Dear Folks,
OK, OK. Everyone stop. Let us bow our heads in a moment of silence and solitude… the collegians are going back
to school as are the local county schools.Let us all rest in peace.Hmmm? Just kidding.God bless the collegians. It
has been a tough Summer for many of them with their Summer jobs. Now they will meet the great challenges to the
Faith as they return to school.Blessed are those who completed their high school CCD studies that they may have a
handle on the basic responses to the Evangelical, Hindu, Islamic, and pseudo-Catholic roommates. May they make a difference in all they
say and do.Of course, Dear Lord please help them to realize little humor goes a long way in the current Catholic generation that focuses on
evangelization.Yes, make a difference because they are different in their sacramental identification with Jesus Christ and all His angels and
saints.For that we can all be proud and confident in they are and who they represent.
God bless the parents in the final rush to get their lovely little ones in the CCD program.The rush is really on.Of course I have been given to
understand that many of the recent First Communicants may not be returning until it is time for their Confirmation. Such a tragedy to have the
greatest poverty of souls. I do hope they all sign up for the CCD program.
For those who leave, I will collect their names and ask the Legion of Mary to visit their homes to encourage them to come back to the program
that will help in the sacramental/spiritual formation of their future families. For the kids who go missing we will provide a website with a living
will program in cartoon form.It will have highlights on smiling children with cars, clothes, houses with swimming pools and very large TV
screens.There will also be highlights for dumpy little parents suffering in dumpy little beds surrounded by assorted bottles and tubes… with
urns on the mantle.In the third set of highlights will be euphoric children holding a plug in one hand and big bags of money in another.In the
background the melody of Harry Chapin’s, “Cat’s in the Cradle.”“I just wanted to be just like you Dad.Just wanted to be like you.”
And the ending for the 1974 Classic song, “And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me, he'd grown up just like me.My boy was just like
me.”That would be very nice.Have a nice day.Let us all pray for one another.
Allison Hagert, parish youth director, recently returned home from the Youth Retreat in New York that was sponsored by Franciscan
University in Steubenville, Ohio. Sounds like she and four kids from the parish, who attended, had a great time.God bless one and all who
went on the road trip.The Youth Program of the parish also recently sent a bunch of kids to the diocesan work camp.One or more of them
should be speaking at all the Masses in one of the coming weeks.It will be nice to hear from the kids how they met the Lord in serving the
needs of the poor.God bless them one and all.
As an added bonus in reaching out to our high school students I have asked Allison to occasionally join us in our high school CCD program.I
know she will be a terrific addition serving as a bridge for kids in the academic and social life of the parish.Speaking of bridges…. Allison
could use a couple of well bodied volunteers for the parish youth program. Come one come all but know it is a program that is not for the faint

Speaking of kids.Our school principal recently mentioned the diocese is promoting a scholarship program for Hispanic kids whose parents

Please remember a prayer for Fr. Moretti’s dear father. He is in very poor health and can use every Ave offered up in his regard. John Moretti
is one of the finest men I know and has played into the great lives of his three children. I loved the story from many years ago when he
returned from a trip abroad for the government. Upon his return he was given a note of warning that he had been located in an environment
which hosted the plague. No big deal for the world traveler but it was for the man who picked up his coat by accident at the little restaurant he
joined with his wife. He thought he had contracted the plague. Hmm? Great way to keep hold on your coat when you go out for dinner.
As a follow up to my ranting and raving at Mass last week… commenting on someone tearing down the American Flag at one of our town’s
Baptist Church schools and burning it in the parking lot. I concur with Fr. Moretti’s suggestion to offer them one of our flags.Such a callous
affront to one of our local churches affects all of us.I will provide the flag my cousin brought home from Afghanistan. Let us pray for one
another, in the parish and beyond. God bless all of you and please know I and the good fathers of the rectory are very proud of you.
Many of you have been asking for details on the upcoming Papal Mass for the National Shrine.I have been asking the chancery and have
recently been informed that they are considering making a certain number of tickets available to each parish. Please stay tuned.
Collegiate Answer: Pope Francis will offer Mass at the National Shrine on Wednesday September 23rd at 4:30PM. At that Mass the Holy
Father will canonize Blessed Juniper Serra, Franciscan priest of the California Missions.
Collegiate Question:The famous poet laureate of the South during the Civil War was a Catholic priest.What was his name? What part of
Virginia was he from? Where did he go to college? And what was his famous poem on the failed Confederacy? There was time when the
students of North Carolina were required to memorize the poem.

