Already chasing fame in America, the pop-punk
group are becoming more and more listened to
throughout Europe. Forming in 2001, they have
created tunes which go from brilliant beats to brutal
breakdowns in the blink of an eye. They have
obviously been influenced by the hardcore genre but
they have kept the happy go lucky characteristic of a
generic pop-punk band such as Blink 182 or the All
American Rejects. A perfect example of this is
“Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die”. Not
for the faint hearted.
Since they formed in 2001, they have released two
ear-splitting EP’s, signed with I Surrender Records
and have played on the Warped Tour which sailed
throughout the whole of the States during the
summer. The five piece band from Worcester,
Massachusetts have toured with bands such as Bring
Me the Horizon, Hellogoodbye and Mayday Parade;
soon to be adding NeverShoutNever and the
memorable Sum 41 to that list.
FYS are well known for their explosive live
performances. Each set they play includes gang
choruses, synchronized clapping and insane mosh
pits. If you happen to be caught in a mosh pit during
one of the unruly breakdowns, may God help you.
After the storm of moshers have returned to sanity,
expect the whole crowd to be on their feet jumping
in time with the pop guitars. But do not be
complacent, alike schizophrenia, the breakdowns will
soon be back again to let hell loose and rip the floor
up.
NOT TO BE MISSED.

Flaming Henry’s was
Foxes and
the venue chosen for the release night for
Kaleidophone’s new EP “Mr Palava” and it was introduced to Maidstone
with a bang! With the big wooden doors opening at 8pm the crowd
began to get restless when the clock struck 8:30 but it only added to the
anticipation and the enjoyment that was delivered by the bands and also
offered the mixed-aged audience the opportunity to have a chat with
the night’s entertainers.
Openers Aquitaine Progression performed to a mellow crowd and
offered a taste of something new, with the classic guitar, singer and bass
player combo but mixed with a bongo and dreadlocks creating a
Mumford and Sons-esque vibe of folky goodness.
Tin Robot Records had the pleasure to introduce (and show off) the
freshest of new talent in Silver Foxes. The crowd gathered around the
tiny stage and gasped at the skill portrayed by every aspect of the band.
All five members seemed to be excelling in their given instrument and
the most surprising statistic yet, “the singer is only 14!” I was told and
the youth of the band never showed.
The Kings of the night, Kaleidophone, then consumed the stage and
the atmosphere at once, soaking it up like a band that had played gigs in
stadiums, not just bars up and down the country; and with the recent
success of having being played on national radio who can blame their
smugness. Hoping to continue the success of their first EP “Fat Cats”
the strong set choice didn’t fail to impress, including the lonely acoustic
“Water Ice” which was a good move, as it provided a well needed break
for the audience after spending the previous three minutes bellowing
the brainwashing “Get off, get off, get off your/motorbike!”

Students delighted
with A Level results
Groups of eager pupils gathered in the sixth form area at Cornwallis
to find out their A Level results.
Head of Academy, David Simons said: "This year Cornwallis
Academy celebrated the fact that a quarter of all grades were A,
which signals another outstanding year of A Level exam results. 65%
of grades were A- C, with 99% being A-E. We are delighted that so
many students gained the higher grades and will now secure places
at university."

RECORD RESULTS
AT CORNWALLIS
ACADEMY
It has been another outstanding year for GCSE results at
Cornwallis Academy. Students eager to collect their results piled
into the sixth form area from 10am to open their envelopes and
discover what grades they had achieved.
This year 92% of students gained 5 or more A*- C grades which
is an increase of over 10% from last year and 55% achieved A*- C
including English and Maths. More students gained higher grades
and the points score increased significantly
Head of Academy, David Simons said: "We are delighted that so
many students were so successful and look forward to welcoming
them back into our sixth form."
The academy is particularly proud of Harry Doust in
Year 8 who achieved a B in an Ancient History
short-course, which he studied for in his
lunch breaks.

Cornwallis Academy currently has
two specialist subjects, Technology
and Science. We now have the
opportunity to refresh the
specialism and are proposing to
change from Technology to Languages.
If approved it will mean an expansion of
the range of languages available to students
and will ensure that all students take a language at
Key Stage 4. It would make Cornwallis Academy one of the only nonselective Language colleges in the South East and will allow our students
to develop a range of linguistic opportunities.

