The new machine is the first in Des Moines to offer patients a more comfortable MRI exam. Dixie Ferguson, BS RT(R)(MR), Mercy’s MRI manager, said the new machine has many features providers and patients will enjoy. “Larger patients or patients who are claustrophobic will Christian O’Connor with GE (center) explains benefit from the 70-centimeter-wide bore features of the new machine to Mercy employees (l-r) Kay Harrington and Amanda Wingate. and a cushioned table surface,” she said. “Providers will be able to send patients who need imaging near metal implants – such as a hip replacement – because this particular model has metal suppression capabilities and it provides superior images.” She said the new 1.5T also allows for many patients to enter the machine feet-first and has the option to make some tests quieter. This is significant as some patients are alarmed by the noises they hear during an MRI and the noise can also be a safety hazard. Daniel Shamblen, a patient of Mercy Neurosurgery and Mercy Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR), recently walked across the stage to receive his diploma at Lincoln High School. Daniel was born prematurely with cerebral palsy and has used a wheelchair his entire life. Years ago, he set a goal to walk across the stage on graduation day, without using his wheelchair. To help him achieve his goal, Dr. John Gachiani inserted a Baclofen pump, which contains medication to help with spasticity. This allows the body to function more efficiently and be more productive during physical therapy sessions. Dr. Mary Russell helped manage the pump during his therapy. When Daniel walked across that stage, he received a standing ovation from his teachers and peers. To our staff at Mercy Neurosurgery and Mercy PMR – thank you for Living Up to help Daniel achieve his goal! Everyone at Mercy wishes Daniel the best of luck in his future endeavors and we know he will continue to work hard to make his dreams come true.
