When You’re Going On Vacation
and Your Pets Are Staying Home...
it helps them to know clearly when you
are returning. Remember, they’re tuned
into us all the time, and they communicate by feelings, images and thoughts.
When you think vacation, they
feel the excitement, they
know they’re not going
(because your mental
picture doesn’t include
them), and have no idea
if or when you’re coming
back.
Here are some ideas to lessen their anxiety:
If they’re staying at home, visualize
yourself saying good-bye and leaving with
your suitcase. Then visualize the number
of days you’ll be gone (by, e.g., sunrises,
food bowls, windows where the top is light
and the bottom dark, etc.). Then—and this
is the key—visualize coming back into the
house, with your suitcase, and greeting
them. Also tell them who will be taking
care of them while you’re gone.
If they’re being boarded or
staying with friends, visualize
taking them where they’ll
be staying and saying
good-bye. Then tell
them the number of days
you’ll be gone, and then visualize yourself picking them up
and bringing them home.
Visualizing with clear images gets
the message across, but we are so accustomed to talking to them that adding
your voice helps to reassure both of you.

Four Tips for Responsible Renting With Pets
Moving into an apartment can be a
stressful experience—not just for you, but
also for your pet. Landlords can be reluctant to welcome pets because of previous
experiences with irresponsible owners.
However, there are things you can do to
demonstrate to a potential landlord that
welcoming pet owners is good for the community and good for business. Here are a
few tips to help make your cuddly critters
transition into their new homes.
Let the Landlord Know You Share
Their Concerns—Point out that responsible pet owners make excellent residents.
Because of the challenge of finding a
rental home that accommodates animals,
pet owners will be loyal to landlords who
welcome them.
Be Willing to Pay Extra—Understand why communities require a pet deposit and/or additional monthly rent to
guard against the possibility of loss from
damages.
Promote Your Pet and Yourself—Emphasize that the same pride you take in caring for your pet extends to taking care of
your home. Bring your pet in to meet your
landlord. A freshly groomed, well-behaved
pet demonstrates your commitment.
Present Proof That You Are Responsible—Supply documentation that your
pet has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated
and trained. Emphasize that you always
clean up after your pet and that you maintain an active flea control program.
Your pet is a member of your family and
by being a responsible owner you can have
a positive experience with your landlord
and members of your community.

Although an excellent starting point, the premier edition
began as a thinner 3-color newsprint text inside a glossy
cover. It took nearly a full year to compile the Maryland
Pet Gazette database, contact 1200+ businesses at that
time, sell advertising where possible, have client ads designed and approved. The task of laying out 56 pages
chock full of display ads, listings articles and various other
features seemed daunting at the time (but not as difficult
compared to larger directories since).
In 2003, we featured the first usable Discount Card as
an insert/cut out as well as the introduction of the Pet
Emergency InfoCard, which was appreciated by veterinarians and emergency animal hospitals. This card could be
filled out with all your pet’s vital information, which could
be presented in case of emergency.
In 2004, we went full color throughout on glossy pages
and added the “White Pages Fast Index.” Baltimore Magazine
named Maryland Pet Gazette Best Pet Resource and
that “it deserves a handy spot in every pet owner’s home.”
The downloadable online edition appeared for the first
time. Frederick County pet businesses and non-profits
added.
2005: Displayed our first time of professionally designed
cover art by an artist of Baltimore Magazine.
2006: Featured cover art by renowned artist Robert McClintock. Included winners of our first Pet Photo Contest.
2007: Cover exhibited artwork by Rebecca Pearl. Color
Coding and separation of businesses by county began in
the large categories such as Groomers, Kennels-Boarding,
Pet Sitting and Veterinarians.
2008: Cover designed by and featured the work of Art
Landerman of Pet.art. Articles and cover now featured in
a magazine format.
2009: Back to photography on the cover by Charles Smith
Photography. Links for display advertisers added to online
edition.
2010: Cover designed by and featured the art of Sara
England.

Canine Freestyle is
growing by leaps and
bounds throughout the
world! It’s a relatively
new sport, beginning
in the 1980’s in Canada
and then gaining interest
in Great Britain. It was
introduced into the US
in the 1990’s and since
then it has spread like
wild fire. There are several organizations that
offer competitions—
live and video. People
are discovering how much fun it can be
to spend time moving with their dog to
music. It builds confidence in the dog as
they develop focus and attention. Every
person and dog can do it—old, young,
handicapped. Routines are developed based
on your dog’s strengths so he/she can learn
quickly in a very positive
way. Canine Freestyle
will enhance training
in other performance
events such as obedience and agility. Both
handler and dog benefit from the physical
exercise while developing a strong bond. Once
you see it, you will be
hooked!

We all have a special dog, it’s true. But do you know
that your dog can be much more?
It all begins with a balanced training program and goes wherever you and your dog
decide to go. Maybe you think that dog
classes aren’t for you, but dog classes are
an important beginning to your relationship
with your dog. They provide a complete
experience for the two of you and help
you develop a close relationship with one
another. Depending on your interests and
your dog’s drive, classes can also bring your
dog to his full athletic potential.
The base foundation of any class series is a good puppy kindergarten or basic obedience class. They will help build a
groundwork of commands and skills while
also socializing your dog with other dogs
and humans. Classes also provide mental stimulation and help to keep your dog
from becoming bored. A benefit for you
is that you also get to talk with other dog
owners and share
experiences and
questions.
Once you have
a solid foundation of basic
commands, you
can move onward to the exciting world of dog sports,
including one of the newest additions: dog
agility. Dog agility is an exciting game that
helps you and your dog stay in shape as you
train for competitions that feature timed
races over obstacle courses. Get out there
and have fun!

The “General” is Back in Command!

discussing the benefits of FASTRACK®
Probiotics with Dr. Koelemeyer (Mountainside Veterinary Hospital, Reisterstown),
he introduced Jo Donati, who has worked
there for 25 years as veterinary technician. Jo recently rescued a boxer named
“General.”
Last year, Jo’s close friend began placing
dogs that need to be rescued on her Facebook page. A picture of “General”
appeared with his

shelter at The Darlington Humane
Society (Darlington,

be put down due to

“General” was
placed in their shuttle transport group
called “Paws to the
Rescue.” They had 3 or 4 cars moving 15
-20 dogs up the coast—which they do every
weekend. Each carrier drives several hours
relaying the dogs until they reach their new
owner.
He was 44 pounds of “skin and bones”
when they picked him up. He slowly started
gaining weight, but his range of motion was
greatly impaired. Medication complications
started to affect his liver.

What Is a House-Call Vet?
House-call veterinarians offer many conveniences that traditional animal hospitals
cannot. One of the biggest is overcoming
the fear and trauma that many animals experience when taken from their home to a
veterinary hospital. By examining your pet
in its own environment, where it is more
secure, your house-call veterinarian can
better evaluate their health, behavior and
conditions which may be aggravated by
their environment.
House-call veterinarians offer a wide array of services: from vaccines to end-of-life
care to surgery and dental cleanings. Some
house-call veterinarians own specialized
trucks which are essentially “hospitals on
wheels.” These vehicles have the capability
to do x-rays, in-house bloodwork for immediate results, and surgery.
Additionally, a house-call veterinarian
is more convenient to many owners who
are homebound, have busy schedules,
children or those who don’t want to ex-
pose their pet to other sick pets. Housecall veterinarians offer greater freedom in
scheduling appointments and work with
your schedule. They offer more personalized care than you would likely receive at a
15-minute appointment with the stationary clinic veterinarian. Many house-call
veterinarians also provide emergency care
