THE month of March comes with a sense of accomplishment, success and temporary liberty for most students.
For those who are in their last year in school, March is one
of the most memorable moments in their lives because of
graduation day. You now think of donning your graduation gown and cap and proudly wearing that graduation
ring that your parents bought for you.
This month is the perfect time for contemplation and relaxation as we observe the Lenten season and enjoy the
summer break. In this issue we will bring you to a destination that the Philippines calls one of its finest – Boracay – “A Paradise on Earth” – a
perfect summer and Lenten getaway.
Lent is a privileged time of interior pilgrimage towards Him, who is the fount of
mercy. It is a pilgrimage in which he himself accompanies us through our light from
darkness, sustaining us on our way towards the intense joy of Easter. It is the time for
us to reflect and realize how much He has bestowed upon us. During this solemn and
memorable days of Jesus sacrifice, we are honored and we give thanks for our families,
for our parents who raised us, for our partners, and our children who make us proud
each day. We thank God who made us in His image -- and redeemed us in His love.
In this light, I would like to pause and reflect upon an issue much debated today: the
truth behind the scandals and the non-stop rallies that our country is facing against the
corrupt practices in our government. We reminisce the freedom rally in Edsa, how it
affects us and the true meaning of Life as what Jesus has given to us.
As Christians, “we are not owners but rather administrators of the goods we possess,”
and we are bound to use them for the good of others as well as for our own good. All
we hope that in this season of lent is to be able to participate fully in the joy of Easter
and let us be guided by the real truth in this journey.
Life is so simple. It’s just us who make life difficult. We are all given freedom to choose
to live simply or to live in a complicated way. But then, as human beings, we tend to
want more, more, and more, to dream big, even to the point of dreaming the impossible and reaching for the unreachable star as what the popular song says.
Life is like taking a multiple choice-type of exam. We are to follow instructions carefully. We need to tick the best answer. No erasures allowed and cheating will be dealt
with accordingly.
We just couldn’t make ourselves contented with whatever we have in life and we always want to have whatever our neighbors have. We always tend to compare our life
and status with people around us. We want our life to be in full-color and not just in
black and white.
Actually any day we wish - we can discipline ourselves to change it all; we can open
the book that will open our mind to new knowledge; we can start a new activity; we
can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, next week, next month,
or even next year.
The choices are ours to make. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make
better choices beginning today. Those who are in search of the good life do not need
more answers or more time to think things over to reach better conclusions.
Don’t allow our errors in judgment, repeated every day, to lead us down the wrong
path. We must keep coming back to those basics that make the biggest difference in
how our life works out. And then we must make the very choices that will bring life,
happiness and joy into our daily lives.
Life is not a contest. Let us try to be contented with what we have, and be happy with
what we are. Let’s make life easy. Live simply, and leave it up to the Lord and as the
saying goes “Life is what we make it!”
As part of our continuous program of giving you a better reading material from the
cover to its content, we have here in this issue the Health column of Dra. Gertrude
P. Chan, a well known dermatologist in the Philippines. We also featured valentine
celebrations of our Indonesian friends, our regular columns and OFW community
events.
Congratulations to all graduates! Happy Easter and Happy reading to all.

