TWENTY FIVE MERCY CLINICS RECEIVE NCQA PATIENTCENTERED MEDICAL HOME RECOGNITION
The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) recently
announced 25 Mercy Clinics received NCQA Patient-Centered
Medical Home (PCMH) Recognition for using evidence-based,
patient-centered processes that focus on highly coordinated care
and long‐term, participative relationships.
“We are incredibly proud of our physicians and staff at all of the
Mercy Clinics locations for dedicating a significant amount of time
and effort to improve the care each of our patients receive,” said Tim
McCoy, D.O., Mercy Clinics quality medical director, and PCMH
steering committee member. “Our culture has always been about
quality and is increasingly focused on keeping the patient and their
experience as the primary focus in all aspects of care they receive.”
To earn recognition, which is valid for three years, Mercy Clinics
demonstrated the ability to meet the program’s key elements,
embodying characteristics of the medical home.

NEW MRI DEBUTS AT MERCY WEST
MEDICAL IMAGING
A new GE OptimaTM MR450W 1.5T
wide bore MRI was unveiled at an open
house event on Tuesday, June 2, at
Mercy West Medical Imaging. The
new machine is the first in Des Moines
to offer patients a more comfortable
MRI exam.
Dixie Ferguson, BS RT(R)(MR), Mercy’s
MRI manager, said the new machine
has many features providers and
patients will enjoy. “Larger patients or
patients who are claustrophobic will

and a cushioned table surface,” she said.
“Providers will be able to send patients
who need imaging near metal implants – such as a hip replacement – because this
particular model has metal suppression capabilities and it provides superior images.”
She said the new 1.5T also allows for many patients to enter the machine feet-first
and has the option to make some tests quieter. This is significant as some patients are
alarmed by the noises they hear during an MRI and the noise can also be a
safety hazard.

2 HIPS . . . HOORAY! ORTHO SERVICES
AT MERCY HELP PATIENTS GET BACK TO
LIVING THE LIFE THEY LOVE
This month, Mercy is highlighting our orthopedic services throughout the
community. We’re proud of the exceptional services offered at Mercy – from
being recognized as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacement
by Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, to having the area’s only orthopedic
traumatologist in our Emergency Department. Be on the lookout for the orthothemed billboards, “Des Moines Register” ads, elevator signs, radio spots, Jordan
Creek posters, KCCI digital ads and visit the Mercy blog to learn about broken
bones on our downloadable infographic - mercy.dm/brokenbones. And last,
but certainly not least - a big thank you to our orthopedic team for providing
outstanding bone and joint care to our patients!
WHAT’S UP?
ANOTHER GREAT
EXAMPLE OF LIVING UP!
Daniel Shamblen, a patient of Mercy
Neurosurgery and Mercy Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR),
recently walked across the stage to
receive his diploma at Lincoln High
School. Daniel was born prematurely
with cerebral palsy and has used a
wheelchair his entire life. Years ago,
he set a goal to walk across the stage
on graduation day, without using his
wheelchair.
To help him achieve his goal, Dr. John
Gachiani inserted a Baclofen pump,
which contains medication to help
with spasticity. This allows the body to
function more efficiently and be more
productive during physical therapy
sessions. Dr. Mary Russell helped
manage the pump during his therapy.
When Daniel walked across that stage,
he received a standing ovation from his
teachers and peers.
To our staff at Mercy Neurosurgery and
Mercy PMR – thank you for Living Up to
help Daniel achieve his goal! Everyone
at Mercy wishes Daniel the best of luck
in his future endeavors and we know he
will continue to work hard to make his
dreams come true.
