KENT COUNTY DIRECTORY 2015-2016 • The Kent County Recycling & Education Center recycles 90,000 lbs of paper every day – about 750 trees worth of paper! • Each bale of paper, plastic and metal weighs close to 1 ton, or a Volkswagen Beetle! • Paper is the commodity that is recycled in the greatest volume at our facility. • The Recycling & Education Center recycles 300 times more paper than aluminum. • The Resource Recovery Program conducts free tours of the Recycling & Education Center. Each Year, more than 4,000 adults and students visit the facility. Tours of the Kent County Recycling and Education Center are free. Tours can be scheduled for schools or organizations. The facility is open to the public on Mondays between 2:00-6:00 pm. Visitors can watch the sorting process from the second floor observation platform. We are very pleased to highlight some of the critical environmental services the Department of Public Works provides our citizens. Kent County remains the fourth largest county in the state with a population of over 600,000. The 2015-2016 directory is organized according to county, city, township and village offices, affording you access to your local government. If you need more information, please call or stop by the County Building with your questions or concerns. Sincerely, Editor: Kim Perry, Assistant to the County Clerk. Thank You for Recycling! 2 The Kent County Department of Public Works (DPW) is an enterprise fund of Kent County established in 1969 by the then Kent County Board of Supervisors. The department has evolved into the local planning agency managing all municipal solid waste in the county. Through a variety of environmental programs and facilities, DPW safely manages trash, household hazardous waste and residential recyclables including oversight and management of three closed landfills in Kent County. The Recycling & Education Center (featured on the front cover) serves as the primary materials recovery facility for residential recyclables generated in homes throughout West Michigan. Nearly 64 million pounds of recyclables were delivered to the facility in 2014, more than double the amount recycled just four years ago. With the State of Michigan’s goal to double the municipal recycling rate by April 2016, this facility and the DPW Resource Recovery Programs will play a significant role in reaching this goal. Resource Recovery Specialists assist residents in learning about recycling and other waste-reduction efforts through facility tours and community outreach. Each year, approximately 366 million pounds of municipal solid waste trash is incinerated and energy is recovered at the Kent County Waste to Energy (WTE) Facility. Nearly 25% of the volume of municipal solid waste generated in the County is utilized to produce electricity. The leftover ash is sent to South Kent Landfill, taking up 90% less landfill space by volume and 77% less space by weight. The majority of trash from the cities of Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kentwood, Walker and Wyoming is delivered to the WTE facility for energy recovery. In 2014, South Kent Landfill and North Kent Transfer Station received 280 million pounds of trash from Kent and surrounding counties. Specialized compacting equipment conserves space in the landfill and trash from the Transfer Station is compacted into trailers and transferred to a landfill. The South Kent Landfill maintains an environmental management system meeting ISO 14001 standards. To schedule an informative tour of any of these facilities, visit our website at www.accesskent.com/waste or call 616-336-4617. A special thank you to the Department of Public Works Staff, especially Kristen Wieland, Resource Recovery / Recycling Manager. 3 KENT COUNTY ELECTED OFFICIALS The County Clerk is Clerk of the Circuit Court and is the official recorder of not only Circuit Court records but also County records such as births, deaths, marriages and business registrations. The grapple is operated by a technician, seen in the booth in the background. The baler condenses recyclables to about 25% of their original volume to make transportation more efficient. Glass is the only commodity that doesn't get baled. 46 HEADER here NEWS MEDIA Advance Newspapers 2141 Port Sheldon Jenison, MI 49428 Ph: (616) 669-2700 Fx: (616) 669-4848 [email protected] Mike Wyngarden Managing Editor El Vocero Hispano Newspaper 2818 Vineland Ave SE Grand Rapids, MI 49508 Ph: (616) 246-6023 Fx: (616) 246-1228 www.elvocerous.com / [email protected] Andres Abreu Editor Grand Rapids Business Journal 549 Ottawa Ave NW Grand Rapids, MI 49503 Ph: (616) 459-4545 Fx: (616) 459-4800 www.grbj.com Carole Valade Editor Peter Daly Reporter The Grand Rapids Press (mlivemediagroup) 169 Monroe Ave, Ste 100 Grand Rapids, MI 49503 Ph: (616) 224-2350 Fx: (616) 458-2579 Grand Rapids Times 2016 Eastern SE Grand Rapids, MI 49507 Ph: (616) 245-8737 Fx: (616) 245-1026 www.grtimes.com / [email protected] Unity Magazine 1014 Franklin St SE Grand Rapids, MI 49507-1327 Ph: (616) 243-1919 [email protected] Julie Hoogland Community News Director Patricia Pulliam Editor-in-Chief / Publisher Patricia E. recycled - enough to build the Gerald R. Ford Aircraft Carrier. • Over 4.5 million tons of solid waste have been processed - saving more than 5,600 acres of landfill space. • Over 2.3 million megawatts of electricity have been sold (15 megawatts of electricity can power about 11,000 homes). Our mascot for recycling programs is KC The Raccoon. He drives our recycling truck around to schools and public events to promote recycling. Contact us to have KC visit your event!
