By your baptism you were made one with us in the body of Christ, the church. Today we rejoice in your pilgrimage of faith which has brought you to this time and place. We celebrate
your presence in this household of faith. (Book of Worship, Confirmation: Affirmation of Baptism, “Address”).
Confirmation Sunday is quickly approaching and I realized I have not lifted up anything about this year’s
wonderful, talented and intelligent group at all in the newsletter. This year’s class is made up of three excellent
young men, Nick Harvey, Luke Truesdale, and Luke Wilson. They have been joined by adult mentors during the
past couple of months, Nick’s mentor is Ann Serpe, Luke T’s mentor is Tom Stepp and Luke H’s mentor is Tony
Serpe. This year’s class has met during the academic calendar year and learned a great deal about the life, death
and resurrection of Jesus Christ, about the early church, about the stories of the Bible, about Church history,
helped out leading worship, discussed their own spiritual gifts and much more.
All of this class work, video watching, discussion and meeting time is part of preparing them for affirming
their baptism and joining our church on May 22. In our tradition we believe that all of us are incorporated into
the universal church, the Body of Christ, through the sacrament of baptism. However, when an infant or very
young child is baptized, the promises and vows are made by one or more parents and/or sponsors. As members
of the church, we too, enter into a relationship where we promise to create a supportive Christian community in
which a child may grow in their faith and understanding of God. Confirmation is an opportunity for those who
were baptized in infancy, or for those young persons who have not been baptized yet, to give their own public
answer to the baptismal promises and vows. Once they have taken these baptismal vows onto themselves—
“confirming” what their parents did for them a few years back, they then join the church as full adult members of
the congregation.
The process of confirmation is one of my favorite parts of ministry. It is always a challenge to attempt to
make all of this “faith stuff” relevant to a group of young teenagers. Church can be a dreadfully boring place for
any teen. But it is wonderful to be met with curiosity, questions and that honest mixture of fear, faith, doubt, humor, skepticism, and bravado that teenagers naturally seem to master at that age. We are very fortunate to have
these three young men seeking confirmation in the church. Each one is very intelligent and active in school and
outside of school. We are also a very gifted congregation to have the three adults that the Confirmands selected
to be their mentors. I end with a prayer from the Book of Worship: “We give you thanks, O God, that they have
been moved to affirm their baptism. Help them to live not for themselves but for Christ and those whom Christ
loves. Keep them steady and abounding in hope, never giving up, pressing toward the goal of life with you in
Jesus Christ. Amen”

