' 6 Spring 2013 7 ' Lou'Campbell,'Hovey'Burgess,'William'Burdick,'and'Judy'Burgess'with'Laura'Lisa'&'Lisette' Campbell' From%the%collection%of%the%author% ' Dr.)Lou)Campbell%is%the%Executive%Director%and%creator%of%Enclave%of%the%Arts%in%Fort%Worth,% Texas.%%In%1974,%Dr.%Lou%was%the%Director%of%the%International%Mime%Institute%and%Festival%and% the%Chairman%of%the%Theater%Arts%Department%at%Viterbo%College%in%La%Crosse,%Wisconsin.% ' What'was'I'thinking?''My'fundamental'reason'for'doing'the'festival'was'my'investigation'of' ‘the'gesture’.''''I'had'just'received'my'doctorate,'and'with'that'in'hand'I'sent'out'a'resume,' and'Viterbo'College'responded.''In'my'interview'with'the'priest'at'the'college'who'was'the' president'he'said,'“We'want'you'to'do'something'to'put'the'school'on'the'map.”''At'that' point,'I'imagined'my'interest'in'pursuing'my'study'of'gesture'so'I'replied,'“I'want'to'do'an' international'institute'and'festival'of'mime'and'pantomime.”''To'which'he'gave'me'that' startled'look,'because'as'he'admitted'later,'he'was'hoping'I'would'bring'in'Robert'Goulet' and'we’d'do'Promises,%Promises.''So'you'see'that'indeed'my'fundamental'reason'for'doing' an'International'Mime'Festival'and'Institute'at'Viterbo'College'was'my'investigation'of'‘the' gesture’.' ' In'1974'I'had'no'established'precedent.''I'was'young'enough'and'naïve'enough'and'dumb' enough'to'take'it'on.''As'it'happened,'other'people'flew'alongside'me.''The'only'thing'I' could'guarantee'was'that'every'student'there'would'be'directly'exposed'to'every'master' teacher'and'every'performing'artist'that'was'there.''' ' To'fund'the'endeavor'we'had'four'benefactors'who'put'up'$25,000'each.''I'thought'I'could' do'the'festival'for'$100,000!''That’s'how'dumb'I'was.''The'entire'festival'ended'up'costing' more'like'a'quarter'of'a'million,'but'that'was'not'a'problem.''The'support'for'the'festival,' including'$20,000'from'the'National'Endowment'for'the'Arts'paid'for'it'all.' 7 8 ATME News ' We'got'a'lot'of'very'interesting'people'together'who'knew'each'other,'but'they’d'never'met' each'other.''They’d'never'seen'each'other'perform.''Thankfully'the'environment'during'the' three'weeks'just'happened'to'be'not'your'typical'big'egos.''For'me,'the'bottom'line'was'all' the'students'who'came.''This'particular'group'of'students'was'devoted'to'the'craft.''None'of' the'students'there'needed'to'know'“why,”'they'just'wanted'to'be'mimes.' ' Every'major'network'was'there.''Every'major'newspaper'was'there.''In'fact'the'ten'major' newspapers'in'the'world'were'there!''People'were'coming'from'all'over'the'place.'' Everybody'was'on'the'campus.''Everybody'ate'together.''By'default'I'gave'the'college'what' they'wanted.''Holding'the'International'Mime'Festival'and'Institute'on'campus'did'put' Viterbo'College'on'the'map!' ' Mummenschanz'press'photo['1974' From%the%collection%of%the%author% ' ' Floriana)Frassetto%is%the%coLinventor%of%the%repertoire%of%the%contemporary%Swiss%mask% theater%troupe,%Mummenschanz,%and%she%still%plays%in%each%performance.%%In%1974%she%and%her% partners%Bernie%Schurch%and%Andres%Bossard%were%into%their%third%year%performing%together% as%Mummenschanz%when%they%appeared%at%the%festival.