PROJECTS COMPLETED BY YOUR GIFTS (JWN Where Needed Most — Needed: Ongoing) Thank you for your gifts, which were generously given in the last fiscal year to provide support wherever the need was greatest. Your contributions made it possible for us to complete annual funding for Internet upgrades for regional centers in Africa, provide IT training in Africa, and improve Internet connectivity for translation teams. In September, JAARS learned that the translation office of our partner ATALTRAB in Chad, Africa, had been without electricity for six months---so we made a transfer of funds to provide a generator that now powers lights, computers, and other office equipment. To enable us to continue meeting needs in the coming year, please donate at www.jaars.org/JWN. 4 December 2015 You will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. —2 Corinthians 9:11 NLT SUPPORT FOR BIBLE TRANSLATION STARTS IN NORTH CAROLINA (CORE: The Core Mission Fund – Needed: $811,271) Kari traveled across the United States to spend three months living on the JAARS campus in North Carolina. She is learning how to use audio and video equipment to communicate Scripture truths to the people in Guatemala she hopes to be working with soon. Sungwook and his wife, Hyang Mee, prepared themselves for a challenging assignment in Papua New Guinea by taking the Intercultural Communications Course, offered three times a year at JAARS. They were pleased to have the opportunity to connect with seasoned missionaries over lunch in the dining hall. Mindy was apprehensive about getting behind the wheel of a 4WD vehicle on a rutted, obstacle-filled course, but she was grateful to have expert trainers teach her auto maintenance and safe operations. She knew she would need these skills to navigate difficult trails in Papua New Guinea. People who have dedicated their lives to Scripture translation come to the JAARS campus each year to receive training that will help them succeed in their assignments. They also find facilities and a community ready to lend encouragement beyond the curriculum. Affordable housing, childcare, counseling and medical services, as well as spiritual enrichment, communal meals, and relationship building add incalculable value to their preparation for the work for which God has called them. Your support for the Core Mission Fund makes it possible for translators and other field workers to expand their skills and strengthen their spirits while they make JAARS their temporary home. In addition, the Core Mission Fund provides the means to conduct research, develop ways to facilitate translation work, provide technical assistance, and many other operations that make Scripture communication easier, faster, and more effective. You can learn more and join this partnership by going to jaars.org/CORE. The excellent childcare provided by JAARS staff made it possible for Solomon and Alison Ngallaba to give their full attention to their studies in the Intercultural Communications Course. JAARS AVIATION TRAINING WINS GRANT (A200 Pre-Field Aviation Orientation — Needed: $149,541) (W201 Pacific Islands Transport Boats — Need: $457,642) Aviation training is fundamental to JAARS’ role in the world of mission aviation, and 2016 is shaping up to be one of our busiest years in recent memory. Our facilities, aircraft, equipment, runways, and experienced staff are all committed to instilling values of service and safety in the pilots, mechanics and aviation managers who come here to prepare for assignments in some of the most remote and inaccessible places in the world. As a fifth-place finisher in the Lightspeed Aviation Foundation Pilots Choice Award competition, JAARS received a $2,000 grant which will be used toward the expense of maintaining our high level of training. Thank you for your votes. To add your support for our next Pre-Field Orientation class, go to jaars.org/A200. GOD'S WORD IS ONLINE IN MEXICO (4913 Websites in Heart Languages — Needed: $33,785) A recent Web workshop brought 13 people, representing nine indigenous language groups, to Oaxaca, Mexico. They came to learn how to create and publish websites that could share Scripture, songs, photos, videos, and other forms of God’s Word in the languages they understand best. This is particularly valuable in areas where there is opposition to God’s Word and to those who share it. Where Bibles may not be carried openly, believers can view websites in the privacy of their homes or log on with cellphones, sharing links with friends. Pastors post sermon videos, and users can download study guides, listen to worship music, or share prayer requests and praise reports. Your contributions to this project have made it possible for trainers and equipment to travel the globe, helping local website managers build and launch sites that encourage believers growing in their faith. To support this ongoing work, go to jaars.org/4913. THE "LITTLE BOAT THAT COULD" IS HEADING TO THE WATER Bob Haussler, director for maritime services, reports that the salvaged boat destined for service in the Pacific Islands is on target for its first seagoing trials this month. “We’ve now finished painting the hull,” he says, “and the handcrafted aluminum panels to display instrumentation are completed.” The next major task will be the wiring and the completion of deck passenger seating. The 31-foot vessel, purchased at auction from a fire department in Florida, is being refitted for use in transporting people, supplies, and equipment in northeastern Papua New Guinea. Translation teams working among 45 language groups eagerly await this transport to help them travel more swiftly and safely among the many small islands dotting the ocean around PNG. This boat will serve as a working prototype, helping us learn to balance speed, stability, and capacity on the open water. Help us put this boat to work by donating at jaars.org/W201. 4WD MAKES TRANSLATION WORK POSSIBLE (L102 BTA Vehicle for PNG — Needed: $39,672) Our partner in Papua New Guinea (PNG), the Bible Translation Association (BTA), needs our help. No vehicle is available in Alotau, in southeastern PNG, to transport an administration team that serves more than 15 language programs in Milne Bay and Oro provinces. They need a strong 4WD vehicle capable of negotiating rugged terrain. With it, BTA office staff will be able to visit translators, literacy trainers, and Scripture use workers to help with the progress of Bible translation work. Tough, reliable transportation will also enable them to call on a wider group of churches to mobilize congregational support for the work of Bible translation in PNG. Help us to help BTA speed Scripture translation in southeastern PNG by donating at jaars.org/L102. Samuel is building a website for his mountain community, Zapoteco de Amatlán. Only 5% of his people are Christian, but Samuel has already seen God’s Word affecting this group of formerly aggressive warriors. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINING CONTINUES IN AFRICA (5640 IT Training in Africa — Needed: $25,690) “IT professional people must, must, keep on grooming their skills in order to remain relevant in serving,” says Bill Mayes. Bill leads a team who travel to Africa each year to provide ongoing technical training called IT Connect. It is designed to help IT support personnel in regional centers increase their abilities in network administration, data security, troubleshooting, and other issues so they, in turn, can aid translation teams. To continue this important training in 2016, please donate at jaars.org/5640. “This year I was especially encouraged with everything we learned about IT security and network security,” said Thaliane Zaou-Goma, a fifth-time attendee from Congo. “I am grateful to God for you and all you do for us.” 2 It's roads like this that make a 4WD vehicle, such as this one, so vital for translation support teams who must travel to widely scattered villages. “Since 2013, God has blessed JAARS with the capacity to provide transportation, technology and media solutions for 556 language communities in 29 countries, serve 52 partner organizations, and train 817 people.” —Woody McLendon, President, JAARS Inc. 3