Strengthen the Church: Invest in the Vision
All-Church Offering. May 15, 2016
Strengthen The Church (STC) is a special mission offering to
re-imagine and build the future of the United Church of Christ. Fiftypercent of our gifts to Strengthen the Church are kept in the Wisconsin Conference and used in a variety of programming around the state.
Our congregation has benefited from this offering through our participation in the “Turnaround Church” program and the scholarship help
we received to continue in a coaching relationship with church consultant, Paul Nickerson this past year. The remainder is passed along
to the national levels of the UCC where Strengthen the Church funds
largely supports youth ministries and full-time leaders for new
churches in parts of the country where the UCC voice has not been
heard.
As God calls our congregations to be the "church" in new
ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in
existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young
adults. STC funds will also be used to award grants to help congregations communicate the "God is still speaking," message. Since 2004,
the “Stillspeaking” campaign has worked with thousands of UCC
churches and individuals across the country to extend the extravagant
welcome to all— because no matter who you are, or where you are on
life’s journey, you’re welcome here. The vision of Strengthen the
Church is to help grow churches of extravagant welcome seeking to
transform the lives of faithful people. We will receive the STC offering on Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 2016. Please give as you are able!
Convenient Shopping and Gift Cards
Next Order Due May 15!
Our next order is due on Sunday, May 15th. Spring has finally arrived. Time to think about some of the
outside projects you plan on doing. Maybe a garden, planting flowers, painting, going fishing and anything that
you need or want to do. You can get scrip cards to purchase them. There are cards for Home Depot, Menards,
Cabala's, Dick's Sporting Goods, Dunham's Sports, Gander Mountain, ACE Hardware, Lowe's, Sears, Sam's
Club, and many more. There is a list of retailers that you can get cards for, in the family room. Don't forget grocery stores, gas stations, fast food restaurants, pharmacies, motels, clothing stores, and many more.
Orders are due by May 15th, please turn them into Donna Riese, along with a check
made out to Women's' Fellowship. If anyone would like to order cards on line, you can
sign up ahead of time. Just call Patti Phillips at 1-262-470-3560 and she will help you.
Beloit Snappers Tickets:
Take Yourself Out to the Ballpark!
Fundraiser for the Church
Stewardship and Missions will be working again with The Beloit Snappers
on this fun fund raiser! The Snappers have a program in which we sell tickets for
their games at a cost of $6.50. For every ticket sold, our Church will keep
50%. Last year we were able to sell 100 tickets, so our Church raised $325! What
makes this such a great value is that these general admission tickets sell for $7.50 at the gate. So, you save a
dollar and the church still makes a few bucks! What you will receive is a voucher, good for ANY home
game during the season. There is no need to commit to a specific game upon purchase.
My family and I have been going to games for 4 years now, and it is great fun! There are promotions
such as bobble heads, discount food and drinks, various give-aways, and games played almost every half inning.. Every Friday this season, one person in attendance wins a 40” flat screen TV. If you arrive early,
there is a really good chance that you could be chosen for an “on field” promotion to win a prize! My boys
are usually lucky enough to get a game ball too. Players have even given Thorin and Thayden bats after the
games!
This year we’re going to set aside a couple of dates and encourage folks to come together as a church
group. The first is coming on Friday, June 17th. It’s a “Flat-Screen Friday” promotion night with a 7:00
pm game time. Look for a sign-up sheet on the clip board passed during Sunday morning worship. The second date is Sunday, August 14th. It’s a 2:00 pm game and will be special for us because Thorin and Thayden have been selected to throw out the first pitch! This game also has $2 Leinenkugals, Matt Chapman
bobble-head, and 12-year-old and younger can run the bases after the game. But remember these vouchers
can be used for any home game, so if you can’t make these games, you’ve still got the rest of the summer!

Christian Education News
The weather cooperated on Easter Sunday and we were able to hide the eggs outside for the Sunday
School children. A good time was had by all.
We are checking on Vacation Bible School for this summer. Not sure which way we are going to go
at this time. Jamie Stepp is looking into it further. Confirmation classes are going good. Confirmation Sunday will be May 22nd.
Discussed the end of the year for Sunday School. Set Sunday, May 22nd for our last day. Donna will
talk to Pastor Scott about the students participating in church services that day, at least singing. Discussed
what we would do on the last day and it was decided that we will have a Sundae Sunday during fellowship to
celebrate the end of the Sunday school year.
If anyone would like to help out teaching Sunday School for next fall, please let Pastor Scott or one
of our committee members know, Jamie Stepp, Lori Reynolds, Jennifer Stoltz, Merry Kay Opitz, or Donna
Riese.
Christian Education will not meet in May as our normal date of the second Sunday of the month,, is
Mother's Day. Our next meeting will be June 12th.
May 4th: Salad Luncheon
Salad Luncheon --- Wednesday, May 4th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. May 4th is coming up to
fast. If you haven't got any tickets to sell yet there is still time, there are some in the office or call Donna
Riese and she can get you some..
By now all of you should have been called or received a note asking you to make 2 salads for 8/10
people or one large salad. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of the following members: Jean Lile, Merry Kay Opitz, Jennifer Neis, Joyce Myers, Diane Riese, Ardelle Baur, or Donna Riese.
Check the sign-up sheet on the clip board if you have not yet done so. We still need help working,
baking cookies/bars, and/or cooking turkey. If you are cooking a turkey, please cut it up in small pieces for
our turkey salad. The work schedule is following:

you come to work or by 9:30 a.m.
---Wednesday, May 4th workers can come at 9:45 a.m.
Wear your blue church shirt if you have one, as this helps our customers identify the workers if they
need something.
MANY HANDS MAKE IT EASIER FOR ALL OF US. Come and help any amount of time if you
can, early or later. We need servers, kitchen help, and clean up. .
Profits from the salad luncheon go towards the 2 high school scholarships we will be giving out.