% % Lou'(Dr.'Lou'Campbell)'was'so'brave.''''Even'now,'I'applaud'his'desire'to'blend'so'many' disciplines'into'one'festival.''I'remember'that'we'were'on'our'second'tour'of'America.'' Viterbo'was'the'first'performance,'and'then'we'were'on'to'California.''We'rented'a'car.''We' had'toilet'paper'and'masks'and'everything'packed'into'the'car.''Our'time'in'Viterbo'was' 8 Spring 2013 9 extraordinary.''It'was'like'a'little'touch'of'Europe'in'North'America,'with'a'great'audience.'' We'enjoyed'being'part'of'a'wonderful'melting'pot'of'American,'European,'and'Asian'artists' who'spoke'from'the'heart.''Lou'really'did'open'the'eyes'of'many'to'many'different'styles!' ' Robert)Shields%is%a%jeweler,%sculptor,%painter,%and%comedy%writer%who%resides%in%Sedona,% Arizona,%with%his%wife%and%cat.%%%%In%1974%he%attended%the%festival%as%one%half%of%what%would% become%the%world%famous%mime%duo,%Robert%Shields%&%Lorene%Yarnell.% ' Oh'my'God!''You'mean'in'Wisconsin?''Oh,'that'was'really'wild!''That'was'an'amazing' festival!''We'had'no'name'there'at'all.''We'were'being'introduced.''We'didn’t'really'know' when'we'did'our'show'that'we'would'be'such'a'hit.''Remember,'we'were'a'new'generation' coming'up.''We'reflected'the'wants'of'our'generation,'so'our'work'moved'faster'and'was' more'relevant'to'the'young'people'at'the'festival.'''In'Viterbo'that'was'the'first'time'anyone' ever'saw'the'robot.''We'closed'the'show'with'“Robots'Eating'Breakfast.”''Now'look'at'it,'it’s' a'classic.''' ' At'that'festival'it'was'fantastic'to'be'with'people'of'like'minds'who'were'all'together.''It'was' such'a'wonderful'group.''There'wasn’t'any'competition'going'on,'although'some'of'the' older'mimes'hated'what'we'did.''They'couldn’t'stand'it,'but'the'younger'people'loved'it.''I' remember'Carlo'Mazzone'Clementi'saying'to'me,'“Robert,'why'do'you'have'to'do'this'kind' of'mime?''It'is'not'good'for'the'art.''It'is'not'good.''It'needs'to'be'mature.”''You'see,'Carlo' didn’t'understand'that'I'consider'myself'an'entertainer'and'a'mime,'and'we'were'just'not' his'cup'of'tea.' ' That'festival'was'in'the'summer'of'1974,'and'in'1975'we'moved'to'L.A.'where'we'were'on' the'Sonny'&'Cher'Show.''Bingo!''We'won'the'Ted'Mack'Amateur'Contest.''Out'of'3,000' people'we'won!''Then'there'was'a'Burt'Reynolds'Talent'Contest,'and'we'came'in'second.'' After'that'Merv'Griffin'discovered'us,'and'Mike'Douglas.''All'of'a'sudden'we'got'our'show' on'Carson.''By'1977,'we'had'our'own'TV'series.'' ' Lorene'(Lorene'Yarnell)'and'I'came'away'from'Viterbo'with'a'name.''We'were'the'new' discovery.''We'were'doing'stuff'that'was'different'from'Dimitri'and'Mummenschanz,'but'all' of'us'made'it.''We'were'all'unique,'and'we'had'something'that'people'wanted'to'see.''Look' what'happened.''We'made'it'immediately'into'the'main'stream'of'commercial'television!''' ' 9 10 ATME News Dimitri'press'photo['1974' From%the%collection%of%the%author% ' ' Mike)Evans%is%a%video%artist%who%specializes%in%videotaping%the%work%of%dancer%Katie%Duck% (formerly%Katie%Berger).%%In%1974%he%attended%the%festival%as%the%technician%for%the%Salt%Lake% Mime%Troupe.