Share blessings locally
There is always a lot to be
thankful for during the holiday
season. It is truly a great time
of the year as we celebrate with
friends and loved ones gathered
together, sharing family traditions along with good food and,
of course, exchanging gifts.
Now, as the chamber director, I am going to encourage
you to shop, dine and cater locally. Even more specifically,
please consider utilizing your
fellow chamber members wherever applicable for all of your
gift-giving and holiday needs.

“All told, the II MEF (Marine Expeditionary Force) is
on a very solid course and constitutes a force that is ready to
respond to any mission it is assigned,” Weidley emphasized.
The fact that Camp Lejeune
is seeing and will continue to
see a reduction in troops is not
new. Weidley estimated that the
population of Camp Lejeune
will drop from 46,000 in 2012
to roughly 39,000 by 2020.
Although peak construction
on the base has already been
reached, the general noted that
more than 200 construction
projects are still listed as current
at Marine Corps Base Camp
Lejeune and Marine Corps Air
Station New River. Traffic issues on and off base have, of
course, been a major consideration, so many of these projects
are designed to lessen traffic

Camp Lejeune has also begun to phase in a new access
control system using handheld
scanners designed to maintain
safety and security while increasing the efficiency of access
to the military base.
In order to be more environmentally friendly, Camp
Lejeune has partnered with
Duke Energy Progress to meet
its goal of using renewables to
reduce energy consumption.
Weidley emphasized the
importance of the militaryʼs
relationship with the surrounding community and stated that
the Marine Corps Base Camp
Lejeune would continue to
maintain the friendly relationship.
“I really do think we live
in the most military-friendly
community and the most military-friendly state in the union,”
Weidley said. “The support and
friendship of Camp Lejeuneʼs
surrounding areas cannot be
overstated.”

Cedar Point. Now, tests that
you may have postponed due to
time constraints or convenience
issues can be put back on your
packed calendar. And this time,

According to Everett,
Coastal Radiology is very subspecialized. Specialists are on
staff for every procedure that
the practice performs. Proce-
dures include general radiology,
mammography, neurological
radiology, musculoskeletal
radiology (bones and joints),
interventional
radiology (arte- ––––––––
rial and venous

biopsies) and spine and joint
injections.
“For instance, I primarily
specialize in breast imaging and
procedures. Our Cedar Point
practice performs digital and
3-D mammograms, and ultrasounds. In fact, Coastal Radiology was one of the first groups
in the state of North Carolina
to interpret 3-D mammography,” Everett noted. Detailed
imaging of 3-D mammography
often finds small cancers earlier
and allows for fewer patient
call-backs, which contributes
to decreased anxiety levels for
patients. And, if a biopsy is necessary, they can often process
the work within the same day
… another stress reliever.
A large part of the practice
deals with vascular issues. Interventional radiology specialists work to get to the root of
the problem before beginning
any procedures, according to
Everett.
“A lot of people just treat
the superficial veins, like spider
veins … and just inject those …

she explained. “Often problems
start with valves not working in
larger veins. If they donʼt work,
then smaller veins will just
keep popping up. So you have
to treat the root problem or you
will never get rid of the entire
problem.” Patients are initially
examined late in the afternoon,
after they have been active on
their feet all day. Procedures
are completed on
an outpatient basis
and most patients
are thrilled with
the results, Everett
stated.

equipment, doctors on staff are
available to read
and interpret tests
completed at other
technologist; Dr. Catherine J. Everett;
and Cindy Comer, mammography technologist.

“In other words, we can do
any type of ultrasound here,”
she pointed out. They are also
adding X-ray equipment in the
Cedar Point office as of Dec. 1.
And they hope to do bone density tests within the next year.