Women's Fellowship News
Women's Fellowship met and worked on the final plans for Salad Luncheon. Look for a separate article on the Salad Luncheon in this Link.
Went through closets and sorted things out for things that can be discarded.
Discussed having or not having yard and bake sale for this year. It was decided that we should put an
article in the Link, asking for input from the church members on this matter. We are all getting older and
more help is needed to have a successful yard sale and bake sale.
We will be having some of the Terry Lynn fundraising nuts available for sale at the Salad Luncheon
and after. We are purchasing --- Cashews, Mixed Nuts, Plain Almonds, and Healthy Medley. The price
will be $12.00 a bag or 2 for $20.00, except for the plain Almonds, which are $11.00 for a bag or 2 for
$20.00
Our next Meeting will be --- May 19th at 9:30 a.m.
Book Club: The Light Between Oceans
SCARS
In M.L. Stedman’s novel, The Light Between Oceans, we encounter three main characters, Tom, Isabel, and Hannah, all of
whom are emotionally scarred in a significant way. This scarring
unleashes psychic forces which produce further injuries. This triangle can’t help but cause injury to themselves; these self-imposed injuries then cause peripheral damage to the other individuals in the
triangle. All three are further scarred by isolation, both physical and
psychic.
Tom and Isabel are married and live on Janus Rock. It is one
hundred miles off the southwest tip of Australia. Tom is the lighthouse keeper, Isabel his wife. Janus Rock lighthouse sits where the
“Southern Ocean” meets the Indian Ocean (a crossroads of sorts).
The physical isolation of Janus reflects Tom’s inner isolation. He
retains vivid memories of the horrors he witnessed in WWI. The
damage he suffered is internal and causes him to have an abiding
sense that he should never inflict damage upon others in the future.
Isabel’s pain becomes a test of that resolve.
Stedman has the first years of Tom and Isabel’s life on Janus
rock be something of an idyll. That idyllic existence is marred,
however, by the difficulty which Isabel has in having children. She has two miscarriages, and then, in 1926
her third pregnancy results in the infant being stillborn. Desperately upset, Isabel seizes upon an
“opportunity” which presents itself to the couple just weeks after her latest miscarriage. A rowboat washes
up on Janus Rock; in it is a man who is deceased and an infant, alive, well and about a month old. Suddenly,
Isabel sees that her need for being a mother has been miraculously fulfilled. Fate has delivered her a gift.
For Tom, the arrival of the infant tears at the core of his moral being. He is duty bound to report the rowboat incident. Instead, reacting to Isabel’s deep-seated need, he buries the deceased man and goes along with
the deceit that the child is truly Isabel’s. Since they are so isolated, no one knows that she has miscarried
again. When their supply boat comes (about every three months) they inform the boatmen that Isabel is now
a happy, contented mother with a beautiful baby girl whom they have named Lucy.
In the small town of Partageuse, which services Janus Rock lighthouse lives Hannah Roennfeldt. On
Anzac day in 1926, her husband Frank, an Austrian, is hounded out of town by a mob of men still angry at
the loss of their friends during WWI. Frank is the only “German” on whom they can vent this bitterness.
He flees in a rowboat with his infant daughter. You can guess the rest. Also, you see that the collective
scars of war have infected an entire village, and by extension, an entire country. The damage rolls outward
like waves.
Hannah’s distress leads her to become more and more isolated from her family and the town. She is regarded
as a madwoman who cannot get over the fact of the loss of her husband and child (whom she had named Grace).
Unbeknownst to her, Grace (now Lucy) lives on Janus Rock, and has even been to Partageuse when Tom and Isabel return for their relief time. For the town, Hannah’s existence is a constant reminder of the injustice done in
1926. Thus, they find it easier to dismiss her in a sense as almost insane because it assuages this guilt in a way.
When the truth of Grace/Lucy’s survival and life with Tom and Isabel is revealed, all of the bound up psychic guilt and energy is unleashed. Tom initiates the revelation by anonymously contacting Hannah. His identity
is found out; the lie is exposed. Individually, each of the principals must deal with the consequences, but so
must the village. None of the “players” in this drama can remain isolated any longer. Janus Light shines either
benevolently or accusingly down upon all of them without mercy, but with the potential for forgiveness.
Book club did not meet in April, and thus we will meet on Thursday, May 5, at 6:30 in our home (Neis). We
will be talking about both Northern Borders and The Light Between Oceans.