% ' I'was'a'long[haired'art'student'who'fell'into'videotaping'dance.''I'thought'this'mime'and' dance'stuff'was'pretty'cool'so'I'was'seeing'everything'through'those'eyes.' ' For'me,'the'greatest'workshop'at'Viterbo'was'Hovey'Burgess’s'ongoing'juggling'workshop.'''' It'went'on'all'day,'so'when'you'had'a'moment'to'kill,'you’d'just'go'out'on'the'lawn'and' there'were'always'at'least'a'dozen'people'out'there,'and'you’d'start'juggling.''Hovey'had' equipment'for'everybody:''so'you’d'go'out'there'and'you’d'start'learning'about'something.'' One'morning'Robert'Shields'was'on'the'lawn'doing'his'morning'workout,'and'a'group'of' students'were'doing'a'similar'workout'nearby.''He'just'stepped'up'to'them'and'they'got'to' talking'and'he'ended'up'doing'a'“falling”'workshop.''It'was'good!''That,'too,'was'part'of' Hovey’s'ongoing'juggling'workshop.''' ' Lecoq’s'workshops'were'like'an'earthquake.''They'were'an'earthquake'that'caused'fissures' and'cracks'throughout'the'whole'United'States.''Jacques'Lecoq'was'the'epicenter'of'by'far' the'biggest'and'most'profound'change'of'what'I'thought'about'mime.''' ' The'best'thing'for'the'mime'troupe,'the'thing'that'happened'for'all'of'us,'was'an'invitation' to'the'Festival'of'Fools.''You'see,'we'had'the'entire'band'and'all'the'dancers'from'the'mime' troupe.''So'I'got'a'place'for'us'to'perform.''Bari'Rolfe'shielded'us'a'bit,'and'we'were'able'to' pull'it'off.''After'that'performance,'some'of'the'members'of'the'Friends'Roadshow'came'up' and'said'it'would'do'very'well'in'Europe.''Their'leader,'Jango'Edwards,'came'up'later'and' said,'“I’ve'heard'great'things'about'your'show.”''Right'then'and'there'he'invited'us'to'the' 10 Spring 2013 11 Festival'of'Fools,'and'he'arranged'it.''He'kept'his'word,'too.''That'performance'resulted'in' an'epic'change'in'the'career'of'the'mime'troupe'and'in'my'own'life.''' ' ' Samuel'Avital['1974' Photo%by%Bill%Ray% % Samuel)Avital%is%an%artist,%performer,%teacher,%mentor,%creative%consultant,%coach,%and%author% in%Boulder,%Colorado.%%In%1974%he%attended%the%festival%as%a%performer.% ' I'thank'Lou'(Lou'Campbell)'for'doing'it.''It'was'the'first'time'we'all'ever'got'together.''The' atmosphere'was'very'good.''I'remember'that.''It'wasn’t'just'mime,'but'also'all'of'the'other' disciplines.''Dimitri'was'there.''He'was'wonderful!''I'became'a'good'friend'with'Mamako' Yoneyama.''She'is'a'fantastic'woman!''I'got'very'friendly'and'crazy'with'Carlo'(Carlo' Mazzone[Clementi).''Whenever'I'was'with'him'it'was'non[stop.''I'remember'that'Shields' and'Yarnell'were'very'energetic'also.''All'these'people'were'from'all'over.''It'was'so'good'to' see'them.' ' Most' of' the' artists' stayed' in' the' dormitory' and' most' of' the' meetings' happened' in' the' dining' hall.' ' So' I' remember' everyone' being' very' friendly.' ' In' the' dining' room,' in' the' evenings,'in'the'performances['all'of'the'other'artists'were'very'accessible.''The'schedule' was'quite'rigorous,'but'we'found'time'to'talk.''' ' After'the'festival'several'students'who'came'to'the'festival'came'to'my'studio'to'study'with' me.''I'think'it'was'good'for'the'mime'field.''It'was'good'that'we'all'were'together.' 11 12 ATME News ' ' Bob)Francesconi%is%the)Assistant%Dean%of%the%School%of%Drama%at%the%University%of%North% Carolina%School%of%the%Arts%in%WinstonLSalem,%NC.%%In%1974%Bob%was%one%half%of%the%Menagerie% Mime%Theatre%with%James%Donlon.%%They%performed%and%taught%at%the%festival.