Father’s Notes
When people think of the book of
Revelation they often think, “end of the world,”
apocalypse, four horsemen and doom. That is not
entirely false, but not entirely true either. The book gets
its name from the first word “apokalypsis” which basically means “revelation.” Lots of people mistakenly call
this the “Book of Revelations.” That is plural. That is
wrong. It is a singular revelation. This revelation is a
vision that St. John received on the island of Patmos.
We know that because he tells us a few verses later.
Patmos is an island in the Aegean Sea that the Romans
used as a place to exile political prisoners during the
time of John’s vision. So what was revealed? Jesus is
revealed.
John received from the Lord a vision on the
“Lord’s Day.” In ancient times as today the Lord’s Day
for the Christian is Sunday, the day of the Resurrection.
Because this vision takes place on a Sunday the Church
has chosen some of the book to be proclaimed on some
Sundays of the Easter Season. This book is highly symbolic and is difficult to understand. But through the eyes
of the Christian many of the symbols and images Jesus
reveals to John become clear if we know about the Liturgy. The book of Revelation take place during the heavenly Mass.
Take this week’s reading for example. John
witnesses to the Heavenly Worship of God. We call part
of our earthly worship of God the Mass. The angels,
living creatures, and elders cry out their praises to the
Lamb on the throne. Well the Lamb is Jesus remember,
“This is the Lamb of God who take away the sins of the
world.” And the rest of the characters set the scene like
before we sing the Holy, Holy. “With all the choirs of
angels we sing…” So the next time you go to mass on
earth know that you participate in the Mass of Heaven.
Who knows, maybe Jesus will reveal something to you
Fr. Jeff vez Jesús te revelará algo a ti.