News from Stewardship and Missions
Each spring we participate in a gift campaign through a special collection - One Great Hour of Sharing. Our gift to OGHS enables the church to help neighbors-in-need all around the world by providing relief to
those affected by natural disasters, providing food for those who are hungry, and empowering the poor and oppressed. This year we collected $355 for world wide relief.
An important date to save in 2016 is Saturday, July 16th - this is the date of the 4th annual Family Fun
Fest. The only way to make this event a smashing success is to put this date on your calendar and to invite your
families, friends, and neighbors! Money raised at Fun Fest will be donated to four great local businesses and
charities: Elkhorn Food Pantry, Hope Now, Lakeland Animal Shelter, and the Special Olympics.
From 11:00AM - 2:00PM the event will include a dunk tank, inflatable's, games, food, raffles, and silent
auction items. We will once again ask the congregation to bring in kids items that will be organized into raffle
baskets. Some examples are sports balls, outdoor toys, indoor toys, board games, books - just to name a few. We
will also look for anyone willing to volunteer to help with the fun-filled day.

Not to Yard Sale
YARD AND BAKE SALE --- Friday, August 5th and Saturday, August 6th
This is a huge money maker for the church, approximately $1500.00, $200.00 or more.
Some decisions have to be made regarding the yard and bake sale. The workers that have been working it
are getting older and can't work like they used to and we have lost some good workers. Myself, Donna Riese,
can't do what I used to. It is time for some younger members to help on Friday and Saturday also. Maybe it is
time to rethink it. We need some younger volunteers to help. Maybe you can take a day off of work on Friday or
Saturday to help. We need help from both men and women. We need help with putting up and taking down of the
tents and help covering things up on Friday night. It goes rather quickly if we have enough helpers.
If you can help with sorting and pricing the items that are brought in the two months before the sale, let
me know, what days or night you can help out.
Please give me some input as to the above by Sunday, May 15th , so we know whether or not to plan on
having a yard sale.
IF WE HAVE TO CANCEL THIS, IT MEANS WE ALL HAVE TO DIG DEEPER IN OUR POCKETS TO
MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE.

We received $3.317.00 giving us a match of $3,317.00 from the trust fund making a total of

Church Council Meeting Minutes
April 19, 2016
Council members first met in the sanctuary at 7:00. Present were Ann Serpe, Jennifer Neis, Marie Waters, Ross
Phillips, Carolyn Morris, Jean Lile, Tom Stepp, Pastor Scott and Dorothy Bever
Pastor Scott gave an introduction to “Shift Initiative, Part 2, from Maintenance to Mission” that focuses on
who we are as a church, the strengths we have and what we can do to expand on that. The topic was “Change
could lead to unexpected blessings”. Thoughts and faith experiences were shared. More information can be found

