UVB Ozone Therapy
Good for Prevention and Treatment
While Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation
(UVB) Ozone Therapy is offered in very
few holistic veterinary clinics, this therapy
offers an amazing healing modality for
many diseases, for preventive health care
and can be performed on a regular basis.
HVH uses Ozone and UVB light for any
and all diseases including cancer. Ozone
is O3 (one Oxygen molecule plus one unpaired O) and as such provides the body
with much needed oxygen, detoxification,
and strengthening of the immune system.
Many disease states are in a hypoxic state
and in need of oxygen for repair and healing. Ozone can be given rectally as a gas
or it can be injected sub-cutaneously, at
acupuncture points, or directly into tumors.
The gas can also be combined with the
patient’s blood, irradiated through UVB
light and reintroduced back into the body
intravenously. Increased energy is a positive
side effect of this treatment.
UVB Ozone therapy is a great revitalizing therapy that is also an effective preventative therapy because it supports the immune system. For a healthy pet, treatments
are recommended monthly or quarterly,
and for those with an illness, treatments are
recommended weekly or every two weeks
as needed.

There are tens of millions of feral cats
in North America. One female and her
offspring can produce over 400,000 kittens
in the space of seven years—and they can
live anywhere that there is a food source.
They live at shopping centers, gas stations
and even in your neighborhood. These cats
live in groups—called colonies—ranging
anywhere from a few cats to hundreds. It
is likely that there are more cats there than
you will see. Kittens born in these colonies
learn to shy away from humans and potential dangers.
Metro Ferals, Inc., a 501 (c), (3) an allvolunteer organization established in 1997,
works to reduce the suffering of feral cats
and kittens by promoting a non-lethal alternative to the feral cat population, specifically “TNR”, Trap-Neuter-Return, in
Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern
Virginia. TNR also helps eliminate many of
the unwanted behaviors
of non-neutered cats,
including
spraying,
yowling and
fighting.
The cats are humanely trapped, neutered
and receive vaccinations. Kittens that are
young enough, are socialized and adopted
through our adoption program. Feral cats
are returned to their “home”, where they
are managed by their caretaker. We run a
low cost spay/neuter clinic for feral cats
and provide assistance to people wishing
to TNR the cats they feed and maintain.

companions together even during hospitalization. However,

not just for the

anymore.
Most people
view their pets as
family members and just as family members
leave assets to their loved ones in a Will or
Trust, so too can individuals leave assets to
their pets in a trust to provide for their care.
A Pet Trust is a way an individual can provide continuous care for their pet during
the owner’s disability and death. Without
proper planning, a pet may be left to the
whims of an informal arrangement or the

cats require a very low carbohydrate diet,
preferably raw, which may help reduce levels of certain proteins in the saliva.

de-shed treatments help remove the deposited saliva from the hair shaft. Cats tend to
lick themselves less after a blow dry, thus
reducing not only hairballs, but also allergic
symptoms in their owners.

type of shedding hair should locate a cat

cuts. Owners can donate their shaved cat

Dogs Love to Swim!
Whether it’s for recreation, rehabilitation or competition if your dog has tons
of energy; swimming is one of the most
beneficial ways to get and keep your dog
in good physical condition. It can help to
burn off some of that energy in a positive
way. Throwing a toy for the dog to retrieve
can raise the intensity level.
It is especially beneficial to teach your
dog to swim so that he/she can be water
safe. With patience, all dogs will learn to
swim and enjoy it.
Many vets and canine rehab specialists
recommend adding swimming to a conditioning and/or rehabilitation program.
Dogs that compete in water sports need
to be able to work in pools as well as natural
waters. Dock diving requires the dog to
have a level of fitness and conditioning that
enables them to do the equivalent of a high
jump, a broad jump and a long distance
bumper retrieve. In order to have the dog
compete at its peak, practice is crucial. A
pool with a competition dock is a must.
An in-ground pool can provide a properly balanced pH. Pools that use a mineral
water filtration system allow the water to be
clean and sanitary without the harsh odor
and effects of chlorinated water. The dog’s
coats remain healthy and shiny and their
skin doesn’t get dry and itchy. In addition,
they aren’t breathing in the chlorinated
odor, which can be irritating to some dogs
and people.
For dogs who are older or who have
mobility issues, steps designed specifically
for dogs allow them to enter and exit the
pool safely on their own. Unlike above
ground pools where the dogs have to climb
into them or the uneven shore lines of
ponds and rivers, dogs can swim in the in
ground pool without dealing with those
issues. There is an added benefit to having
a person in the water with them at all times
to spot them while swimming and making
sure they enter and exit safely.
Swimming is an activity that a dog can
do from the time it’s a tiny puppy to well
into its senior years. If you haven’t already
done so, please consider introducing your
dog to the joys of swimming. Both of you
will be very glad you did!

