T
hey call themselves “ETB,” or “elite tailbacks.” Each
time one of them scores a touchdown they all come
together for their unique celebration that former
Longhorn running back Fozzy Whittaker brought to UT.
They lift their hands and put their thumbs and index fingers
together to create a diamond shape, assemble in a group
on the sideline, do their hand signal and celebrate a victory
for their crew.
It could have been any one of them running into the end
zone, but all these players want is the win, not the stats.
That’s just how things work in Texas’ talented running
back room.
Juniors Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron learned from
Whittaker and now sophomore Johnathan Gray has become
a part of the backfield brotherhood. Though a year younger,
Gray sits on top of the depth chart.
“We don’t really see it as a starting position because any
back can go in and they know that they have to execute the
plays and what they need to do to help their team win,”
Gray said.
The depth of the running backs will be vital this season
as the Longhorns are running an up-tempo offense. They
hope to add 12 to 15 more snaps a game, putting more
pressure on the backs as they will be expected to carry the
ball more and have a quicker turnaround between plays.
While Gray, Bergeron and Brown have been giving Big 12
defenses headaches for two seasons, RB/WR Daje Johnson
and quarterback-turned-running back Jalen Overstreet are
beginning to make an impact. Johnson totaled 129 rushing
and receiving yards against New Mexico State in Texas’
opener while Overstreet led the Longhorns in rushing that
game with 92 yards on nine carries.
“The weapons we have on offense, there’s a lot,” Ash
said. “Daje with his unique skill set, speed, strength, agility,
moves. Great balance…Loaded backfield. Looks like we
have four good backs now who can all play. A mature offensive line and everything. I think it’s just exciting to see all
the pieces we do have.”
While the depth at running back keeps defenses on their
toes, it also helps when it comes to injuries, which they
witnessed last Saturday night against BYU when Johnson
hurt his ankle in the first quarter and missed the rest of
the game.
When the running backs describe their group, the word
“selfless” is often used. With so much talent, the spotlight
is shared between the backs and the number of yards they
accumulate individually doesn’t always reflect their talent.
But with so many options in the backfield at offensive coordinator Major Applewhite’s disposal, they know the best
chance for a win is when they all get the ball in their hands.
“We’ve had a lot of great guys before us,” Brown said.
“We really wanted to keep that going and we know we all
can’t be 1,000 yard rushers or anything like that, but we
know we can be great as a whole and we’re always happy
for each other whoever’s in. It’s a really selfless room.”

– Sept . 1 4 , 2 0 0 2 – No. 3 Texa s 5 2 , Nor t h Carolina 21
Head coach Mack Brown returned to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the first time
in five years on Sept. 14, 2002, and No. 3 Texas cruised to a 52-21 victory
over the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Quarterback Chris Simms threw four touchdown passes while running
back Cedric Benson ran for 208 yards and two scores. Wide receiver Roy
Williams also recorded two touchdown receptions and 136 yards receiving.
Brown spent a decade at North Carolina as head coach of the Tar Heels
before coming to the University of Texas. He left North Carolina tied for
second in coaching victories with a 69-46-1 record and led the Tar Heels to
six consecutive bowl games.
Texas moved the ball with ease and jumped to a 24-point lead in the first
half with a field goal, two touchdown passes by Simms and a 4-yard
touchdown run from Benson. Benson and Simms both broke the 100-yard
mark in the first half; Benson carried the ball 21 times for 115 yards and
Simms passed for 175 yards.
Tar Heels quarterback Darian Durant found the end zone on a 27-yard
run with 17 seconds left in the second quarter, preventing a first-half
shutout. The Longhorns led 24-7 at the intermission.
North Carolina moved the ball proficiently in the second half, pulling
within 10 points twice. The Tar Heels scored on a fumble recovery in the
end zone late in the third, cutting the deficit to 24-14. Simms answered,
though, with a two-play, 45-yard drive ending in a 10-yard touchdown pass
to tight end Chad Stevens.
Early in the fourth, UNC went on an 80-yard touchdown drive to get within
10 points for a second time at 31-21. But again the Longhorns answered
with a 58-yard touchdown pass from Simms to Williams. Later in the fourth,
Benson ran for a 44-yard touchdown and Selvin Young had a 31-yard
touchdown to put the game out of reach.
The Texas offense generated 569 total yards (271 rushing/298 passing),
while the defense was disruptive as well, registering nine tackles-for-loss,
three sacks and 11 pass break ups.
