DESTINATION: MOLDOVA LEADING PARTNERSHIP OF DMC’S IN EASTERN EUROPE AND CENTRAL ASIA COUNTRIES GENERAL DESCRIPTION Moldova is a landlocked republic of hilly plains lying east of the Carpathian Mountains between the Prut and Dniester rivers. The country is sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine. Rich with history and fertile soils that produce abundant vineyards, Moldova is an unjustifiably forgotten tourist destination, as yet untouched by the budget airline brigade. In this land-locked eastern European country, you can wander round vast monasteries, sample the local wines, or trek through ancient forests. Despite remaining one of the poorest countries in Europe, the people are friendly and welcoming, and the main centres, such as the capital Chisinau, have everything a visitor could need. Chisinau's cathedrals, monuments and museums survived severe WWII bombings to the city, including the house where Pushkin spent his days in exile penning some of his most famous works. Capital: Chișinău LEADING PARTNERSHIP OF DMC’S IN EASTERN EUROPE AND CENTRAL ASIA COUNTRIES TRANSPORT The main means of transportation in Moldova are railroads 1,138 km and a highway system. The international air gateway of Moldova is the Chișinău International Airport. The Giurgiulești terminal on the Danube is compatible with small seagoing vessels. Shipping on the lower Prut and Nistru rivers plays only a modest role in the country's transportation system. If you are coming into Moldova via Ukraine, be aware you may be crossing Transnistria. It is an unrecognised "state" in the east of Moldova bordering Ukraine, which broke off from the country after a war in 1992. There is a small chance that foreign tourists may be asked to pay bribes, although the buses which travel between Ukraine, Transnistria and the rest of Moldova usually handle negotiations at the border well, collecting passports and negotiating with Transnistrian authorities. Recently (June 2015) travelers, whom cross in to Moldova via Transnistrian are required to obtain a entry stamp within 3 days of arrival, otherwise a "small" fine (amount unknown) can be given to the traveler. The entry stamp can be collected at the airport and possible another location in Chisinau. This is a staple polenta-like food on the Moldovan table, served as an accompaniment to stews and meat dishes or garnished with cottage cheese, sour cream, or pork rind. Regional delicacies include brânză (a brined cheese) and ghiveci (a lamb or goat stew). Traditional for the Moldovan cuisine are dishes combining diverse vegetables, such as tomatoes, bell peppers, aubergine, cabbage, beans, onions, garlic, and leek. Vegetables are used in salads and sauces, and they are baked, steamed, pickled, salted, or marinated. The various kinds of borș (ciorbă) include a wide range of soups with a characteristic sour taste. These may be meat and vegetable soups, or fish soups, all of which are soured by borș or lemon juice. Chicken soup with meat, known as zeamă, is very popular. Roasted and grilled pork, beef meatballs (known as pârjoale and chiftele), and steamed lamb are common. Moldova has a long local wines tradition. Especially the reds are popular throughout the country. Most Moldovan villagers grow their own grapes and press their own wine, and many standard rural households will press thousands of litres per year. It is known for its well-preserved stronghold. The current building displays the most elaborated characteristics of late medieval fortifications. This observation conveys the idea that the fort was built maybe by expert from Western Europe or Transylvanian people whom traveled in Western Europe and brought architectural ideas back in Moldova . The walls are not built straight but in a curved shape to resist better to projectile, so are the 4 outer towers. We can notice also round towers which allowed the defensors to shoot from better angles and thus protect the base of the walls. The entire building has a diameter of 30 meters, 4 meters for the towers. Each tower has 4 level, the first two lower ones were used for artillery. The walls are 3 meters thick and we can find signs of a previous ditch. The main entrance tower had 3 doors, amongst them a portcullis which were closed during battles, thus the space saved at the upper level allowed garrison to pray in a small chapel.