% ' Looking'back,'it'was'such'a'pleasure'to'be'in'La'Crosse'with'Jim'Donlon.''I'remember'that' we'tried'to'see'everything'that'we'could,'and'we'did.''One'of'the'things'that'impressed'us' both'was'how'advanced'the'material'was'from'the'Europeans;'especially'from'what'was' then'the'Communist'Bloc.''The'work'had'a'far'greater'edge.''That'kind'of'material'still' appeals'to'me'to'this'day'and'it'has'certainly'influenced'who'I'am'as'a'teacher'and'director.'' I'think'it'opened'my'eyes'to'a'kind'of'theatricality'that'goes'beyond'naturalism'and'a'kind' of'theatricality'that'probes'the'human'condition.''' ' When'I'saw'Byland'and'Gaulier'(Pierre'Byland'&'Philippe'Gaulier)'break'those'200'dishes' onstage'I'was'fascinated'by'it.''It'brought'me'in'touch'with'the'silent'clown'element.''You' know,'watching'the'manner'in'which'Dimitri'worked'influenced'me'also,'in'that'there'was' an'openness'and'an'availability'to'his'work.''The'group'that'really'was'seminal'though,'at' least'for'me,'would'be'the'original'Mummenschanz'group.''The'manner'in'which'they'used' the'mask'opened'new'possibilities'for'me.''' The'technique'was'modern'dance'and'the'emphasis'was'on'creating'and'telling'stories' through'dance.'Her'company'was'brought'out'to'perform'at'the'White'House'by'President' Kennedy.'' ' AT:'Were'you'a'part'of'that?' ' JT:'No,'that'was'a'little'before'my'time.'But'that'was'my'beginning.'' ' AT:'So'how'did'you'get'involved'in'mime?' ' JT:'I'went'through'the'University'of'Utah’s'modern'dance'department'and'the'department' of'theatre'in'their'acting'emphasis'program'and'I'found'that'with'studying'and'researching' dance'and'theatre'that'my'personal'interest'was'in'studying'a'combination'of'the'two.'But' there'weren’t'too'many'people'doing'that'then.'You'were'either'an'actor'or'you'were'a' dancer.'And'I'was'very'interested'in'what'technical'finesse,'and'accuracy,'specificity'that' dance'brought'to'my'acting.'But'at'the'same'time'I'really'loved'how'acting'fueled'my' dancing'and'how'both'informed'my'choreography.'I'was'working'with'Repertory'Dance' Theatre,'the'dance'company'in'Salt'Lake,'and'I'also'formed'a'company'with'some'peers,' called'Dance'Theatre'Coalition.'I'believe'that'company'still'exists.'We'were'interested'in' combining'the'two.'This'was'at'the'beginning'of'dance'theatre'in'this'country.' ' JT:'I'was'hired'in'1994.'My'hire'brought'about'a'shift'from'going'to'one'movement'class' maybe'two,'to'a'different'movement'curriculum'every'quarter.'So,'that'was'for'the' graduate'training.'Additionally'I'was'teaching'the'same'class'at'a'different'level'on'the' undergraduate'level.'And'we'officially'changed'the'focus'of'the'MFA'in'2000.'But'that'was' when'we'changed'our'curriculum.'I'was'posed'this'question'by'our'chair'at'that'time:'“Why' would'people'want'to'come'and'study'acting'in'Columbus,'Ohio?”'When'I'was'hired'the' chair'who'hired'me'said,'“We’re'hiring'you'so'that'you'can'develop'and'train'students'to'do' what'you'do'as'an'entrepreneurial'dance/theatre'artist.”'And'I'knew'that'I'had'an' opportunity'in'answering'the'question'why'come'to'Ohio'State.'I'knew'what'was'unique' about'our'program.'And'one'was'the'emphasis'on'movement'training'along'with'our' connection'to'the'Wexner'Center.'The'Wexner'Center'is'one'of'the'country’s'leading' contemporary'art'museums'and'presenting'organizations.'So'they'regularly'bring'in'the' SITI'company,'the'Wooster'Group,'DV8,'all'sorts'of'contemporary'movement'theatre' original'performing'artists'who'are'creating'original'work.'I'made'the'link.'This'is'what'is' unique'about'us.'Yes,'we'are'going'to'cover'the'classics'and'traditional'work'but'our'real' aim'the'reason'to'come'to'Ohio'State'is'because'this'is'what'we'are'looking'at.'We'are' looking'at'the'future,'not'necessarily'replicating'the'past.'The'past'is'important'to'know' about'and'to'have'solid'technique.'But'then'what'are'you'as'an'artist'going'to'do'about'it?' ' JT:'In'dance,'I'come'out'of'the'Merce'Cunningham,'Alvin'Nikolai'Martha'Graham'technique' and'with'one'of'the'most'influential'Nikolai'principles,'Tandy'Beal.'She'was'working,' probably'still'is,'on'the'west'coast.'She'was'a'major'influence'in'starting'to'pull'dance'and' 