Story
Boracay:“ParadiseonEarth”
b
y Arnold P. Grospe
A place with incomparable beauty, magical
story and is often called a “Paradise on Earth”
by many who have visited the island, I had
a chance to visit Boracay last month to relax
and dine at the restaurant owned by my good
friend Mar’s sister.
My visit to the island was already a year-long
plan as I wanted also to see it for myself to
find out if the tale of friends who had visited
the island is true. Every time I am home for a
short vacation, my friend Mar Manuel always
invites me to visit the place. Due to my busy
schedule and limited time of stay, we cannot
find the time to include the trip to our schedules. Last month, he was very insistent that we
visit the island even for a few days for me to
experience the wonders only the pristine tropical paradise can offer. To relax and unwind
before going back to Hong Kong, as he knows
how hard and heavy our work schedule here in
Hong Kong is, as he was once a fellow worker
in the former British colony being the Country
head of LBC.
We immediately made our plan, I left Hong
Kong the afternoon of 31st January for a fiveday trip to Manila. Immediately upon my arrival I proceeded to Nueva Ecija to visit my
family with my brother-in-law Nilo, who was
then on vacation from his tedious work as a
Chief mate from a Greek owned ship together
with his wife Baby. We had our lunch at my
brother’s house in Cabanatuan and dinner at
our house in San Jose City.
Coming from Nueva Ecija, we then went to
Cavite with Bro. Julius and his friend to visit
my house there and meet with my caretaker.
It was on the 3rd day of February when we set
our plan to visit the Island. Being a natural adventurer, I advised my friend Mar, if we could
go there by land using the RORO bus, for us
to experience traveling by land. He agreed
together with my brother-in-law and his wife.
We started our adventure at RORO bus terminal which is located at the back of Ali Mall
in Quezon City at 1:30 PM and arrived at
Batangas Pier at 3:30 PM. We continued our
journey via supercat ferry to Calapan, Oriental
Mindoro wherein we then continued to travel
by land via a passenger L300 van for a 3-hour
trip to Roxas, Mindoro. We arrived at Roxas
pier at about 7:00 in the evening and sustaind-
6
ed our trip after dinner
and boarded the ship
for another four-hour
trip to Caticlan.
Finally, we arrived at
Caticlan pier at about
11:30 PM and since,
there were no more
jetty boats for Boracay
at that time, we had to find a room for us to
stay awaiting for the first trip to Boracay Island
at 5:00 AM. Luckily, even if it’s quite late in
the evening, we were still lucky to have find a
room by literally knock at the door of small
hostels as they were all closed that time. We
took our midnight snack at a 24-hour convenience store and Andok’s Restaurant at the
nearby area. After that, Manoy Nilo and his
wife went back to their room to have some rest,
while me and my friend Mar had our bottle of
San Mig light while I listen to his stories about
the island. After a few bottles we went back to
our room for a short rest.
We woke up early and after having our cup
of coffee, we went back to the Caticlan Pier
for a 20-minute boat trip to the palm-studded
island of Boracay – and according to Mar it
has a white, talcum-fine beach, balmy weather, and warm, crystalline water. As we traveled along the beach we can already see from
the jetty boat the tiny, butterfly-shaped island
at the northwestern tip of Panay in Western
Visayas. The serene ambiance of the place
commands respect and this allows for true relaxation and some semblance of privacy too,
since there were no loud commotions aside
from the lapping waves and the distant drone
of the occasional motorboat, virtual quietness
is prevalent.
As we reached the shore, we took a tricycle
ride going to the DMall area where the famous
Gasthof Restaurant “the home of Boracay’s
famous ribs” managed by Mar located at the
beach front at Boracay’s Station 2. While
waiting for our breakfast at the restaurant, I
walked along the beach front and was mesmerized with its powder-like sand and to my
astonishment found out that it truly is paradise
on earth.
The best part of the island is the four-kilome-
ter White Beach hailed as the “finest beach in
the world.” The surrounding water is shallow
and the sand is finer and brighter than most
beaches in the archipelago. The White Beach
is so fine, it feels like treading on miles of baby
powder!
According to history years ago, Boracay Island
was a well-guarded secret, almost possessively
so that only a few knew of its existence.
It was only in the 70’s when, it is said, a foreign
movie crew accidentally “discovered” this island paradise. Others maintain that it was the
German traveller, Jens Peters’ book, which included rave reviews of Boracay that changed
the island’s pace from that of being a quiet secret to eventually being voted (like many other
beaches in the Asian region, such as Railay
Beach in Krabi, Thailand, to name but one) as
having the best beach in the world.
While its powder-soft white sand beaches and
clear cool waters provide the main attraction,
tourists and guests will be relieved to know that
Boracay’s allure does not end there. Modernday facilities now line the White Beach along
the west coast. There are restaurants, discos
and bars plus souvenir shops and others selling
local bric-brac and the inevitable dive shops
catering to those interested in the underwater
splendours as well as those on land.
Or for the more adventurous, Boracay also offers a wide range of water sports. During the
day we explored the 4.5-mile-long island by
riding in a tricycle from Gasthof to the famous
Fairways & Blue Water, an 18-hole championship golf course located at the mountainous
and hilly side of the island.
At 4:00 PM we went back to Gasthof restaurant’s staff house and prepared ourselves for a
swim and took some quiet time basking along
the sea under the warm sunlight while listening to the lapping of waves, watching the kite
divers and jetski riders and experiencing the
famous Boracay sunset. To add to the relaxing
mood, we ordered a bottle of beer and pork
barbeque while we were planning for our bar
hopping itineraries. Then after our swimming,
we headed back to the beach front for a very
sumptuous dinner prepared by Mar and had
a chance to taste and experience Boracay’s favorite ribs which is their specialty. True enough
the taste was really good that’s why customers
were really coming back after experiencing it
once and I also noticed that it’s not only the
food that makes the customers queue up but
also because of the location of the restaurant
and good customer service of the staff.
Later we were joined by Mr. Leo Deocadiz,
publisher of the Sun Newspaper and a good
friend of ours from Hong Kong who had just
arrived that day with his family and friends.
Leo also joined us in our bar hopping activities. Considering that we only had one night at
Boracay, we decided to maximize our time and
experienced the island’s nightlife to the max.
We walked along the seashore and looked for
a good place to drink. We passed by at the Karaoke, Disco and Resto bar where sweet music
was played and some with a rock and roll band.
It was really a night to remember as the whole
stretch of the beachfront was full of bars and
restaurants which make the shoreline more
lively and attractive. We ended up drinking at
nilalaman.
Ang mga relihiyoso ay may kaniya-kaniyang
paniniwala at doctrinang sinusunod.
Hayaan nating

music and delicious Cocomangas mixed drink
was served at the summer place.
Ah, the good life!...ended quite abruptly as
we had to get back to Manila the next day and
had to fly back to Hong Kong that afternoon.
Being exhausted with our long adventure, we
woke up at 7:00 AM and needed to rush back
to Caticlan and to Kalibo to catch our flight
back to Manila at 11:00 AM.
After arriving at the Caticlan pier and learning that the travel time from Caticlan to Kalibo
was two hours, we immediately took the passenger L300 ride and requested the driver to
drive quickly to the airport. I even acted as the
driver’s helper by opening and closing the door
once a passenger comes on board or is alighting
Maging mapagpatawad
at mapagkumbaba. Maging matulungin sa nangangailangan nating kababayan. Alalahanin natin na ang mapagmataas ay ibinababa. Ugaliin

Ituwid natin

from the van to make our trip quicker. Luckily
we arrived at the airport on time and we even
had time for breakfast with my brother-in-law
and his wife before we bid them goodbye as
they were flying back direct to Cebu.
It was my first time at Boracay and the 2-day,
1-night stay was truly not enough. I cannot
help but replay the awesome experience in my
head. I now understand why people from all
walks of life, tourist and local residents alike
are addicted on coming back to visit the Island.
Days passed and I am still thinking of my first
visit. The only option? Go back and relive
those times or maybe do even more, as I look
forward to a return trip soon.

nagawang kasalanan. Subalit gaano man kabigat

Lent: What Is It? Why Is It?
by Ms. Remely D. Valdez
The highlight of the year for Christians
is Easter, the day when our Lord rose
from the dead. Lent is a 40 days season of
preparation for Easter. Lent always begins
on a Wednesday called Ash Wednesday.
Why 40 days? Because Jesus fasted and
was tempted in the wilderness for 40 days.
Lent is our time of fasting, prayer, temptation and repentance. Lent is not required
anywhere in scriptures but it has been a
custom which Christians have practice for
most of the last two thousand years.

