We welcome you and ask that you please stop into our Parish office to register. The Lord told Israel to reach out to newcomers and welcome them (Leviticus 19:36) . Today’s Readings First Reading — Elijah revives the son of a widow (1 Kings 17:17-24). Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading — Paul explains God’s call to him to preach to the Gentiles (Galatians 1:11-19). Gospel — Jesus raises from the dead the son of a widow in the city of Nain (Luke 7:11-17). ============================ HOPE AND LIFE Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. PRE-SCHOOL NEWS: Unfortunately the Memorial Day parade was canceled due to the weather and the preschool didn’t get to march in the parade this year, we look forward to participating next year. The start of June meant that Miss Carmela’s two year olds were working on Father’s Day gifts and reviewing the letters X and Y. Miss Michelle’s three year olds talked about things they do at the beach and reviewed the letters F – I. Miss Joanne’s fours made instruments and played them and did a letter hunt. Miss Tina’s fours also worked on Father’s Day gifts and wrapping paper; they also made a project based on the book, “Rain.” On Thursday the preschool held its annual beach party at West Harbor Beach, to officially kick off end of year activities. It was a fun day for children, parents and staff, as we celebrated with lunch for everyone. “Because we knew you, we have been changed for good.” Let us join together to wish Fr. Stephen well in his next assignment and thank him for all he has done for our parish. Sunday, June 26th, 11:30am Mass Hospitality to follow in the Parish Center. What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution” that can be made to our Parish. If… You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift Your IRA is a traditional or Roth You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form. VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution. Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute $5,000 to her Parish in 2016. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2016 directly to the Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable distribution. This information is not intended and should not be construed as legal, tax or investment advice. For such advice, please consult an attorney, tax advisor or investment professional. Wills and Bequests have the power to impact future generations. It’s so easy to include our Parish in your Will and still provide for loved ones. You may be able to make a simple bequest by adding the following language: “I give and bequeath the sum of $ _________ (or the % of), to be used for the general program of St. Gertrude Parish, a Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.” Ensure the future vitality of our Parish with your charitable bequest or consider other Estate Planning options, such as designating our Parish as beneficiary of a life insurance policy or an IRA account.
