2014 Winter Heartline
WINTER 2014 Voices of Art According to Edgar Degas (artist), “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” If you look with your heart at the art work created by our residents, you will hear their voices. Most of our residents are unable to communicate in the traditional way, but they say volumes through their creative endeavors. They are able to express who they are creatively – and their personalities shine! Creative Arts Director, Gaye Dimmick and Speech Pathologist, Debbie Will work together to help our residents find their voice through art – each one has a different story to tell. Using colors, shapes, patterns, and textures – they let you know who they are and what puts a smile on their face. At Holy Angels we celebrate Mercy Moments – when one gets a glimpse of heaven in an interaction with another person or through an activity. If you look and are open to the spirit – there are Mercy Moments all around you – especially in our creative arts program. Bert is all smiles as he paints his blue sky. God’s creation is perfect – and there is no better place to experience creation than Camp Hope along the nature trail so beautifully carved out by our friends at Duke Energy. We have learned that the color blue is our resident Bert’s favorite color. Bert, who is a shy guy, does not always get excited with art – but given a paint brush and blue paint, he enthusiastically painted a most beautiful sky for his campfire piece – enhanced with leaves and unique pieces found along the trail. Jenny is a girl who likes loud sounds and art is not usually “loud”. But, add a hair dryer blowing brightly colored bubble paint and you have a very innovative way to paint that was a lot of fun and brought a lot of smiles from Jenny. When it is time to cut out shapes for a collage – if you bring out the electric scissors – her face lights up. For over seven years, Jeaniene Dibble of Art by J Studio in Belmont has volunteered with many of our community group home residents. Named the Holy Angels Art Club, they meet monthly with Ms. Dibble along with her art students who assist and support the residents. Each month they explore many forms of creative expression as they produce some beautiful and unique pieces of art. Jeaniene Dibble helps budding artist, Katie, with her choice of colors. At Holy Angels, art is more than a painting or quilt or collage; it is a way for our residents to truly experience the world around them and tell us a bit about it. And if you really look, you will surely notice their art work has become the voice of their heart. 21846_HolyAngels_Newsletter.indd 1 2/24/14 11:27 AM Giving Thanks….A Thousand Times Over! The Italian Mamas, Mimma, Franca & Lele prepare their notes for the Grazie Mille Gala. Franca has captivated the attention of her culinary experience participants at the Art Institute of Charlotte. Holy Angels continues to be blessed by the generous support of the guests of our Grazie Mille Gala. For the fourth year we were deeply honored to welcome back the Italian Mammas, Mimma and Franca, from the Tutti-a-Tavola Cooking Experience in Chianti, Tuscany. Holy Angels also welcomed their cousin, Lele, who made her first trip to Holy Angels and witnessed firsthand the miracles that happen every day with our residents whom we are privileged to serve. As she so eloquently encouraged people to give to Holy Angels, Lele shared, “I am leaving Holy Angels much richer for the experience, and I hope you will leave this evening much poorer!” Through the generosity of our table sponsors, silent and live auction participants and pledges made by our guests, we joyfully announce we raised more than $153,000! Under the leadership of our Gala Chair, Luke Manlove, The Grand Hall in Mt. Holly was elegantly transformed into an authentic Tuscan-inspired evening. Guests were greeted by our Honorary Chairs, Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Hannon and the Grazie Mille Committee. The heartfelt words of Marcy and Scott Lincicome as they expressed their gratitude for all Holy Angels has provided their daughter and our new Spotlight Angel, Campbell, was truly an inspiring story for all to hear. Larry Sprinkle ended the evening with an exuberant live auction. It was an evening few will forget! A smaller, more intimate gathering was hosted again by The Art Institute of Charlotte. Chef Maria Marquez and Ron Miller paid close attention to every detail as partakers enjoyed an interactive and entertaining hour in the kitchen with the Mammas gleaning knowledge on how to prepare the Mammas dishes. Everyone gathered around the table “family style” afterwards to share in the love of food, family, fellowship and Holy Angels. Gala Committee members along with Larry Sprinkle and the Italian Mamas are all smiles following a successful Grazie Mille evening. “A Thousand Thanks” to our sponsors and contributors for our Grazie Mille Weekend: CaroMont Health UTC Aerospace Systems Wells Fargo WIX Filters Mullen Holland & Cooper, P.A. One needs to look no further than the campus of Holy Angels at Christmas to realize how blessed we are by our generous supporters. Beginning in November, “Santa’s Elves” enthusiastically assist with transforming the grounds to an angelic winter wonderland complete with countless Christmas trees and angels illuminating the evenings. Our dedicated Santa, who begins growing his beard in May, eagerly delivers each resident their gifts which were specifically purchased for them by numerous donors. The staff and employees enjoy a Christmas meal thoughtfully donated by parents in appreciation for the care their son received while a resident at Holy Angels. Christmas is all about giving and the residents and staff of Holy Angels benefit from the charitable giving of individuals, corporations