In many languages, the word “lent”
actually means “fast”. This is where the
custom of giving up something for Lent
originated. However, not to confuse
things, i just researched that Lent is actually 46 days rather than 40 days. Why?
Because the 40 days of Lent are supposed
to be days of fasting which means days of
discipline and self-restraint. But Sunday,
the Lord’s Day, should never be a day of
fasting but a day of celebration. So, each
Sunday we suspend our Lenten disciplines and celebrate. Lent is 40 “fasting”
days spread out over a total of 46 days beginning on Ash Wednesday.

people should be united. It is a wake-up

3. It was a time for backsliders to be restored to the faith.
In every case, it is a time for serious,

Benguet Federation Marks Its 1st
Foundation Year
by Dr. Gertrude P. Chan, FPDS
by Bernadette M. Benitez
Despite the cold breeze of the day, officers, members, visitors of Benguet Federation enjoyed their dual celebration - its first foundation and
Valentine’s day festivities.
The program was held at Tunnel Park Gloucester Rd. Causeway Bay
on February 10, 2008. Prior to the program, they had their first get
together lunch and feasted on Baguio Benguet menus like pork and
chicken adobo, curry chicken, stewed pata, pinakbet, menudo, chopsuey and many more. Because it’s winter, the group enjoyed sipping
hot coffee, others shared homemade rice wine and assorted softdrinks.
Afterwhich when everyone was full and ready, Bengfed Chairman
Mr. Geraldo Antonio and his associates started the opening program
by playing the gongs and its accessories for all the members to warn
themselves and participate in the group dancing. We called it Tayaw
and Sarong dance or the Benguet Native Dance. While everyone was

and moisturized
busy listening to the
gongs playing, other
members
prepared
their
presentations.
Benguet composed of
13 municipalities, each
made their own presentations.
The ANIBA-HK first
presented the LA – Cowboy dance, LATRIVA had their group song,
TOCWA – presented Love Darling Dance as they call it, USA had
their group Straight Dance and wore cowboy costumes, BOWA, KAPOR, KOWA, KROWC ACOH, KNOH rendered their marvelous
songs and the Bokor presented their “SAYAW NG MGA BUNTIS”.
And the last who presented was the UMWA which surprised everyone
as all chairman of the municipalities performed our impromptu search
for Mr & Mrs Valentine.
Though it was unprepared, everyone tried
our best. They had a
production number,
talent portion, question and answer and
each of them were
given a shirt for them
to design.
This is the writer’s first time to be an impromptu candidate. She found
it really challenging. It was fun and very surprising. To make it short,
the BOKOR Chairman Ms. Helena Velasco was crowned Ms. Valentine and Mr. Valentine was Mr. Geraldo Antonio KROW-C Chairman
and BengFed Chairman.
One of the questions thrown at the candidates which interested the
writer goes “Being away from your family, how can you show your love
to them?” She answered, “Very important is communication – this is
the best way to keep in touch with them. Writing. Sending them cards,
sending them messages, sms and once a week calling them. Not necessarily sending them all our salaries monthly, but we talk , communicate
with them, we love them and we cant buy love.
The V-Chairman Ms. Donnie Allan thanked all the chairmen, the
members, visitors, friends, leaders who showed support and all that
gathered, who made the foundation and valentine’s day celebration a
success. BENGFED is indeed very grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ
for its first foundation. It’s the mission is “Coming together is a Beginning, Keeping Together is Progress and Working together is Success.
The federation is inviting kababayans from Benguet to join them and
be one.
Good looking skin is thoroughly clean. This
means cleansing first thing in the morning and
again at night to remove perspiration and pollution. Beauty experts used to consider soap
and water bad for the skin, especially if they
are strongly perfumed and powerfully alkaline.
Ideally, an effective soap, whether it be in the
form of bar or liquid, washes undesirable oils
off your body but not to the point of leaving
your skin feeling dry, removing too much of
the natural moisturizer or altering your natural skin pH. If you think your skin is on the
sensitive side, prone to skin reactions, you may
consider using specially formulated cleansing bars or bath gels. Most of these are mildly
scented or unscented which cut down the risk
of developing sensitive reaction. In choosing
the right cleanser for your skin, be flexible and
be prepared to adjust your cleaning routine as
necessary. Your skin changes constantly in response to a lot of different variables: seasonal,
hormonal cycles, lifestyle, and emotions. As
an example, soap that seems just right during
a hot humid summer may be too harsh during
the cold months.
definitely affect the quality

To prevent these constant assaults on your
skin, use a moisturizer. It is worth knowing
that from late 20’s to the early 30’s the sebaceous glands, which produces the skin’s own
moisturizer, tends to become lazy. To counteract this deficiency, it advisable to apply your
moisturizer at midday, especially if you work
in a centrally air conditioned office as well as
straight after cleansing and refreshing in the
morning and evening.
Therefore, knowing your skin and establishing
a skincare regimen based on thorough
cleansing and moisturization, will go a long
way towards keeping the skin soft,
supple, and smooth.

One of the most effective way of achieving
beautiful skin all over is to eat a balanced diet.
What you eat affects every organ of the body
including the skin. Ideally we should eat 2 to
3 serving of vegetables and fruits every meal.
They help your body detoxify by adding a lot
of fibers to your diet. they also contain antioxidants which directly neutralize free radicals.
Over cooking, boiling and deep frying depletes
food of essential nutrients and antioxidants
and raise the amount of skin damaging oxidative by-products.
One of the main concerns affecting modern
people today is stress. Certain amount of stress
maybe necessary to survive and be productive.
However if it becomes constant and lead to
unhealthy level, it will surely affect the whole
body system including the skin. Besides, an
overdose of stress will activate the release of
variety of chemicals like endorphins which
will upset the body hormonal balance. It is important that you know how to deal with your
daily stress of life. Learn to relax to make you
feel better and younger looking.
Sleep is one of the best ways to naturally revitalize our system. It gives the body a chance
to repair living tissue and gives the mind the
chance to rest and recharge. It is not called
beauty sleep for nothing. Too many late nights
show up in dull skin, black circles around the
eyes and a sluggish body.

