BIOT-CDC DUN
This is a method to tie a fly using goose biots and CDE. You can imitate many of the Mayflies
fish eat and this is a less costly way of making flies. We will tie one that works well for me
when Pale Morning Duns are emerging. YES WE HAVE PMD’S LOCALLY! I think some people
are tying Light Cahill’s for this hatch. Rene’ Harrop and Shane Stalcup are the commercial tiers
who have lead the way using CDC in the United States.
Hook: TMC 101 size to match the insect. 14-20
Thread: 8/0 matching the dubbing color.
Body: Goose Biot with color to match the insect, try to fine the biots from Northern Geese.
Tail:
Artificial Tailing fibers.
Thorax: Super fine wool or poly dubbing with color matching the insect.
Wing: Mallard flank and CDC feathers.
Material needed to tie the fly.
Size and tie 4 or 6 tailing fibers on top of the hook.
Cut the excess and split the tail fibers.
Select the biot. Note the notch is to the rear of the fly.
Tie in the tip of the biot.
Wrap the biot evenly forward and secure, trim the excess material.
Tie in the Mallard flank feather fibers. Cut the excess close to the tie down.
Select the number of CDC feathers needed to float the fly. Stack with curvature up and tips
even.
Tie and secure the CDC to the hook behind the Mallard flank and trim close.
Select the proper color of dubbing.
Dub close behind and in front of the CDC wing. Make neat. Front view.
