Why don’t most people know who owns the union? When asked, most union members would answer “the union President,” or “the executive board or union representatives.” In fact, the union President, the business representatives and executive board are not owners of the union, but rather employees of the union. The owners of the union are you and your coworkers (fellow union members). And any union is only as strong as its members, which is something very important to keep in mind on those occasions when you find yourself wondering, “What’s my union doing for me?” We all have very busy lives, and our jobs are just a part of the day. But if you want to improve your working conditions and have stronger contracts, then you must find the time to voice your opinions and take a more active role in your union. The next question you may have is, “OK, what should I do to step up and take ownership?” If you don’t have a copy of your union contract, ask your union representative for one. If you don’t know who your union rep is, you can find out by looking on your union website (www.ufcw653. org) or just call your union office at 763-525-1500. You don’t need to be an expert on the contract but you should have some idea what benefits and protections you have as a member of Local 653. Read our monthly union publication called the “Fact Finder.” The Fact Finder has stories about the goings-on of your union, what contract negotiations are in progress, stories about the retail meat and grocery industry, health care industry, retail and wholesale meat shops, sausage plant, Hirshfield’s retail outlets and paint plant, Gold Cross ambulance paramedics and many other things. Check out your union website, “www.ufcw653.org,” where you can get information on union activities, find out who your executive board members are, or who your business reps are. You can see many of the benefits available to you as a member of Local 653, including tickets to the Twins, Wild, Vikings, Lynx, Timberwolves, Minnesota Zoo, and Valleyair. There is a link to Wilson-McShane Corp., who are our health and welfare and pension administrators. Did you know your union (you) owns a resort on the north shore of Lake Superior? It’s called Ours Resort and is exclusively for the membership and families of 653 members. You also own a campground on Lake Ida just outside of Monticello, MN called Camp 653 with campsites, docks, family friendly swimming beach, indoor bathrooms and showers—all less than one hour from Minneapolis! You also are part owner of the Local 653 office building in Maple Grove, MN, just off Bass Lake Road and 494. Part of that building is a beautiful event hall, called The Hall at 653. We have our union meetings, contract negotiations and ratifications there. You can see The Hall at 653 on its website (www.hall653.org) or stop in and tour it for yourself. It is available to union members to rent for weddings and other events. If you stop by the union office and I’m in the office I would love to buy you a pop and give you a tour! Don’t take this lightly—this is our backyard. Target has their red bull’s-eye aimed directly at OUR EMPLOYERS. This is their home, too. They have 75 stores in Minnesota, and of those 75 stores there are 24 SuperTargets in the Twin Cities and surrounding metro area. There are 27 Targets that they call P-Fresh Targets which carry dry groceries, refrigerated and frozen dairy, meat and produce. That’s 51 Target stores that compete directly with OUR EMPLOYERS. So this is a very serious situation going on in New York. Workers at the Valley Stream Target in New York were seeking Union representation from UFCW Local 1500 based out of Westbury, New York. On April 26, 2013, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) overturned the results of a union election based on Target’s workers’ rights violations at their store in Valley Stream during the campaign last year. Additionally, the Board found that Target systematically violated the rights of workers nationwide by maintaining illegal work rules designed to keep workers from speaking out for change at work. Also, in a broad sweeping decision that will affect all current Target employees nationwide, the NLRB ordered Target to modify all existing and future employee handbooks throughout the country and remove all wording that the NLRB found that violated federal law. A decision of this magnitude is unprecedented as it relates to retail workers and stores. Target illegally threatened on a number of occasions to close the store in Valley Stream if workers successfully organized a union. The labor board also decided the retailer unlawfully created the impression that workers’ union activities were under surveillance and that supervisors told workers they could not solicit on behalf of the union in nonunion areas. Those days of illegal worker intimidation and suppression are over. The right to stick together at work is a basic American value. In this case, despite Target’s legal maneuverings to avoid responsibility, the retailer has been held accountable for suppressing the rights of the Long Island workers and for the company’s nationwide policy to silence all their workers. This is not just an isolated instance and Target is not an isolated employer. Too often, major employers get away with systematically silencing millions of American workers from speaking out about their jobs. To stand against freedom of speech like Target did is not just wrong, it’s un-American.” As more information becomes available, I will keep you informed. As of today a new Union election has been ordered at the Valley Stream, New York Target store. The judge’s decision of May 2012 has been upheld that Target Corporation cease and desist all illegal activities that voided the first union election. This is very important since this could affect what happens here as Target opens more Superstores around the city. June 2013 - Fact Finder - Pg 3 856.indd 3 5/28/13 1:54 PM Recognizing how important education is for the future growth of the young people in this country, Local 653 is again this year awarding ten $1,000 educational grants to our members or their dependents to further their education. The winners will receive a one-time educational grant in the amount of $1,000 to be applied to the verified school for tuition, books, or room and board. The only qualification is that the student will be attending a college, university, junior college, or technical school. The ten winners will be randomly drawn at the August Executive Board meeting from the applications submitted, and winners will be notified in writing after the drawing has taken place. Pg 4 - Fact Finder - June 2013 856.indd 4 5/28/13 1:54 PM Rainbow Foods Closes Two Stores By Paul Crandall Rainbow Foods sadly has closed two stores in the Minneapolis Local 653 jurisdiction—Robbinsdale closed its doors on April 10 and the Rockford Road location in Plymouth closed on May 8. Robbinsdale opened in the spring of 1981 as an Applebaum’s store with a brand new concept. I still can remember the searchlights or movie lights crisscrossing the sky at night during the grand opening! Gordy