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is
the delivery of 100% oxygen under pressure. This process literally accelerates the
healing process. The use of HBOT in
veterinary practices is small, but growing
rapidly. HBOT can help treat a variety of
conditions including Cardiovascular conditions, infectious diseases, trauma wounds
and more. Carson, a fouryear-old Whippet,
got into a dogfight
with his housemate. He had multiple bite wounds
and punctures
around his neck
and right elbow.
The underside of his neck was swollen as
well as his right ear. Carson was scheduled to undergo three HBOT treatments. There was a notable decrease in swelling
and drainage after his second HBOT treatment and was able to go home that day.
Importantly, had HBOT not been available, Carson’s healing would have been
prolonged and he would have needed more
extensive surgeries, bandage changes and
possibly a feeding tube. HBOT’s ability
to deliver more concentrated oxygen decreased inflammation, promoted blood
flow, and in conjunction with certain antibiotics, decreased his risk of infection.
Thanks to HBOT, he was able to eat within
a few days of injury and overall gain a better quality of life when compared to treatment that does not include HBOT.

The Value of a Cardiologist
Sophie, an adorable Newfoundland puppy, was seven months old when she went to
her primary care veterinarian and had two
ultrasounds of the heart. The images were
sent to a telemedicine consultant for interpretation but results were inconclusive. In
the end, an evaluation by a board certified
veterinary cardiologist was recommended for a
definite diagnosis
and treatment.

loud heart murmur was identified. An echocardiogram, including color
flow and spectral Doppler studies, was
performed and Sophie was diagnosed with
severe valvular pulmonic stenosis.
What is pulmonic stenosis?
Pulmonic stenosis (PS) is a defect of
the pulmonic valve and is one of the most
common congenital heart defects in dogs.
The valve normally opens during contraction of the ventricles, allowing blood to
be pumped from the right ventricle to the
lungs. PS is a narrowing of this region (stenosis), resulting in the right ventricle having
to work harder which can cause thickening
(hypertrophy).
While patients with mild PS usually live
normal lives with few symptoms, moderate
to severe cases can result in: exercise intolerance; shortness of breath; fainting; fatal
arrhythmias; or congestive heart failure.
How is it treated?
The treatment for moderate to severe PS
is balloon valvuloplasty, a minimally invasive catheterization procedure by which a
balloon is guided by fluoroscopy across the
narrowing. The balloon is inflated under
pressure and dilates the valve, leading to
improved blood flow. This often alleviates
symptoms, improves quality of life and
prolongs survival.
What happened to Sophie?
A month later, Sophie returned to her
board certified veterinary cardiologist for
the balloon valvuloplasty procedure. Sophie’s
procedure was a
success and her
PS was reduced
from severe to
mild.
One year later,
Sophie feels great
at home. She is
active and symptom free. Her
family couldn’t be more pleased with Sophie’s progress and response to treatment.

Mobile veterinarians offer many services
that are similar if not better than a stationary clinic. Certain mobile veterinarians
drive trucks that are fully equipped with
things like a surgery suite, digital radiographs, blood machines and dental units.
Blood machines allow veterinarians to
get results quickly so diseases like diabetes
can be treated immediately. Veterinarians
can also pursue other diagnostics like radiographs if the bloodwork is normal.
On board surgical suites allow procedures like spay/neuter, mass removals and
laceration repairs to be done by a mobile

Laser Therapy for Your Pet
A LASER is a
medical device that
uses light waves to
enhance healing in
the body. There are
several types of lasers. Some devices
can be held directly
on the affected area
and in other lasers
(Class IV); the beam
of light is moved in
a sweeping motion
over the area to be
treated. The surgical laser is a device that
has a small direct beam of light that both
cuts and cauterizes tissue at the same time
which speeds up the healing process after
surgery.
Over 5,000 studies and papers produced
by researchers across the globe have documented effects of laser and light on a variety of conditions. Laser light is absorbed
into the tissue and nerve cells, increasing
their energy to repair damaged tissue.
There are many uses
of healing lasers
such as the treatment of arthritis,
post-surgical pain,
ear infections, bacterial infections and
muscle soreness, to
name a few.
Animals respond
very favorably to laser therapy and the
effects are seen soon after the treatments
are initiated in many cases. Hand-held lasers can be rented for home use so that all
pets can benefit from its healing properties.
