he linebacker position is arguably the most difficult position on defense. Linebackers
are expected to drop back in coverage, consistently stop the run and most
importantly, relay responsibilities from coaches on the sideline to teammates on
the field.
This season the Texas Longhorn linebackers are embracing this challenge of responsibility and are determined to show they can do it all.
“Coach Diaz has been trying to change the culture in the linebacker room,” junior linebacker Jordan Hicks said. “You can definitely feel the change starting to happen. We are
good enough to play, and experienced; we just have to go out there and prove ourselves.”
Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Manny Diaz arrived at Texas in January
2011 and started working hard with a young linebacking corps. The experience those
young linebackers gained over the last two years was immense.
“It’s dramatic,” Diaz said. “They’re moving better. They can play harder, longer, faster
and they’re more agile. They make the field look small. These guys don’t just come
ready to play. All of this comes down to preparation.”
While linebackers prepare for each game, they have to be sure that they can communicate blitzes, coverages and audibles to the rest of the defense. Hicks knows that
responsibility is his.
“I’ve always prided myself in knowing every position and what everyone is supposed to
do on every play, Hicks said. “When we are out there, I’m controlling where people are supposed to go and where the call is supposed to go.”
There is depth at the linebacker position, too, as Demarco Cobbs, Peter Jinkens,
Steve Edmond, Dalton Santos and Tevin Jackson return for the 2013 season with at
least one start under their belts. Each will be able to contribute something different.
“Peter Jinkens is a high-intensity player,” Hicks said. “He’s one of those guys on the
field who is very emotional and we feed off of him. He is always playing hard, fast, physical and he will let you know. We definitely feed off all of that.”
Edmond is a junior linebacker whose offseason improvement has caught the attention
of other teammates.
“He’s an incredible athlete who works incredibly hard,” senior defensive end Jackson
Jeffcoat said of Edmond. “I made sure to push him this summer and you can see it on the
field. He is making incredible plays.”
The experience and depth at the linebacker position will provide a solid backbone
to the Longhorn defense. With their hard work having shown in the offseason, head
coach Mark Brown believes the unit and the team as a whole has what’s necessary for
a special season. Continuing to take advantage of every opportunity to prepare and get
better will be the key.
“We have told the guys that we have enough talent and we’ve played well enough at
times, but we’ve got to do it all the time. That’s what we’re talking about,” coach Brown
said. “We’re talking about a win every practice. If you come out here and you don’t have
your best practice, you’re not helping your team. They can’t not show up for every play at
practice and expect to be able to turn a switch on game day and get that done. That’s our
biggest push right now.
“We have enough players, we have good enough coaches, we have enough depth, we are
talented enough, and we are experienced enough. It’s got to be every minute of every day to
be the team that we want to be.”

2013 TEXAS LONGHORNS FOOTBALL
THIS DATE IN TEXAS FOOTBALL
– Aug. 31 , 2 0 0 3 – No. 5 Texa s 6 6 , New Mexi co State 7
The Texas Longhorns faced the New Mexico State Aggies exactly one decade
ago, with the 66-7 Longhorn victory marking head coach Mack Brown’s 50th win
at Texas. Longhorn legend Vince Young also made his college debut, Selvin Young
set a school record with a pair of special teams scores and the defense forced five
turnovers.
The Longhorns entered the game looking for their fourth straight season-opening win,
and a then opening-day record crowd of 83,093 piled into Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial
Stadium to cheer on the Longhorns.
After the two teams combined for just 35 yards of total offense in the first quarter, the
Longhorns caught fire in the second quarter, scoring on offense, defense and special teams.
After Aggies quarterback Paul Dombrowski scored on an option play, Longhorn running
back Selvin Young jetted up the sideline for a 97-yard touchdown on the ensuing kickoff to
tie the score at 7-7.
New Mexico State’s following drive came to an end after a 15-yard personal foul penalty
and the Longhorns took over at midfield. A 23-yard screen pass from quarterback Chance
Mock to wide receiver Roy Williams put the Longhorns on the Aggies’ 12. Five plays later,
running back Cedric Benson bruised in for a touchdown on a pitch to the right side.
With the special teams and offense having scored, the defense took its turn. On the third
play of New Mexico State’s next drive, UT linebacker Derrick Johnson picked off quarterback
Buck Pierce’s pass at the 47 and ran it all the way down the sideline to the end zone, giving
Texas a 21-7 advantage.
Cornerback Nathan Vasher provided the Longhorns’ next spark. Vasher picked off a Drombowski pass on the 46, giving the ball back to the offense, which drove down the field to set
up a 28-yard field goal by Dusty Mangum.
The turnovers kept coming for New Mexico State when Drombowski fumbled and Texas
recovered. No time was wasted as Mock passed to Williams for a 15-yard touchdown to give
UT a 31-7 halftime lead.
Williams scored again in the opening drive of the third quarter on a 53-yard pass from
Mock. After the kickoff, Texas cornerback Michael Huff picked off a pass and returned it 55
yards for the score, increasing the Texas lead to 45-7.
In the fourth quarter, Vince Young entered the game at quarterback and rushed four times
for 55 yards. He ended the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run, but that did not end Texas’
scoring. Selvin Young registered the last touchdown on a 39-yard punt return. He became
the first player in UT history to return both a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown in the same
season, and the only one to ever do it in the same game. Jordan Shipley had kickoff return
(vs. Oklahoma) and punt return (at Texas Tech) for touchdowns during the 2008 season.