PENSIONERS ENJOY SUMMER TEA PARTY
4
On Thursday 22 July elderly residents from the local area were treated to a
summer tea party at Cornwallis Academy.
The 28 pensioners, who live in sheltered accommodation provided by Golding
Homes, enjoyed a buffet lunch, music and games and were looked after by Cornwallis
students during the course of the event.
Sarah Leipnik, from the Golding Homes Community Development Team, said: "Peter
who organises a lot of outings for the group extended his thanks to Cornwallis Academy
for organising the event and to Golding Homes who assisted and invited the group. He
thought the students were excellent and had put a lot of effort into making the afternoon
a memorable one. He can't wait for the next outing with the Cornwallis students."
The summer tea party was one of many intergenerational events between Golding
Homes and New Line Learning Academies, which incorporates Cornwallis
Academy in Linton and New Line Learning Academy in Loose. Many more events
are being planned for the forthcoming year.
Performing Art students
at Cornwallis will be
showcasing their
production of High
School Musical at The
Exchange, Maidstone
from 10 – 12 November.
Cake sale

Staff at Cornwallis Academy held a cake sale on Friday 24
September in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and its World's
Biggest Coffee Morning.
Find out how much was raised in the next edition of Ozone.
A group of students and teachers spent a month in Zambia and Botswana in
South Africa over the summer on a World Challenge expedition.
During their stay the intrepid explorers trekked across the Southern Kalahari
Desert, learnt how to build outdoor shelters while camping, experienced safari
adventures and helped build a house for a village teacher.
Teacher, Rob Wilson, who went on the trip said: “One day we organised a
mini sports day with children from a local school in Nsongwe village. The event
involved things like balloon relays and an egg and spoon race. Afterwards we
handed over gifts of polo shirts and equipment to the school. It gave us all great
pleasure to see the smiles on the children’s faces when they received their gifts
and when they played with balloons and bubbles. It brought home to us all just
how privileged and lucky we all are to have our luxuries.”
This is the sixth time Cornwallis has sent students on a World Challenge
expedition. Countries visited so far have included Kyrgyzstan, Venezuela, Brazil,
Mongolia and South Africa.
• World Challenge provides educational expeditions in the developing world
which teach life skills and expand minds outside the classroom. The bespoke
one to six week expedition itineraries foster team and leadership skills.
Jam in the Park music
festival rocks
Crowds of young people and families streamed in Brenchley
Gardens, Maidstone, on Saturday 7 August to hear bands and solo
acoustic artists ‘rock out’ at the Jam in the Park music festival.
Ten acts from Kent, hand-picked by sixth form students from
Cornwallis Academy, performed 30 minute sets from midday until
6pm to the delight of event supporters.
Those that took to the stage were: Hands Shaped Like Hearts;
The Antics; Fred Clark; Stacey and the Freeloaders; White Bone
Rattle; Dethrone Exodus; As Worlds Collide; Audio Karma; Silver
Foxes and Kaleidophone.
Communications Manager from Cornwallis Academy, Moira
Mitchell, who helped co-ordinate the festival, said: “All of the acts
were brilliant and many of them performed with real energy and
got the crowds going. Thankfully the weather held out for us too and everyone
attending seemed to really enjoy the music and the atmosphere in the park.”
Jam in the Park is a free annual Maidstone Town Centre Management initiative
organised with the help of sixth form students from Cornwallis Academy. KMFM
radio presenter Benedict Smith also lent a hand announcing acts onto the stage.
Town Centre Manager, Bill Moss, added: “This was another excellent afternoon of
free entertainment, for Maidstone. Students from Cornwallis Academy accepted the
challenge from Town Centre Management to find the best youth bands on the local
scene and delivered a lively, fun-packed concert that proved a hit with everybody
who attended. My thanks and congratulations to them for a job well done”

TECHNOLOGY TRAINING
Kayleigh Kent, a Business Studies teacher at New Line Learning
Academy, was one of only 15 teachers in the UK who took part in a
two-day summer camp at Microsoft UK Headquarters where she was
trained in the use of the company's most current educational
technology.
At the summer camp, Kayleigh learnt how to use Microsoft's free
software to create teaching and learning resources for the classroom.
She also had time to design, create and evaluate the resources,
collaborate with others and was given access to Microsoft's technology
experts.
On completion of the course, Kayleigh was awarded Microsoft
Innovative Teacher status and now joins a select group of educators as
part of the Partners in Learning Network that have opportunities to
contribute to the work Microsoft Partners in Learning are currently
undertaking in education in the UK.

award!
The Head of Chinese and Modern Foreign
Languages at New Line Learning Academy,
Annabel Parker, has been presented with an
award for excellence in Chinese teaching
and learning by the Specialist Schools and
Academies Trust (SSAT).
Annabel scooped her Subject Leadership

at the beginning of July.
The Subject Leadership Award seeks to
award those who have made a significant
contribution over a period of time in
leading Chinese teaching and learning in their school and have established
high standards of pupil performance. Those obtaining this award have
displayed outstanding management skills and are excellent at promoting the
subject in school and the local area.
Head Teacher of New Line Learning Academy, Guy Hewett, said: "It is
difficult to express just how proud I am to have Annabel as a subject leader,
even more so because in addition to all these achievements, she is a

Acne, blemishes and blackheads create big
problems for teens. Oily skin is prone to all of these so you
have to be extra careful about cleaning your face. Wash
your face twice or three times a day with an antiseptic soap
whenever possible to ensure your face is super clean. You
can use an astringent lotion to
control over oilness.
Teen girls should apply light make-up as
putting too much on can make the skin’s
pores clog up. Whatever skin type you
have, make sure you remove all your
make-up before going to bed. You can use
a cleansing milk or wipes and then