INNOCENT MONSTER
Dear Bro. Rolly,
Six months ago I transferred to a new employer after
my previous employer with whom I worked for six years
emigrated to Australia.
While I have no complaint against my new employers
(Chinese couple) who treat me kindly, my problem is
about their only child, an 8-year old boy who I find
extremely violent and naughty. I understand that in a
span of just two years they have already employed five
helpers all of whom have resigned because they could
not handle this boy whom they have branded “little
monster”. As the sixth helper, I feel that I will also follow
my predecessor’s fate.
During the first month of my employment, I noticed
right away the boy’s bad behaviour especially as only the
two of us are left in the flat all day long because both my
employers are working. Every morning I dress him up
for school, he would kick me, even spit on me and yell at
me telling me he hates me. We eat breakfast and dinner
together because his parents come home late almost every
day. He would throw food right on my chest and spill
his drinks on my dress and then yell at me with anger.
Several times he threw spoons at me and really hurt me.
When I told him, one time, I will leave because he is very
naughty he really begged me to stay and cried and cried.
I have never seen him very scared than at that moment
and I really pitied him. He promised he will behave but
after a few days he was back to “normal” again.
I have informed my employers for so many times
about their son’s behaviour but they said it is my job to
look after their son while it is their job to look for money
to pay for my salary. I am really bothered by their
carefree attitude towards their son
They are able to sit down together as a family only once
a week and yet I have not seen them talk to him nicely
and show that they care as parents. They would shout at
him and even hit him every time he makes mistake.
A few days ago, this monster boy once again kicked me
while I was dressing him up and I almost hit him back
but it’s a good thing I did not lose control of myself.
I am planning to resign as I am afraid I might hurt
him one of these days. I need your counsel as I want to
work for another employer because I have four children
who I am supporting .
Carina, Fan Ling, NT
Dear Carina,
That boy is not a monster, he is a sick child.
He has got a huge psychological problem. He
needs love, care and attention which obviously
he does not get from his parents. The syndrome
is clear - he is a sad boy wanting to get across his
message to his parents that he needs them but he
could not and so he does naughty and bad things
to send that message to get their attention.
It is common in Hong Kong to see both husband
and wife working due to high cost of living and
as a result, most of the time, parenting is left in
the hands of the domestic helper. The domestic
helper then becomes the “shock absorber” of
an “attention-starved” child like in your own
particular case.
It is abnormal for any boy of that age not to
be naughty. However he became even naughtier
because of the present circumstance. I would
counsel instead that you take the role of being a
12
mother of that boy. As you are a parent yourself
I am sure it is easy for you to understand when I
tell you that you can fill up the missing gap in that
boy’s life – a mother’s love and attention. Be his
mother for the time being. Give him a motherly
hug when he feels sad, read bed-time stories for
him, take him to the park, tell him to speak out,
play games with him, etc. Treat him like your
own son. Remember he became very scared and
begged you to stay when you threatened to leave.
That child has developed the LOVE in you, you
simply have to reciprocate it, he is just confused
and he could not express it rightly. Be patient
because LOVE is.
It is a good investment when you are able
to change the life of that child – you are assured
of re-contract in these hard times of too many
terminations.
And one thing more, that
investment will not cost you any money because
LOVE is always free.
Bro. Rolly
TO WALK OR NOT TO WOK
Dear Bro. Rolly,
By July 17, 2001 I shall have completed my 2-year
employment contract with my Chinese employer. I am
worried about the kind of release letter she will be issuing
me because of the events that have happened in the past
few months.
We find it difficult to communicate with each other
because apart from few and very limited English
words she knows, I could not understand the way she
pronounce them. There have been a lot of times when
my employer would give me certain instructions and yet
when I complied it would turn out they were not the ones
she had intended me to do.
The latest miscommunication happened during the
last week of April this year when while I was working
in the kitchen, she approached me and told me, “Gina,
you take a walk”. I was surprised why she told me that.
At first I did not move and stared at her, but when she
screamed the same instruction again, I hurriedly left and
walked towards the living room thinking that perhaps
she wanted to be alone in the kitchen or perhaps she
wanted me to take a break by letting me take a short
walk.
However she screamed again and ran towards me in
the living room with the wok on her right hand which
she said she will smash on my head. I then realized
that she wanted me to “take the wok” and not for me
to “take a walk”.
This is just one example of the
many misunderstandings we had in the past because of
communication problem.
If she issued me a bad release letter, do you think I will
still be able to transfer to a new employer?
Gina, Sau Ma Ping
Dear Gina,
Communication problem is one of the reasons
why some domestic workers do not have a good
working relationship with their employers.
When faced with this problem, the helper
would either break the contract herself or the
employer would terminate the contract using
communication problem as the reason for
such premature termination of the contract.
While some helpers are able to transfer to new
employers, some are sent back home by the
Immigration Department.
I know of so many domestic helpers who,
despite their employers’ inability to speak
English and despite their inability to speak
Cantonese, are able to maintain long-term and
harmonious relationships with their employers.
A lot of them use sign language at first to
communicate with their employers and then they
take such problem as a challenge and opportunity
for them to have the desire to learn how to speak
Cantonese, and after a while they are able to
speak the language.
It is also equally important to use one’s
COMMON SENSE when following instructions
from the employer. Relate the instruction on the
situation and on the place and time it is given by
the employer and than act accordingly and with
a common sense.
Most of the helpers I know however are
generally smart and intelligent. I am reminded
of one, who used to be a high school teacher,
and who at one time was charged by the police
of littering. One Sunday morning she went to
a park and bought a sandwich and a can of softdrink . She then pulled the aluminum tab from
the soft-drink can and placed it right beside
her on the concrete chair. A policewoman saw
what she did and approached her and charged
her of littering. She argued but naturally the
policewoman pre-vailed.
She attended the
hearing one month later and was offered a court
interpreter which she politely refused reasoning
out that she could express and defend herself.
The judge read the case filed against her and told
her, “According to police record you committed
littering by throwing a piece of rubbish on the
chair in the park”.
“Your honor”, she said, “I did not commit
littering nor did I throw a piece of rubbish on the
chair. As far as I know, throwing means lifting
something and then hurling it causing that thing
to fly into the air and landing away from you.
Your honor, the fact that I just placed the softdrink tab right beside me on the chair did not
mean that I littered.”
The judge asked, “So, then why did you not
stand up and put the tab on the nearby rubbish
bin?”
And she replied, “Your honor, my intention
was being prudent by putting the tab and the
sandwich wrapper altogether and at the same
time in the bin after I have finished eating my
sandwich.”
The case was dropped.
But you don’t have to be a teacher to be a
little bit smart when following your employer’s
instructions. You have to have common sense
though ALL THE TIME.
Regarding your question, you can transfer
to a new employer after you have completed your
2-year employment contract whether you have
a good release letter or not. But whether the
new employer will be interested to hire you is
another question. I suggest that you try your best
to impress your present employer during the last
few weeks of your stay with her so that you can
obtain a good release letter. employer.

