JESUS AND THE DEVIL
The devil tempted Jesus by
quoting scripture, as today’s Gospel
reminds us. Try a self-serving
miracle. Try selling out. Try
dazzling the audience; people are
gullible, after all. Try all these easy
ways. The tempter tries to urge
Jesus onto the slippery slope,
attempts the old soft-soap, the snake
-oil solutions that are always readily
at hand. The devil knows better, but
is powerless to do better, much less
be better. The devil is evil
personified, who senses in Jesus the
stronger, truly attractive presence of
holiness.
Evil is exposed and engaged, we
are reminded in this Sunday’s
Gospel. Evil knows the jig is up.
The undoing of lies begins with
Jesus, who takes up the work of soul
-healing and world-healing. This
Lent, the Church invites us to enter
into this renewing, re-creative work
and be made whole again.

Time goes by so fast...
For those who did not hear me speak at all the Masses last weekend, my time with you as your Pastor is
coming to an end this coming June. In addition to myself, there are several priests in our Diocese who will
be reassigned to various parishes on Long Island. I will join them in seeking a new assignment, in a
different location here on Long Island.
Over the next several weeks, the names of the parishes seeking new priests in June will be made available
to all priests in the Diocese. I will then be given an opportunity to express my preference for serving at one
or another of these open parish positions.
As some of you may be aware, the Diocese has begun a practice to consult with the people of a parish
whose pastor is being transferred. There will be a Parish Open Meeting on Thursday, February 25 at 7:00
P.M. in St. Gertrude Parish Center. The format is simple: I will welcome and thank everyone who has come
to the public meeting and then introduce the Episcopal Vicar, Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski, the Vicar for
Clergy Personnel, Msgr. Peter Pflomm, and our local priest-dean, Fr. Maffeo: who will facilitate the meeting.
The information gathered at this Meeting will focus on three areas of response:
1. What do you love about St. Gertrude Parish? What do you think is going well here?
2. What do you think needs work or attention at St. Gertrude Parish? What do you think is not going well
here?
3. Name some specific traits you would like to see in the next pastor assigned to St. Gertrude Parish.

PS: People have already asked if there is any point in writing letters or making phone calls requesting me to
stay here at St. Gertrude. The simple answer is unfortunately, No. In fact, doing so makes things even
more difficult regarding my own transition to a new parish, so I thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness
and prayer-filled restraint.

Family Life
Congratulations to all the boys and girls who celebrated the
Sacrament of Reconciliation on Thursday, January 28th.
Confirmation interviews will begin Wednesday, March 2nd
during class time.
There are no Religious Education classes the week of February 15th.
Congratulation to the Bayville Boy Scouts who received the Parvuli Dei Medals last
Sunday at the Family Mass. The boys learned about the families to which they
belong and that through God they learn to care and share about gifts given to them
by God.
PRE-SCHOOL NEWS: Love was in the air this week, as all the classes finished their
Valentine projects and had their Valentines’ parties. Miss Carmela’s twos made Valentine
plates and worked on a shapes collage. Miss Michele’s threes made heart butterflies,
people, monsters and bees. They also studied the letter H. Miss Joanne’s 4s made heart
handprints and a portrait of George Washington for President’s Day. They studied the letter N and O.
Miss Tina’s 4s finished their Valentine mailboxes and made Chinese lanterns for Chinese New Year.
They also studied the letter S. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our preschool and church families here at
St. Gertrude’s. Next week is Presidents’ Week and the preschool will be closed.

Stations of the Cross Fridays in Lent at 7:30pm at in the church. The Stations of the
Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final
journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary.

THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY:
LENT AND RECONCILIATION
“Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian
faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him.”
With these words from the very first paragraph of Pope Francis’ Bull of Indiction, Misericordiae Vultus
(MV), proclaiming the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, we see the heart of what we celebrate this
year: that God’s mercy is brought to us in Jesus Christ. The closer we come to Jesus, the Son of God, and
the more intimately we know Him, the more we will experience the unbelievable richness of the Father’s
mercy.
The Holy Father has given the Church an extraordinary gift in the Year of Mercy. The word “mercy”
reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Mercy is the ultimate and
supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy is what connects God and His children, because His
mercy opens our hearts “to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.” (MV 2) Indeed, this
Year of Mercy is a special time for the Church, “a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger
and more effective.” (MV 3)
Isn’t that a great challenge for us ― that we might become more effective witnesses of mercy? Imagine if
we could really do that! Maybe that’s a good Lenten project for each and every one of us: to become a
more effective witness of mercy!
We know that Lent prepares us for the celebration of Easter, either by preparing us for the Sacraments of
Initiation, or by preparing us to recall our own Baptism. Doing penance is central to this. However, if we
are going to truly live Lent and not just “observe” it, we must make a true response to God’s call to
renewal, and accept the spiritual challenge to cooperate with God’s grace by making a decision, a plan and
a continuous effort.
To really live this Jubilee Year in keeping with its motto “Merciful like the Father,” we must experience the
proof of God’s love for us: “He gives his entire self, always, freely, asking nothing in return. He comes to
our aid whenever we call upon him.” (MV 14)
The Sacrament of Penance is for us one of the most powerful ways (or proofs!) we have of experiencing the
mercy of God, and of renewing our baptismal dedication and dignity. Through the mercy of God, that
sacrament becomes the opportunity to restore baptismal innocence, an innocence that becomes marred by
sin.
Continuing through Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord this year, we will explore various aspects of
the Sacrament of Penance, so that we might use this time of Lent for conversion
and reconciliation in order to experience the richness of the Father’s mercy and,
come Easter, celebrate the Paschal Mystery of the Lord’s death and resurrection
with minds and hearts renewed by God’s mercy.

Lenten Day of Prayer at the Seminary – Sunday, February 28, 2016
Fr. Patrick J. Griffin, C.M., will present a Day of Prayer at the Seminary of the
Immaculate Conception, 440 West Neck Road, Huntington from 9:30 a.m. to 3
p.m. The theme will be “Mercy of God.”

Lent is a perfect time for us to pray for those in need - whether it is for their material, emotional or
spiritual needs.

Planning meetings Feb. 11, March 9 and April 13
Long Island Handicapped Encounter Christ (HEC) is in need of volunteers for its annual retreat which will be held Thursday,
April 28 through Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Camp Alvernia in Centerport, NY.
HEC is a program that provides retreat opportunities that celebrate life, nurture faith and offer support for persons 18 years and
older with special needs. HEC retreats provide an environment which persons with disabilities and able-bodied friends step away
from their usual routines and enjoy a prayerful experience of song, talks and meditations, group sharing, Eucharist and many
other joyful moments. The shared experiences of the retreat often develop into relationships of mutual support.
There are many volunteer roles to be filled. We are in need of team members, kitchen help, setting up and taking down the camp,
as well as drivers for our candidates.
Our first planning meeting will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7 pm at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Greenlawn – we
invite you to come hear what we are all about. Two follow-up meetings are planned for Wednesday, March 9 and Wednesday,
April 13.

The IRA Charitable Rollover
is back and is now
permanent!
What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution” that can be made
to our Parish.
If…
You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift
Your IRA is a traditional or Roth
You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions
You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New
York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution
(RMD).
The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified
charitable distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form.
VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive
the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution.
Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute
$5,000 to her Parish in 2016. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs
the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2016 directly to the
Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable
distribution.

Camp Fatima for boys and Camp Bernadette for girls are now accepting registrations for the 2016 summer

PROFESSIONAL THERAPY AND COUNSELING
Professional therapy, provided by New York State licensed therapists including therapists who specialize in
Bereavement, Bipolar Disorders and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, is available to our parish and 147 other
parishes. This program, under the direction of Dr. George Giuliani, has been conducted in the diocese for the past 41 years for the
convenience of parishioners. It is provided by the Catholic Counseling Center, a proprietary professional corporation, which is