GREETINGS! Well, tomorrow the
teachers and staff return to the
elementary school to prepare for
the students when school starts
on August 31. Back to School
night will be on September 16 at the elementary
school for grades K-8 at 7PM. An academic
theme, which will be reinforced throughout the
year, is student writing across the curriculum. To
prepare for this Shenandoah University writing
workshop specialists will present a staff
development session for teachers in encouraging
writing skills on September 25. We will follow this
with a writing workshop for students. Our five
year “Design for Excellence” plan emphasizes
analytical skills for interpreting literature, which
will be a goal for this year, as well. On August 25,
the teachers and staff will be attending a “Kickoff” Mass at All Saints Church in Manassas to
ask for Our Lord’s guidance during the year.
Bishop Loverde will be celebrating the Mass, one
of his last before he retires in September. Have a

New Adult Discussion Group is Forming
Beginning September 13, 2015, a new weekly adult
discussion group will be meeting after the 9am
Mass each Sunday in Trinity Hall at St. John’s
School. If you love your Catholic faith and want to
share it with others, or want to learn more about
your faith and grow in your depth of
understanding, then this group is for you! We will
cover four basic subjects: scripture, doctrine,
apologetics, and spiritual growth. The group is
sponsored by the Knights but is open to anyone
interested in exploring their Catholic Faith. St.
John’s Parishioner Dr. Jim Dobbins will lead the
group in discussions that will help the participants
to be ready to fulfill the admonishment of St. Peter
in his letter where he tells us we must always be
ready to explain what we say we believe. The
group is especially beneficial for those who have
completed RCIA and now need some regular place
where they can continue their exploration of the
Catholic life. Jim Dobbins has over 20 years of
experience in leading Catholic study groups and
has the full blessing of Father Gould. Each session
will be about one hour.

Followup News
Our Parish bus trip to Ann Arbor, MI, to
witness our own Sister Mary Bernard
(formerly Caitlin Palmer) making her first
profession of vows as a Dominican Sister
of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, was a
great experience and sign of hope for all of
us and for our Church! Thanks to all of
you who prayed for us, who are offering
prayers for Sister Mary Bernard, and who
generously contributed toward
our
monetary gift to the sisters and toward
providing scholarships for young ladies
who otherwise couldn’t make the trip. We
delivered the spiritual bouquet holly cards
to Sister Mary Bernard and a very
generous donation of $2,625 to the sisters
in Sister Mary Bernard’s name from our
parish. They and those who benefitted from
the scholarships were very grateful!

Drama Club News!!!
The St. John’s TORCH Drama Club will be starting
up its annual season with the August drama
workshop on Friday, August 28th in Trinity Hall.
SPARKS (ages 11-14) at 4-6 PM; and TORCH
(ages 15-19) at 7-10 PM. Emphasis is on “getting to
know new faces, Improv acting, singing, and most
enjoyed-dancing!” Workshop fee is $5 per
participant. All youth are invited to participate and
check out the group to see what’s in store for our
new season!
Registration for the EMBERS program (ages 8-11)
is now open for our first production The Phantom
Tollbooth to be performed in November. Auditions
are being held on Wednesday, September 3rd or
Thursday, September 4th, both at 4-5 PM in Trinity
Hall. Practices begin September 8th. For more

Father Gould will lead our next discussion
in Mercy Hall on Friday, August 28, at
