ten dollars will go to anyone who can give us a sin that has not been heard before. Hmm? Just kidding… in case any folks from the chancery are reading this letter. Speaking of politics. Please remember that March 1st is the primary election day for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Everyone is encouraged to vote. Not just a few, but everyone. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to vote. Young and old. Let the Catholics and non-Catholics vote and help to reinstate a national enthusiasm for their identity in the political world. There used to be an age when folks worried about the “Catholic Vote,” a “Jewish Vote,” or “Black Vote.” It was a time when Catholics among others were invested in politics. That age died when I was in grammar school. Now, we are not even sure most folks can name the local mayor, governor, or what’s his name… the vice president of the United States. But, I digress. Please study the details on those running for office. Let no one vote blindly but use their God given wit and wisdom in discerning their vote. Just think of the little widowed Catholic grandmother, retired nurse, mother of nine, wife of a deceased veteran who stood up in her recent local Iowa caucus and said, “Have you had enough yet?” The place went absolutely wild. Let us pray for one another. Collegiate answer: Two recent apparitions of the Blessed Mother have taken place in the Islamic world, both is Egypt. They are:Our Lady of Zeitoun was a mass Marian apparition that occurred in the Zeitoun, a district of Cairo, Egypt, over a period of 2–3 years beginning on April 2, 1968, in the period after the six day war. And, The apparitions of Our Lady of Assiut were also mass apparitions in Assiut, Egypt during 2000 and 2001 and many thousands of witnesses produced photographs of them, which were reprinted in several newspapers. Collegiate Question: Who was the first Catholic Roman Emperor? Be careful. He also helped set the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Good hunting Fr. Gould www.sje1.org 4 St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Greetings! We had a terrific turn-out at the Open House both at the elementary school and pre-school! There were seventeen new families that were looking at possible enrollment at the elementary school and ten new families at the pre-school. At least at the elementary school, it is almost triple the number of families since I arrived in 2011. Many thanks to those parishioners who directed new families to our school. The parish, according to Fr. Gould, is proud of our school, and we enjoy a good reputation in the educational community. We had a ball during Catholic Schools Week, which concluded with the above mentioned Open House. I was very excited with the results of the Religion Bee on Feb 5. There was a three way tie including the Saints team, Prodigals team and Evangelists, so we went to sudden death overtime, and the Saints prevailed. I was happy that knowledge of Catholic, Bible and religious items/events was very good. The teacher beat the 8th grade class in Volleyball, two games to one, and custodian, Bill Helsel, was the MVP for the teachers! Activities such as Twin Day, School Spirit Day and St. John the Evangelist Day build positive climate and culture at the school. We are at open enrollment now (beginning February 8), and we believe the rising 2nd grade and 6th grade will fill-up quickly (capacity 30). I urge returning families to re-register their children as soon as possible. A waiting list will be employed if classes fill to capacity. Have a geat week and God bless you! Principal Fairweather We are having a “Used Book Sale” to benefit St. John School Library on May 21 & 22. This will be outside on the lawn from the church. Please put all of the books you plan to donate into small boxes and bring them to the school after 3:30pm. A school family has offered to store the books until the sales, but requests that the books be put into small boxes to maximize the storage space. Our ‘Used Book Sale” will ROCK with your help! Thank you to all of the families who joined us for our Open House. Registration is now under way for St. John Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten programs. Space is limited. Please contact the Preschool Office for registration information and to schedule a tour at 540-347-5341. Info about the Preschool can also be found on our website at www.stjohntheevangelistschool.org. 14 February 2016 Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) Please join us as we continue to discuss “Sacraments and Prayer”. All those interested in learning about the Catholic Faith are encouraged to join us each Wednesday, starting at 7:00 PM in the Art Room in St. John’s School. For more information, please call the Parish Office at 347-2922 Every year during the magnificent Easter Vigil liturgy, St. John the Evangelist and parishes throughout the world welcome adults into full communion with Christ and his Church. Through a process of discernment, prayer, education, and sharing with others on the journey, these adults prepare to become Catholics and the entire SJE parish community rejoices with them. Please pray for St. John's RCIA candidates who will come into full communion with Christ and His church this Easter Vigil.