Walk the red carpet
When the folks at Stevenson
Chevrolet began to consider a
new location for their growing
Swansboro dealership, it was
clear that not just any location
in Swansboro would do.
“We wanted a facility that
exemplified both the Stevenson name and the outstanding
reputation of Chevrolet,” the
locationʼs general manager,
Paul Pittman, explained. “We
obviously needed a larger facility to serve the public better. It
was definitely time.”
Area residents have heard
the name Stevenson associated
with local dealerships since the
1940s. Today, the Stevenson
Automotive Group, established
in 1983 by John Stevenson,
consists of seven franchises
with 10 locations sprinkled
throughout eastern North Carolina.
Now, the new (and very environmentally friendly) dealership is one of the first things to
welcome visitors and residents
alike to Swansboroʼs friendly,
seaside community.
“Of course we wanted our
new dealership to meet Chevyʼs
design requirements, but more
than that we wanted to design
a facility that would work in
the image of Swansboro,” Stevenson Automotive Group Real
Estate Development Consultant
(and John Stevensonʼs daughter) Shelley Smith said.
“Being coastal, we also
wanted to work hard to preserve
our coastal resources,” she added. “Thatʼs why we made the
facility as ʻgreenʼ as possible.”
So, when it came time to
move the hun––––––––
dreds of cars
housed at the
Spotlight
dealership down ––––––––
the road to the
new facility, they were moved
to an energy efficient building
with actual wetlands created on
site.
“Our family loves this area
and we want to do everything
we can to make our carbon
footprint as small as possible,”
Smith noted.
Thus, Stevenson Chevrolet
opted to create wetlands on site,
allowing nature to control and
cleanse the storm water runoff
naturally.
The facility works to be
energy efficient by using LED
bulbs and lighting sensors that
automatically turn lights off
when office areas are not in
use. The service department
also features a large, high-speed
door for vehicle traffic. Since
it raises and lowers at a much
faster rate, it allows a lot less
air to escape the service center,
making it much more efficient.
“In the service department,
that door can open 30-40 times
a day,” Smith explained. “So,
all of these changes actually
make a big difference in our
day-to-day operations.”
Now for the fun part … the
cars and trucks!

Pittman. Sales figure percentages have almost doubled since
2011.

ment,” he added. (Yes, there
actually is a red carpet!)
The Silverado, Chevyʼs No.
1 best-selling truck, is also the
most popular vehicle sold at
Stevenson. The Malibu and
the Cruz are also very popular,
according to Pittman. New vehicles come with two years of
free basic maintenance and a
power-train lifetime warranty.
Stevensonʼs previous location will soon be up and
running again (still under the
Stevenson name) according to
Pittman. Called the Stevenson
Chevy Value Center, the dealership will feature vehicles priced
for sale at $15,000 and under.
“This is car shopping made
easy,” he noted. “The price on
the car is the price you pay. You
pick it ʻoff the shelfʼ so to speak
and buy it. The price is as low
as it can go. No need for negotiating.”
Stevenson Chevrolet is now
at 1435 W. Corbett Ave. (Highway 24) in Swansboro. Hours
of operation are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

some simple ways to connect
with your customers as we enter
2016.
Establishing and maintaining
a lasting connection with customers is a goal for businesses
big and small. Nowadays, accomplishing that goal is easier
than ever before, as businesses
can take advantage of the Internet and social media to keep in
touch with their customers and
keep those customers abreast of
sales or special offers.
But as effortless as it can
seem to maintain a connection
with customers, establishing the
initial connection that makes
customers want to bring their
business to you time and again
can be more difficult. While a
great product or service is at
the core of every successful
business, savvy business owners know the value of connecting with their customers on a
deeper level. The following are
some simple ways businesses
big and small can connect with
their customers.
• Share your history. Sharing
the history of your business is
a simple yet effective way to
establish a personal connection
with your customers, many of
whom may enjoy learning how
your business started, especially
if you overcame difficult odds
before ultimately becoming
successful. Sharing the history
of a business that has withstood
the test of time also inspires
customer confidence, as many
consumers correctly feel that a
company that has been around a
long time must be doing something right to keep its doors
open. Share your story on the
company website, whether itʼs
the first thing customers see
on your homepage or under its
own tab labeled “Our Story” or
“About Us.” A story also can be
shared via social media outlets.
• Survey the troops. Surveys
are another valuable tool you
can use to engage and connect
with customers. Surveys allow businesses to learn whatʼs
working and whatʼs not working with regard to pleasing their

personally to survey participants, customers or others who
provide feedback, be it through
a personal card or note sent via

a great way to foster a lasting
and positive relationship with