HELLO MAMA
Nobela ni Cora P. Carsola
Ang nakaraan:
Habang nagbabakasyon
si Victor sa ‘Pinas,
nakatanggap siya ng
urgent call mula sa principal ng shipping
company na kanyang pinaglilingkuran.
Ganuon na lamang ang pagkalungkot ng
kanyang katipang si Vesta sapagkat ilang araw
pa lamang siyang nakakababa mula sa barko.
Nag-dinner ang magkatipan sa bisperas ng
pag-alis ni Victor.
Tumulak si Victor patungo sa kanyang port
of call, ang Porto di Livorno, Italy via Hong
Kong.
Umaandar na ang elisi ng helicopter at….
“Sa presto Signora. Uno de’lle e un Filipino.’
(Hurry up miss. One of the accident victims
is a Filipino.)
Hindi nakasagot si Monaliza. Hinahabol niya
ang kanyang paghinga bunga ng kanyang
pagkataranta at pagtakbo. Ngunit nagdadasal
sugatan.
Dumadaloy pa noon ang dugo mula sa
malaking sugat sa noo ni Victor. Nagkulay
pula na ang bandage na inilapat ng
isang‘second mate’ bilang pansamatalang
blood pressure.. Maputlang-maputla si Victor
at halos walang malay.
“Sir”, tawag ng nurse. “Lakasan niyo ang
inyong loob. You’ll be alright.”mga katagang
nagdulot ng moral support sa sugatang halos
walang malay.
marinero.
Caracas, Venezuela.
Isang araw habang naglululan sina Victor at
Ikalawang Kabanata:
“Attentione prego. Abiamo Signora Monaliza
Acosta per andare Porto Livorno, ill
ellecotere e pronto a partire.” (Your attention
please. Calling Miss Monaliza Acosta. Kindly
proceed to the helicopter hangar now.”
Nasa canteen si Monaliza noong mga
sandaling yon.
Pagkarinig niya sa anunsiyo, kaagad naman
siyang tumayo patungo sa ‘helipad’.
Hindi niya alam na ang misyong yon
ay aksidenteng kinabibilangan ng isang
kababayan.