The actual Council meeting was called to order at 7:52 p.m. in the meeting room by Chairperson Ross Phillips.
Opening prayer was led by Pastor Scott.
ADDITIONS TO THE AGENDA: None at this time.
MINUTES: Tom Stepp moved to accept the minutes from the March 15th, 2016 Council meeting as presented,
seconded by Jennifer Neis. The motion to approve carried unanimously.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Council had a chance to review the Treasurers report through the month of March.
Ann expressed a sincere thank you to Patti Phillips for getting out the reports in a timely fashion. Pastor Scott
stated that the budget has been lowered due to Cindy Waller, secretary, working 15 hours instead of the previous
20 hours, along with the addition of Lutheran Social Services rental income. However, due to the knee injury of
the instructor, the income from yoga classes has been discontinued indefinitely. With this, Ann moved to accept
the Treasurers report as written, seconded by Marie Waters and the motion to approve carried unanimously.
Approval of Committee Minutes: Diaconate, Board of Trustees, and Stewardship and Missions, Women’s Fellowship, Trust Fund and Christian Ed submitted minutes. Discussed was the discrepancy in the amount brought
in by the Brat Hut Fund raiser, $339.38 vs $259.57. Jean Lile will look into the difference. With slight discussion, Carolyn Morris moved to approve the submitted minutes with the condition to provide the correct amount
raised from the Brat Hut. Seconded by Jean Lile and the motion carried unanimously.
PASTOR’S MOMENT: Pastor Scott stated that he has submitted his Lilly Clergy Renewal grant for approval
and extended a sincere thank you to all that helped with the process. Scott is hoping to hear back by the end of
July of his acceptance. He is grateful for the time he enjoyed in Florida and is looking forward to traveling to
Connecticut the end of May.
OLD BUSINESS:
Copyright for music: Denise has recommended the church apply for an annual copyright license for the use of
music throughout the year. With slight discussion, Ann Serpe moved to contact Onelicense.net for a one year
copyright license at a cost of $200.00. Carolyn Morris seconded the motion. Following discussion that the funds
will come out of office expenses, the motion carried unanimously.
Vitality team activities: Tom Stepp had a conference call with other churches to share their “Vitality” experiences. A meeting has been set for May 12. It was agreed to continue the family fun night but will combine it
with the Vacation Bible School activities.
Other: Ann stated that the Strategic Vision Committee will meet May 3rd and 7:00 p.m.
NEW BUSINESS:
Wisconsin Conference June 11: Pastor Scott said the SE Conference Association meeting will be Saturday,
April 23rd. The theme will be about the “Shift Initiative” series. The Wisconsin Conference will be held in Green
Lake the weekend of June 11th.
Other: Tom Stepp stated that the Trustees replaced ballasts in the meeting room. Trustees also met with an
electrician to see if the church would qualify for a program through We Energies to replace the older light fixtures throughout the church. Tom also wanted Council to consider the remodeling of the Pastor’s office, similar
to what was done with the church office. With an approximate cost of $3,000 to $4,000, Council discussed some
options to raise funds. In addition, Tom wanted to bring up “Andy’s Breakfast Club” for discussion. It was
agreed that more information is needed.
NEXT MEETING: May 17th, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. (Please remember to get reports in on time and send a rep
from your committee.)
With nothing further, Ann Serpe moved to adjourn, seconded by Tom Stepp. The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned at 8:50p.m.

Annual Meeting: June 11
Join congregations from around the state at the 2016 Annual
Meeting, as we explore together how to shift from a maintenance mindset to a mission mindset.
Keynoter Rev. Cameron Trimble of the Center for Progressive Renewal will bring us insights into
trend-lines and how they impact the present and future of our congregations. She will also share uplifting examples of congregations around the country that are shifting their ministry focus, and inspire us to think creatively about our own ministries.
This year's annual meeting will build on work being done by congregations throughout the Conference
seeking new approaches to mission and ministry. Through small group sessions on Saturday morning (June
11) we'll deepen our connections and learn about resources available to support our efforts to move in new directions. Saturday afternoon workshops will explore five areas of ministry that we believe will be the focal
point for most congregational SHIFT efforts. Attendees will gain valuable information to use in our congregation.
Our church is planning to bring a team to Annual Meeting, to hear more about the SHIFT project and
to work on our own SHIFT ideas and learn about what other congregations are doing. If you are interested you
can register for the entire weekend for the greatest value, or for Saturday only.
The Conference Annual Meeting is a great opportunity to gather with friends from around the state in
worship and song, in camaraderie and fun, and to be the church. Participate in the social gathering on Friday
evening, view the exhibits - including "Bookstore Bob"! - and enjoy the beautiful setting.
Right now we have three people who are planning to attend the Saturday session from our Congregation, but we’d like to get at least another three folks to attend as well. Please talk to Pastor Scott if you are interested and available for the day on Saturday, June 11th. Thanks!!