24 Spring 2013 25 theatre'together.'Marceau,'Gregg'Goldston,'Anne'Bogart,'John'Giffin'–'was'a'principle' performer'with'Pina'Bausch.'Ken'Washington.'He'is'someone'we'should'connect'with.'He' was'the'movement'instructor'for'University'of'Utah'in'the'theatre'program'and'he'was'one' of'the'only'faculty'members'who'encouraged'me'to'pursue'what'my'passion'and'vision' were.'He'left'Utah'early'80s'and'he'has'been'the'head'of'the'internship'program'at' Milwaukee'Rep.'He'made'a'huge'impact'on'me'as'the'movement'person.'' ' AT:'Can'you'talk'about'Anne'Bogart’s'influence'on'your'work?' ' JT:'I’m'absolutely'in'love'with'and'intellectually'impressed'with'what'they'(the'SITI' company)'employ'when'creating'work.'I'am'also'a'huge'fan'of'their'training'systems'–' Viewpoints,'Suzuki,'and'harnessing'all'that'into'composition.' ' JT:'Yes,'I'teach'Viewpoints'and'Suzuki'and'I'have'my'own'composition'class'I'actually' started'before'I'trained'with'the'SITI'company.'And'all'of'those'are'on'the'grad'level.'I' teach'Suzuki'and'Viewpoints'on'both'grad'and'undergrad.'But'it'is'a'part'of'the'required' curriculum'of'the'MFA.'And'I'love,'the'actor'in'me'loves'–'exactly'what'got'me'involved'in' the'beginning'–'the'precision,'exactness,'specificity'and'the'ability'to'repeat'with'their' technical'finesse'yet'at'the'same'time'it'is'infused'with'the'generosity'of'spirit'of'the'actor.'' ' JT:'I'think'you'would'love'their'work.'I'find'that'people'either'like'them'or'don’t.'I'find'that' those'who'are'very'harnessed'to'the'structure'it'makes'them'crazy'because'she'does'not' follow'literal'thinking'but'to'me'it'is'the'best'world'of'dance'and'theatre.'I'don’t'know'that' they'would'call'themselves'dancers'but'they'are'highly'capable'and'finessed'physical' actors.'I’m'starting'to'pull'away'from'my'capacity'to'teach'Suzuki'in'a'way'that'I'really' think'I'need'to'hand'those'reins'to'a'younger'instructor.'But'the'viewpoints.' ' JT:'Absolutely.'And'I'find'that'the'elements'are'present'in'all'of'the'arts.'It'is'how'you'come' at'it.'How'you'come'at'it'is'the'essence,'the'gold,'of'the'viewpoint'training.'And'what'I'am' loving'now'is'that'I'have'graduate'actors'and'choreographers,'directors,'and'a'playwright' in'the'class.'What'I'am'able'to'discover'and'what'I'am'able'to'witness,'we'are'truly'going' into'areas'that'you'would'never'imagine'before'because'you'are,'rather'than'generating' 25 26 ATME News thought,'you'are'responding'to'thought'generated'by'others'in'the'space.'In'the'place'that' you'could'never'have'possibly'pre[determined.' ' AT:'Do'you'teach'mime?'' ' JT:'Yes,'I'teach'Decroux'–'the'inclinations,'rotations,'transtations,'and'then'I'teach' Marceau’s'techniques'and'style'of'pantomime'and'Metamorphosa.' ' AT:'I'love'Metamorphosa.'It'was'one'of'the'things'that'has'influenced'me'in'my'work.' ' JT:'I'think'that'helped'you'and'I'to'find'our'place'not'only'with'him'but'together.'I'think' that'may'be'because'of'the'dance'background.'Because'I