Pros and Cons of Trial by Jury
My friend Joshua was called for Jury service in the
High Court but he wants to be excused from duty
saying it’s a waste of his time. I’ve been in HK
for the last 20 years but I was never called for jury
duty.
Melanie
In Hong Kong, we have the trial by jury
that is retained for serious criminal offences
such as murder, manslaughter, rape, armed
robbery, drug trafficking and some high
profile commercial fraud offences. In certain
civil cases, the accused may elect to be tried
by jury such as defamation or malicious
prosecution. In the high court, the trial
is heard by the judge of the Court of First
Instance (CFI), sitting with a jury panel of
7 people or when so required by a judge, 9
people. In other jurisdictions, the panel may
be 12. The jury panel decides based on the
facts of the case whether the defendant is
guilty as charged or not guilty. The judge will
decide on the law by giving clear directions to
the jurors, as they are not legal experts.
The Law Reform Commission of New
South Wales in its Report 48, 1986, Criminal
Procedure: The Jury in the Criminal Trial
with the principal arguments in favour of the
retention of the jury system set out below:
• A jury brings to bear on its decision a
wide diversity of experience of life, which
represents the accumulated experience of
human affairs and the collective ability
to make judgments of its individual
members.
• Since there are 7 to 9 people, it is likely
that the individual standards and values
held by the jury will be representative
of the general community. This number
of people should mean that particular
prejudices are negated by the existence of
different or alternative views within the
jury as a group.
• Because the jury deliberates as a group, it
has the advantage of collective perception,
recollection and analysis. This process
is more likely to be an effective way of
determining contested facts and issues
because each detail is explored and
subjected to scrutiny by the group rather
than by individuals.
• The jury, unlike a judge who is bound to
apply the law in a strict and technical way,
is able to base its verdict on the broad
equities in the case and is able to bring
the conscience of the community to bear
upon the merits of the case.
16
• The jury system has a practical and
symbolic function as a democratic
institution. It is the means by which the
people participate in the administration of
justice. It legitimises the criminal justice
system by providing a link between that
system and the community.
• The use of a jury of citizens drawn from
the community ensures that the legal
system does not become distinct from, or
alien to, the community.
• The use of juries keeps the criminal
justice system in step with the standards
of ordinary people and ensures that the
support of the community for the criminal
justice system is maintained.
• The jury system is a bastion against
oppressive conduct by the State either
in the making of the laws or in their
application and enforcement. By its
existence as an institution with a decisive
role to play, the jury assumes a degree, of
responsibility for the integrity and fairness
of the criminal justice system.
In sum, the jury is an effective institution for
the determination of guilt of the accused.
It has the added benefit of possessing the
ability to do justice in a particular way that
a professional judge sitting alone may not
be able to dispense. The jury system is an
important link between the community and
the criminal justice system. The participation
of ordinary people in the system validates
the administration of justice. The jury
incorporates the current moral, social,
cultural, political, economic values of the
community into the system. It ensures that
the criminal justice system meets minimum
standards of fairness and openness in its
operation and decision-making, and it
continues to be generally acceptable by the
community and the accused.
The principal arguments for the abolition of
juries in criminal trials are set out below:
• As the evidence in criminal trials has
become more complex because of the
frequent use of scientific and technical
evidence, the ability of people who are
unqualified or inexperienced in such
areas to comprehend the evidence has
either diminished or disappeared.
•
Juries increase the cost of criminal
litigation because of the time that must
be taken to allow them to absorb the
evidence and to explain the relevant law
to them.
friends International Magazine march 2008
• The length of jury trials contributes to
congestion in the criminal courts and
therefore adds to the Incidence of delay
in the disposition of criminal cases.
Inordinate delay is itself a major cause
of inefficiency in the administration of
criminal justice.
• Juries are required to make decisions
in a manner, which is not conducive
to rational verdicts since they do not
generally ask questions of the witnesses
and counsel and are not always assisted
by access to all the relevant evidence and
exhibits. This feature of the operation of
the jury system is compounded by the fact
that a jury is not required to give reasons
for its decision.
• Jurors are susceptible to strong prejudices,
which are inconsistent with the properly
impartial role of those called upon to
determine the issue of the guilt of accused
persons. In many cases this prejudice may
not be apparent, nor can it be effectively
eliminated.
• The jury system is socially and
economically disruptive because it
requires ordinary citizens to interrupt
their personal and working lives to serve
as jurors.
• In many cases juries acquit where the
evidence of guilt is overwhelming. If
this is true, it means that a criminal is
allowed to go free and is therefore a cause
of general dissatisfaction amongst those
whose role it is to bring offenders to
justice.
In the Survey of Prospective Jurors, there
is an interesting indication of the apparent
impact of jury service by comparing the rate
of support for the jury system expressed by
prospective jurors with that expressed by
people who actually served on juries.
70% of Prospective jurors believed that the
jury system benefited the community while
97.1% of people who had actually served on
juries believed that the jury system should be
retained. Overall, jury service itself generates
confidence in the value of the jury system.
While Joshua may be reluctant to serve on the
jury due to minor disruption of his schedule,
he is highly likely to agree that jury service
benefits the whole Hong Kong community
and I encourage Joshua to attend to High
Court summons.

Leaving
Your Comfort Zone (For God & Country)
by Bro. Eddie Villanueva
Nehemiah was
a man sitting as the
cupbearer to the
king of Persia. It was
a very prestigious
position at that time.
In his memoirs, he
wrote of the condition of Israel after it had
survived an exile. From there he went on a
mission to care for the affairs of Israel and his
countrymen.
Nehemiah’s accounts in the first chapter
of the book of Nehemiah tells how he felt sad
about the plight of the Israelites. He inquired
from his brothers about the conditions among
the Jews in Israel who had survived the exile,
and about Jerusalem. He learned that the exile
survivors who were left in the province were
in great distress and reproach. The wall of
Jerusalem is broken down and the gates are
burned with fire (Nehemiah 1:3).
Nehemiah wept and mourned for days,
praying and fasting before the God-of-Heaven.
He acknowledged how great and awesome
God is. How loyal He is to his covenant
and faithful to those who love him and obey
His commands. Nehemiah interceded and
repented for his sins and that of his people.
How they treated God like dirt, how they have
disobeyed Him.
Nehemiah remembered as well how God
warned them of great scattering to the four
corners of the earth should they betray Him
and of His mercy should they come back to
Him and do what He tells them. That He will
gather up all these scattered peoples from
wherever they ended up and put them back in
the place He chose to mark with His Name.
He entreated God to make him successful
as he approaches the king so he would get what
he wants from him. He wanted God to touch
the king, to grant him leave of absence so he
could return to Jerusalem and rally his people
to rebuild its walls and to institute reforms that
will bring them back as a chosen people to the
God of their forefathers.
of the ashes and fulfilling its calling from the
Lord of all nations.
and convenience, which they often seek in
exchange of their God.
So he was sent back to Jerusalem, carrying
with him letters from governors noted by the
king, securing his safe arrival at Judah and
granting approval to acquire timbers he would
use to rebuild the walls. He was even sent with
army officers and a company of horsemen.
So Nehemiah started rebuilding the walls of
Jerusalem and was able to finish it together
with the Jews his countrymen.
Nehemiah is consumed with passion to do
the things that concern God and his nation.
And he succeeded. Undoubtedly, when the
motive sides with the concerns of God, He
backs it up. It doesn’t matter if the world,
which antagonizes every thing that is good,
prevents you from doing so. You can always
expect unpleasant incidents that will try to
interfere with every good dream you might
want to pursue, for the glory of God and for
the betterment of your country.
But there were Sanballath and Tobiah
who were alarmed at what was going on. It
disturbed these foreigners who were antiIsrael, to know that someone was come to
promote the welfare of the Israelites.
From the time the building began and up
to the time that they were about to finish the
rebuilding of the walls, opposition did not
leave them. These were oppositions that were
orchestrated by Sanballath and Tobiah and the
people like them.
Nonetheless, Nehemiah strengthened
his people and carried the work unto
completion. No wonder they finished it in 52
days only. (Nehemiah 6:15). Aside from the
completed walls, he also instituted reforms
like eradicating slavery among the poor Jews.
He also led national confession of Israel’s sins
and reinstituted the observance of the laws of
Moses.
Nehemiah encountered a lot of resistance
and antagonism from the enemies of Israel.
But he did not waver. He did not mind leaving
his comfort zone for a long while and strove
for what he dreamed – that Israel will be free
from all kinds of harassment and oppression
and that they will make the true God their
God and not their fancy for false comfort
Perhaps you are bothered about what’s
going on right now. The negative circumstances
in the country and in your surroundings may
be posing some dangers which you think are
out of hand. Just trust the Lord (Proverbs 3:5).
You can hand over to Him those circumstances
that seem to be enslaving our life as a people
and nation. And like in Nehemiah’s time,
we will see with our own eyes how God will
deliver us from the hands of the enemies of
God’s wonderful plan, His grand agenda for
our nation.
Do those terrifying things limit you from
seeing what God can do in our midst? Do these
make you believe that you can’t get out of your
comfort zone because you fear its outcome
might be horrendous than what you thought?
You do not need to fear. There are those who
have overcome such thought and the negative
odds around them. And surely you can – with
God on your side crowning your efforts with
success and honoring the faith and reverence
you have given Him.
For the Lord said, “… The God of heaven
Himself will prosper us; therefore we His
servants will arise and build, but you have no
heritage or right or memorial in Jerusalem.”
Nehemiah 2:20
But he knew it won’t be easy.
Nonetheless his prayers were granted. God
must be on his side. Seems God has found a
man in him to pursue His cause for Israel.
Nehemiah may have just stayed in the
comfort zone where he was enjoying the favor
of the king. Why think of his countrymen in
Israel when he was already settled in the king’s
palace?
But he is fully acquainted with God’s
promise to Israel and how deliberately Israel
had sinned against God and His covenant. And
he cannot keep silent at what had happened to
Israel. His passion was to see Israel rising out