and churches. Many thanks to all who gave of their time, talents and resources to help ensure our residents had the best Christmas ever! Holy Angels is dedicated to also ensuring the happiness and well-being of those staff we are proud to call our own. For these efforts, Holy Angels was honored recently as one of the best places to work in our region. Members of Holy Angels staff were on hand to celebrate our Best Place To Work recognition. Charlotte Business Journal named Holy Angels – specifically noted in the medium business category – as one of the 25 Best Places to Work in the Charlotte Region for 2013. Businesses receiving this honor have found innovative ways to keep their employees happy and engaged were honored and Holy Angels is proud to be among this listing. The work accomplished at Holy Angels is often physically and emotionally demanding. However we always include fun in the daily schedule. There are regular social activities with staff and residents including monthly employee luncheons, Spirit Week, a Haunted Greenhouse, summer concerts, a Winter Wonderland each Christmas season and boat rides at Holy Angels Camp Hope. It is vital to support healthy living among staff members as well. Through the “Life is good. . . Live it well!” wellness program, all staff are encouraged to lead healthier lifestyles –free memberships to the YMCA and participation in on-site wellness educational programs are included: Stress Management, Nutrition Basics and Leading an Active Lifestyle – Move More. Regina Moody, Holy Angels President/CEO,said, “we work very hard to keep communication open between administration and our staff. . . through our intranet, emails and face to face meetings, especially during our monthly Employee Meal Days. We also offer our employees the opportunity to participate in a web based training program – the “College of Direct Support” in order to enhance their knowledge in the field of intellectual developmental disabilities. This certificate is nationally recognized. Without our staff, Holy Angels would be unable to provide quality program and services for our residents.” For the staff of Holy Angels, employment is more than a job. Said one Holy Angels staff member, “At Holy Angels we’re family – we love each other and take care of each other – Holy Angels is our home away from home.” A fellow staff member agreed, “We provide unconditional love in a fun and loving environment, where team work is important in providing quality care. Each resident is treated with dignity as we help them to be as independent as possible.” More than 300 businesses were nominated for this prestigious award. 21846_HolyAngels_Newsletter.indd 6 2/24/14 11:27 AM Cherubs Café & Cherubs Candy Bouquet Celebrate “Giving Tuesday” Cherubs Café, Cherubs Candy Bouquet and Holy Angels offered a unique opportunity for customers and supporters. Giving Tuesday – hosted on December 3rd in 2013 – is a national event to inspire personal philanthropy and charitable giving during the holiday season. It is often considered an opening day to the giving season. Holy Angels selected 2013’s Giving Tuesday to officially reopen the doors of Cherubs Café & Cherubs Candy Bouquet (following renovations and remodeling). A Free Lunch followed a ribbon cutting ceremony at our Main Street, Belmont location. Holy Angels and Cherubs Café & Cherubs Candy Bouquet used this opportunity to celebrate Giving Tuesday; to ultimately give back and give thanks for our customers who have supported the vocational program. Laurie Lewis along with Katie and Amy are ready to serve Cherubs Cafe customers - always with a smile. Regina Moody, Holy Angels President/CEO, said, “We have been serving our famous Chicken Pecan Salad in Downtown Belmont for 17 years – and we would like to celebrate the community’s support with a day we hope will warm your heart. What better way to say thank you than with a free lunch served with a smile by one of our supported employees.” Supported Employee, Cheryl, assists in the Cherubs Cafe kitchen. 6600 Wilkinson Boulevard PO Box 710 Belmont, NC 28012-0710 A new logo, designed by Lyerly Agency, was introduced to customers as part of the grand re-opening. From My Perspective... Regina P. Moody, President/CEO It is hard to believe that Christmas has come and gone. On behalf of our residents, their families and our staff, I would like to thank the many individuals, companies, churches, schools, and other groups throughout the Charlotte region who supported us so generously during the recent Christmas season. Our campus and homes were beautifully decorated thanks to Lynn Leonard and all her Christmas “elves” volunteers. Countless individuals and members of civic and church groups brought presents as well as gifts of money, equipment and other necessities for our residents, who have intellectual developmental disabilities,. Every gift, every visit, every Christmas carol that was sung and every prayer brought love and joy to our Holy Angels family. 21846_HolyAngels_Newsletter.indd 8 We feel incredibly blessed through the support we receive from our many donors throughout the year with our special events such as the annual Angel Bowl, our Carolina Classic Golf tournament and the Grazie Mille Gala and Tuscan Cooking Experience. Year round, many of you offer your assistance on needed projects around our campus and with our residents. You make it possible for us to offer a place of loving, living and learning for the differently able, many who have delicate medical conditions. I am overwhelmed at the generosity you show toward our residents. We are grateful for your continued support of our Holy Angels ministry. Regina P. Moody, M.Ed. President/CEO P.S.: We pray you and your family will be blessed with joy and happiness throughout 2014. 2/24/14 11:27 AM