Gongoll, who was the Local 653 business agent for that store, wrote in the Fact Finder: “Upon entering the store you get the feeling of a circular setting, with produce, meat, dairy, deli, bakery and sandwich shop around the outside and in the center, islands of groceries displayed in the no-frills concept or cut box look. Could this be the new look of Applebaum’s and the store of the future?” When customers were introduced to this concept, it was one of the first big box stores with a heavy push on the generic label and can goods sold in case lots. This concept turned hot in the 80s as Cub built stores rapidly into the mid 1990s. Rainbow in Plymouth featured the big store concept with extra service, featuring a salad bar, fresh meat service case, and a first in the industry—Rainbow Playland, a site designed for shoppers to drop off the kids while you shop. While closing two locations is not a positive for market share, closing these locations affected one hundred jobs and the company worked extremely hard to place as many employees as possible in other Rainbow Food stores, transferring all the full-time workers to other locations and part-timers with five years or more by union contract. Meetings were set up at both locations with Mike Goldman from the State of Minnesota Dislocated Workers Program, who went over options, programs, and unemployment with those employees who would not be retained by Rainbow. As of this writing, there are about 15 employees who were not placed in other locations, and for those who want to remain in the industry we are working to get them placed as quickly as possible. Employees and residents have long anticipated this new culture and building in Anoka. The rumor of this building predates my time of calling on this facility starting back in 2007. Through a lot of hard work and commitment, “Homestead at Anoka” has become a reality. Anticipation, excitement and nervousness have filled employees since the announcement of the building just over a year ago. Things have moved fast and it seems like we were just starting the transition not that long ago. The monumental task of transferring residents to the new facility went as smoothly as could be expected. The facility’s license required them to transfer residents from building to building all on the same day. Everyone worked together to make this transition for the residents, although the building is new for everyone. From the outside the building is a structure that invites people in, as its combination of architecture and décor resembles that of a house. The interior provides a cozy, warm welcome to its residents. As I have talked with employees, they have found one of the biggest challenges to be the difference in size from the previous building. This new facility offers memory care, cardiac care, transitional care, long-term care, as well as assisted living. The “neighborhood” transition is also a change. While the transition has been a challenge for all, the team at Homestead of Anoka has risen to the challenge and is moving forward. June 2013 - Fact Finder - Pg 9 856.indd 9 5/28/13 1:55 PM There’s Still Time to Join Me in Losing Weight… By Nancy Vaillancourt As we begin the Biggest Loser contest again and I’m out in stores talking to people about it, I keep hearing, “I should sign up,” or “I need to lose weight, but I have no motivation.” I wish I could push each and every one of you who has told me you should sign up into doing just that. I have also been one of “those” people. I am not eligible for the contest, but as of May 5, 2013, I have finally hit rock bottom and am on a mission. Thirteen years ago I lost over 40 pounds, and did a great job keeping it all off until six years ago. I can come up with a ton of excuses for things changing--my job change, where I now sit at my desk or in my car instead of running around in the stores; the stress of my recent divorce; kids’ activities taking up a lot of time; getting “older”… you name it. As of May 5, 2013, I have put it all back on, plus some. Let me tell you—it is not a good feeling. I cried when I stepped on the scale, and having my dad tell my mom she needed to have a talk with me… it all hurt. But what a reality check! So, “Enough,” I said, and immediately started making changes. I no longer drink five to six cans of diet pop each day, and no more drive-thru lunches. Those changes alone have helped! As of today (May 14) I am already down six pounds! My goal is to be down 30 pounds by October 6 for the final weigh-in. I will be writing about my progress over the next few months. My goal is to get a workout routine going as well. I want to inspire as many as I can to join me! The contest is still open for you to join. You will just have a little less time to lose than those signing up in May, but remember—it’s never too late. Call me (763-525-1500) to set up an appointment to weigh in. There seems to be some misconception by the people doing scheduling that as long as the schedule is posted “sometime” on Friday, that it is okay, and posting it on Saturday is only a “little late.” WRONG! The contract states that the schedule will be posted by 12:00 noon on Friday: Schedules for all full-time employees will be posted in each store by Friday 12:00 noon for the following two (2) workweeks. Sunday schedule for full-time employees shall be posted two (2) weeks in advance. Schedules for the top twenty four percent (24%) part-time (Group 2 Employees) shall be posted in each store by Friday noon for the following two (2) workweeks, including Sundays. (The top twenty-four percent [24%] of the Group 2 employees are defined as Food Handlers and Certified Pharmacy Technicians in each store.) Schedules for all other part-time employees will be posted in each store by Friday noon for the following workweek. Los horarios para los del veinte y cuatro por ciento principales (24%) de tiempo parcial (Empleados del Grupo 2) deben de ser publicados en cada tienda durante el medio día de cada viernes publicando dos (2) semanas de trabajo, incluyendo los domingos. (Los empleados principales del Grupo dos (2) se definen como los empleados que son Manejadores de Comida y los Técnicos Farmacéuticos en cada tienda.) Seniority does count to some extent in this group, in that a senior employee has the right to have as many or more hours than a junior employee. But if you limit your availability to a company, you may lose this right. This is always important to keep in mind if you want as many hours as possible. There also seems to be confusion about when an employee asks for a day or days off. The company does have to consider the rest of the workweek’s hours and the availability for which the employee could be scheduled. The contract does not allow the company to overlook or disqualify the employee from reaching as many hours as possible as long as seniority status and availability are followed. If a person has been scheduled incorrectly and there is a violation of seniority relating to the number of hours scheduled for such junior employees, the employer shall correct such violation by rescheduling during the following four-week period.