Balitang Showbiz

My Parents Don’t Listen To Me.
Tuwing Monday and Tuesday ay 5-6 p.m, samantalang mula Wednesday to Friday ay 4-5 p.m.
Sa Tuesday, tampok na panauhin sina January Isaac, Chi Datu, NJ Torres, Issa Litton sa topic na Love and All
That It Entails.

babagay sa show.
San Miguel at Red Horse.
May portion ding Kulang sa Himas, Nutsery Rhimes at iba pa.

Si Regine ay balitang naawat
ng management ng GMA 7 na

Kabilang sa nakipagmeeting
kay Regine ay ang president ng

Lovi Poe at Jolo Revilla:
babae.
Aifa ng Sex Bomba,
nakipagbalikan kay
JC de Vera
FRIENDS lang
kami,” ang
tahasang
sinab ni Aifa
ng Sex Bomb
nang na-meet
namin siya sa
live broadcast
ng Kung Ako Ikaw . hinggil sa
napabalitang balikan daw nila
ni JC de Vera. Pero, maraming
nakakakita raw sa ngayon sa
kanila na madalas magkasama.
Balitang dating may relasyon
. Si Yasmien naman ay inamin
sa amin may bago siyang nonshowbiz suitor.
Sobrang malihim si Yasmien sa
mangliligaw. Kahit anong identity
ay ayaw niyang sabihin. Sa tingin
niya’y pangit sa isang dalaga na
pag-usapan ang kanyang suitor or
suitors.
Basta sa ngayon ay hindi siya
nagmamadaling magkaroon ng
boyfriend kahit pa sabihing 19
years old na siya.

batch of singers ng grupong Spirit of ’67.
unique style to retro music. Hindi neophyte si Kookoo sa music
industry.
Charlie Ysmael.
Ang summer concert ng Spirit of ’67 ay magaganap sa Teatrino Promenade, Greenhills sa March 4, 11 and April
1 and 8 at 8:30 p.m. Ang concert nila’y pinamagatang Spirit of ’67: Reinvented.
Delos Santos Sr.
Foundation. For inquiries, call 401-6385,911-19-01, 894-0487 or text 0922-971-2958.
Ogie Alcasid, sobrang alaga ng GMA 7, binigyang ng
pang-apat na show, The Big Show
titulong 20-20. Ang ibig sabihin nito’y 20 years in showbiz
at 20 more in the future. Kwela ang titulo, ano?

Maureen Larrazabal;
inaming may
bagong non-showbiz
boyfriend, naging
karelasyon din niya
si Bobby Yan noon
Si Maureen Larrazabal ang isa sa
uupo sa hot seat ng Balakubak ng
Nuts Entertainment ngayong Sabado
ng gabi. Kasama niya rin ang sister
niyagn si Rein at ang magkapatid
ding sina Ehra at Michelle Madrigal.
Inamin din ni Maureen sa taping
na may karelasyon siya ngayong
non-showbiz guy. Pero, hindi pa raw
sila pakakasal.
sina Michelle at Ehra Madrigal.
matatanghal na Tarzan and Jane.
Kaya makikita mo silang naka-sexy
outfit.

Regine Velasquez, gustong maging
Betty La Feya sa local version ng
Mexican soap
leading man niya.
Talagang ayaw nilang
pakawalan si Regine.
Bago pa man bumalik ngayong Monday
(Feb.18) si Regine sa Thailand , balita nang
hindi na siya aalis ng Kapuso network.
Regine Velasquez,
gagawing Korea nobela
queen ng GMA 7, sa
kanya nakalinya ang
local version ng Korea
soap na naghit sa
Pilipinas
WALANG Regine Velasquez na nag-appear sa SOP
kahapon. Bagkus ang dumating lang ay si Ogie
Alcasid.
title.

