Meet your Spartan Mascot: Chris Godin (10) Something that my peers will be surprised to learn about me: I can sing. sing. I just learned and I am kindkind-of new at it; my mother died 5 years ago; I moved here from Thorold. How many years have you been the Spartan mascot? I have been the mascot for a year now. How did you become the Spartan mascot? I used to work at Little Caesars Caesars and one of my jobs was being their mascot. I was was really good; I was so good and distracting that I caused 3 car accidents! Then, I was in charge of the WSAID section of the [Santa] parade and I was talking to Mrs. K. K. Stuart about my Little Caesars Caesars job and Mr. Mazzone and Mr. Hilliker walked by. They asked me if I could do it. I said yes. I then did it in the parade and accidentally tripped a 2 yearyear-old! What events have you appeared at in costume? What are your roles and responsibilities at these events? I normally appear at big events – parades and things like that; sometimes football games or when the grade 8s come by. It also depends on the weather. My main job: HAVE FUN or at least look like it; it; hug kids, give them highhigh-fives; dance like there is no tomorrow. What is the best part about being the Spartan mascot? The worst? The best thing about my “mascot career” the past 3 years would be making people laugh and getting completely undivided attention. I also love the fact that I can look like a complete idiot and no one will know. The worst would be the heat and smell. The Westlane mascot costume is old and crappy now (sorry, Mr. Mazzone, but it is). I use shoelaces to keep it together. And the head wobbles around… How hot does it get in the suit? Is it heavy to wear? VERY hot, even when I am just just sitting. My favourite time to wear it is in the Santa Parade ‘cause it is freezing so it evens out. But I am used to the heat; I have been in many mascot suits over the years. 2. Chris Godin Profile The ‘two faces’ of Chris Godin: grade 10 student Chris Godin serves as the Spartan mascot at special events around Westlane and the Niagara Falls community. It is not so much heavy as it is awkward. You have to be gentle because everything is clothespins and hanging by a thread. And the the head… ugh, don’t even get me started… I use a fleshflesh-coloured towel to “attempt to keep it up.” It tends to be okay once I get used to it. Are you going to continue being the Spartan mascot? Oh yeah. I love being involved and getting my name out there. I love being the mascot. What other clubs and organizations are you involved in at school? Legitimately: Music Council president, WSAID (Westlane Students Against Impaired Driving) president; help out with Student Council, Stand Up, Youth in Action. Action. Activities: Activities: grade 8 visits, musicals, fundraisers, assemblies Final words: To all the newcomers to Westlane (and the oldies), I know you always hear “get involved.” Now a student is telling you GET INVOLVED!! It gives you something to look forward to every week. week. You meet new people. And it looks GREAT on a resume. ;) If you wish to get involved, don’t be afraid to ask me. Thanks!! ☺ iSpartan Trial Edition Mr. Spartan 2011 Westlane students Andrew St. Amour (11) and Tim Anger (12), along with St. Michael’s Dimitri Karounos (12) and Cid Segovia, make up the heavy metal band Civil Hades.
