Before Refurbishing After Refurbishing CASE STUDY: The Brewers MILWAUKEE BREWERS’ RACING SAUSAGES One of the best examples of how to use a mascot successfully is a story of something that started small and, over time, has grown to represent a company, a professional baseball team, and a city - the Milwaukee Brewers’ Racing Sausages. The Olympus Group Mascot Division is proud to have partnered with the Brewers in creating these one-of-a-kind mascots. HISTORY In the early 90’s, it all began simply enough as one of many animated scoreboard races. Klement’s Bratwurst, Polish, and Italian Sausages became a staple of every home game, racing after the 6th inning to an enthusiastic crowd. IDEA The scoreboard race became wildly popular and the Brewers had the foresight to develop character costumes for the racing sausages. In 1995, the Bratwurst, Italian, and Polish took the field for the first time - Klement’s and the Brewers have not looked back since. COSTUMES At first, the race consisted of the three original racing sausages. A Hot Dog character was soon added to the line-up, followed by a Chorizo in 2006. POPULARITY-BRANDING The success of the promotion is evident by the demand the costumes generate. There are countless requests for appearances and the sausages even travel around in their own fully decorated van (printed by Olympus Group’s custom printing division). They have made guest appearances around the country, they were featured in hundreds of newspaper articles, stars of an ESPN commercial, and even have their own 5K run/walk. REVENUE GENERATING The characters have become one of the more popular and unique features of games at Miller Park and the Brewers have capitalized on their success. In the stadium, you can buy a variety of items featuring the sausages, including: tee-shirts, plush toys, bobbleheads, pins, etc. The Brewers and Klement’s Racing Sausages have brought priceless and unimaginable free advertising, publicity, and goodwill to both the team and the sponsor. CASE STUDY: Culver’s CULVER’S RESTAURANT’S SCOOPIE HISTORY In 1984, the Culver family opened their first restaurant in Sauk City, a small southern Wisconsin community located about an hour west of Madison. Today this same family-owned and operated culture expands to over 500 restaurants in 22 states. Culver’s attributes the success of franchise restaurants to the owner/operator concept. Every franchisee operates their restaurant in a full-time capacity. Culver’s is passionate about providing: • Great service in a family-friendly atmosphere • Great-tasting, hand-crafted, cooked to order food • An environment that is genuine and respectful of team members IDEA Along with this growth have come significant changes in how Culver’s markets their brand. Their marketing team continuously develops and researches new ideas in order to tailor to their consumers accordingly. One concept that has remained a staple, yet been refined over time, is their beloved mascot “Scoopie”. Scoopie was born over 20 years ago. Standing 6’1”, this icon certainly gains attention and puts smiles on people’s faces all across the nation. MASCOT ICON When Scoopie was first introduced to the public, Culver’s had less than 100 locations in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois. Two mascots were shared by all the locations. As Scoopie grew in popularity, more costumes were produced to accommodate the demand for his appearance at fund-raisers, community and school events. Now many franchises have their own Scoopie mascot. BRANDING The core values in which the company was founded on; commitment to hometown values, working hard and providing quality products are further demonstrated through the use of Scoopie in the community. All of the events Scoopie participates in allow Culver’s the opportunity to give back to their communities, further promote their brand and reinforce the company’s brand experience. Scoopie is a living, breathing icon that continues to promote Culver’s brand in an engaging, positive and energetic way.