HABANG MAY BUHAY MAY PAG ASA
Gustuhin man magsaya kalagayan ay maramot,
Niya.
Habang may buhay may pag asa,
Basta’t sa Diyos na maykapal manampalataya,
Bukas palad ika’y pakikingan Niya,

Munting anghel hitsura’y kaawa-awa,
Ngunit siya’y mapagkumbaba,isang ngiti iginawad
niya,
Ngunit bakit ngayon, iyong kinalimutan
Huag ipagkait at ibahagi biyayang iyong nakakamtan.
Ito’y isang payo aking kaibigan
Subukan mong lumingon sa iyong pinanggalingan,
Dahil biyayang iyong matatamo ay galling sa
kaitaasan
maluwat..
Pagbabalik Loob
ni Juanita D. Soreta
Sa panahong nakalipas mga suliranin’y dinanas
masalimuot,kabaluktutan ay di pinalalagpas
sa barkada’y laging bukas at nakalantaray
makamundong buhay’inalayan ng oras walang
humpay
Pusong Sugatan
niThea Estrella I Dela Cruz
Pusong sugatan kailan maghihilom?
Kapag umibig ay sadyang kaysakit masaktan,
Lahat ng pangako ay maglalaho nakalimutan,
Araw ,buwan,taon bago tuluyang malimutan.
Di alam, kaya anak tumatakas at nakipagtanan,
Ang mga magulang desisyon di malaman,
Puso at isipan mo ay pinahihirapan,
Kaysakit kaibigan pang kasintahan at pinakasalan.
Ang iba’y sila pa ang sumisira,
Upang mkaganti kayo’y paglalayuin,
Di mo man pinanahahalagahan,
Mga plano binalewala at itinangay ng kawalan,
Kaya wag kaming paibigin,paglabuan,paasahin.
O, lalaki nga naman parang ulan,
Pag huminto ay mawawala na parang dumaan,
Nawa’y ikaw at siya’y amaging masaya,
Sa diyos ang laging dalangin taong karapat-dapat,
Sa diyos na lamang ipauubaya ang lahat.
Maraming salamat saiyo ako’y may natutunan,
ni Thea Estrella I dela cruz
O, pag-ibig kay sarap damhin,
O,pag-ibig kay gandang pakinggan,
Sa bawat oras ang sarap ng pakiramdam,
Ang bawat tao ay nararanasan.
Sabi nila mahirap daw magmahal,
Puro sakripisyo,puro pasakit,
May pighati’t dalamhati.
Di maiwasan ng taong umiibig,
Sa taong tulad mong may magandang hangarin,
Want to get your
poems published?
O panginoonsa iyong kanlungan

Malayo man sa isa’t isa, ikaw at ako’y mananatili,

Father, Mother, I
In the Philippines, most kids in private
schools are forced to speak English at all
times. A kid who just came from the province
and who barely speaks the language tried his
best to do so.
One day, the kid needed to go to the bathroom so bad but he didn’t know what to tell
his teacher. He raised his hand and said,
“guro, pwede po bang pumunta nang banyo?”
(meaning, teacher may I go to the bathroom?’)
Since the boy didn’t speak English, the
teacher pretended that she didn’t hear him.
The boy said to himself, “what should I say
(in Filipino, of course)”. Then suddenly, the
boy raised his hand and said, “FATHER,
MOTHER, I”, and quickly rushed out the
door and to the bathroom.
The teacher wondered what the boy meant.
15 minutes later, the boy came back. The
teacher asked him where he went. He said
that he went to the bathroom and he needed
to go really bad. Then she asked what he
meant when he said ‘FATHER, MOTHER,
I’.
The boy then explained, “FATHER in
Filipino meant TATA, MOTHER in Filipino
meant INA and I in Filipino meant AKO”.

First timer
Bagong salta sa Manila si Ambo atfirst time
na nag-taxi. Pag-upo sa taxi ay
sampung piso agad ang unang patak ng
metro.
sapat siyang pera. Naging
dalawang piso naman ang sumunod na patak
ng metro. Napansin ng driver na
nakatayo pa rin si Ambo.
Driver: Sir, upo muna kayo at malayo pang
biyahe natin.

Aries (March 21-April 19).
Today is a 5. Information you provide
helps a great deal, so concentrate and
provide correct answers. Doing what you
promised, however, is even more important.
Taurus (April 20-May 20).
Today is a 9. Something you recently
learned from a friend helps you get much
further ahead. You have a coach who can

Valentine’s Day selalu identik dengan
kata-kata sayang, sekuntum mawar merah
dan untaian kata I love you dari pasangan
masing-masing.
mau perduli akan adanya valentine day.
Merayakan hari kasih sayang tidak harus
mengungkapkan perasaan dengan cinta
oleh tabloid Indonews, Metro Bank dan
Jollebee. Selain acara perlombaan juga diisi
penampilan dari para undangan diantaranya,
ALEXA, CK’Funky Dancer, Sekar Bumi,
Sanggar Budaya, Dixcy, NBF dan masih
banyak penampilan dari grup lain yang
datang memeriahkan acara tersebut.
Penilaian perlombaan tersebut meliputi
the best costum, production number, talent
dan fotogenic. Para peserta menunjukkan
kebolehan yang dimiliki dengan semangat
dan berusaha menjadi yang terbaik. Dewan
juri berusaha menilai dengan seksama
para peserta yang masing-masing memiliki
kemampuan yang tidak bisa diremehkan
walau mereka semua hanya berstatus
seorang pembantu.

terali dancer. Akhirnya melewati penilaian
yang melelahkan, dewan juri memutuskan
dan mengumumkan siapa yang berhak
memenangkan pemilihan miss dan tomboy
valentine. Pemenangnya adalah:
Cancer (June 22-July 22).
Today is an 8. Let someone with experience coach you in a new endeavor. You
don’t earn extra points by doing things the
hard way. Make it easy on yourself.

Ms. Jo, Ms. russel, Mr. Ball wakil dari
