Guide to Barbados Crop Over Festival Known fondly as the “sweetest summer festival,” Crop Over is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated events on the Barbados calendar. The festival dates back to the 1780s, when Barbados was one of the world’s famous producers of sugar, and a festival was held at the culmination of each sugar season, when the ‘crop was over’. Officially commencing with the Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes in June, the twelve week festival is packed with a long list of events and activities ensuring that there’s something for everyone, including calypso competitions, arts and crafts symposiums, street fairs, steel pan concerts on the beach, j’ouvert paint parties and more. It all culminates on the first Monday of August with Grand Kadooment, where revelers dress in colorful costumes and parade through the streets to calypso music. Held on the first Monday of August, Kadooment celebrations see the streets of Barbados overtaken by revelers who are adorned in colourful feathered and bejeweled costumes. With music trucks keeping the calypso music pumping and drink trucks keeping the rum flowing, locals and tourists alike jump, dance and ‘chip’ from the National Stadium to Spring Garden Highway, bringing a spectacular close to the sweetest summer festival.