'understood'viscerally'and' compositionally'how'to'make'that'world'work'for'me'whereas'writing'more'narrative' illusion'pantomime'my'brain'didn’t'work'that'way.'And'that'was'really'hard'for'me.'But'the' Metamorphosa—I'understood'flow'and'transformation.' ' AT:'We'both'first'met'Thomas'Leabhart'in'2007.'What'a'nice'man.' ' JT:'Another'great'thing'that'ATME'did.'It'introduced'me'to'one'of'the'legacy'holders'of'the' art'of'mime.'Without'that'opportunity,'I'don’t'know'if'I'would'have'ever'pursued'it,'or'had' that'opportunity'to'actually'have'been'before'him,'and'seen'his'work'live'three[ dimensionally'and'be'able'to'receive'feedback'directly'from'him.'Those'opportunities'are' vitally'important'to'us.'The'fact'that'the'organization'has'made'those'opportunities'happen' is'really'remarkable'and'I'am'a'testament'to'the'value'of'it.'' And'so'what'you'just'said'is,'yeah,'that’s'what'we'do'but'it'was'really'profound'in'the' impact'that'it'can'have'because'I'didn’t'realize'that'you'hadn’t'met'Thom.'' ' JT:'No,'at'the'time'when'I'started'working'with'Marceau'there'was'a'great'divide'between' those'who'worked'with'Marceau'and'those'who'worked'with'Decroux'and'the'Decroux' technique.'At'that'time'you'either'had'to'do'one'or'the'other.'Even'though'Marceau'always' said,'“If'you'are'going'to'excel'in'my'work'you'have'got'to'start'with'Decroux.'That'has'to' be'the'start'of'your'warm[up.”'So'I'understood,'and'he'always'gave'great'respect'to' Decroux'but'I'never'heard'the'respect'coming'back'from'the'Decroux'people.'Which'was'a' perfect'reflection'of'Decroux'and'Marceau’s'relationship.'But'as'a'result'I'came'in'contact' with'very'few'people'that'were'the'lineage'holders'of'Decroux.'So'when'I'met'Thomas,'he' was'the'most'important'person'and'the'kindest'person.'Not'only'is'he'the'lineage'holder,' he'is'a'kind'soul.'It'shattered'every'expectation,'what'is'the'word,'prejudice,'that'I'held' about'people'in'that'work.'He'shattered'it.'' Three' adjudicators,'rather'than'showing'up'at'the'conference'as'they'do'today,'traveled'to'25'colleges' and' universities' to' select' the' dances' to' be' performed' on' two' festival' concerts.' Participating' 58 Spring 2013 59 schools'were'located'in'New'York,'Pennsylvania,'West'Virginia'and'Ohio.''Faculty'from'all'over'the' country'attended.'Over'500'dancers'poured'in'to'take'classes,'attend'workshops'and'perform'in' both'adjudicated'and'informal'concerts.'' ' The' success' of' this' first' festival' resulted' in' the' establishment' of' a' non[profit' corporation,' the' American'College'Dance'Festival'Association.'Between'1973'and'1979,'ACDFA'sponsored'one'or' two'conferences'each'year'for'a'total'of'14'by'the'end'of'the'decade.'With'the'generous'support'of' the' Capezio' Foundation,' additional' regions' were' developed.' ' In' 1981' the' ACDFA' Board' of' Directors' articulated' the' goal' of' having' ten' regional' conferences.' ' The' full' vision' of' ten' regional' conferences' would' not' be' realized' until' 2005.' ' ACDFA' outgrew' ten' regional' conferences' and' to' accommodate'the'growing'demand,'two'more'regions'were'established:'the'eleventh'in'2011'and' the'twelfth'in'2012.' ' The'first'National'College'Dance'Festival'took'place'in'1981'at'the'John'F.'Kennedy'Center'for'the' Performing'Arts'in'Washington,'D.C.''Thereafter,'the'National'Festivals'were'held'every'other'year.'
