ST. MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH Faith, Love, Community, Service ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ FiŌh Sunday of Lent March 22, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Monsignor John Talesfore, Pastor One Notre Dame Avenue San Mateo, CA 94402 (650) 344-7622 Phone (650) 344-4830 Fax www.stmatthew-parish.org MASSES/MISAS Daily Masses/Misas Diarias: 6:30am (except Saturday), 12:05pm Saturday/Sábado: 5:00pm, 7:00pm (Español) Sunday/Domingo: 7:00am, 8:45am (Español), 10:45am, 12:30pm, 3:00pm (Chinese in the small Chapel), 5:30pm (Español) Confession/Confesiones: Monday-Friday Lunes a Viernes 5:00pm-5:30pm in the Chapel Saturday/Sábado 11:30am-12:00noon & 4:30pm-5:00pm Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Matthew Parish, THE VEILING CROSSES AND STATUES WEEKS OF LENT OF THE LAST TWO DURING For those who have been attending mass regularly, you must have noticed that starting today (Fifth Sunday of Lent) the crucifixes and other images and statues in our Church have been covered in purple cloth. Now, why is this so? What is its significance? Well, the Fifth Sunday of Lent is the beginning of the two weeks of 'PASSIONTIDE' in the Church. The first week is known as the Passion Week and the second week which we shall begin in seven days on Palm Sunday is known as 'HOLY WEEK'. Going through the readings of the Passion Week, you'll notice the INCREASING HATRED the people had for Christ. They accused him of being a blasphemer, sorcerer, being possessed by an evil spirit and so on. The old Gospel reading for Passion Sunday (fifth Sunday of Lent) from the eighth chapter of Saint John's Gospel ends with these words: “They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.”-John 8:59. (Continued on page 2) St. Matthew Catholic Church 2 March 22, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Matthew Parish, (cont’d) According to Saint Augustine, at this moment when "Jesus hid himself," Christ in fact became invisible by virtue of His divine nature. Saint Augustine writes: He does not hide Himself in a corner of the temple, as if afraid, or running into a cottage, or turning aside behind a wall or column: but by His Divine Power making Himself invisible, He PASSED THROUGH THEIR MIDST. To help signify this mystery, Catholic statues and images are veiled with purple cloth on the evening before Passion Sunday. Jesus "hides Himself." One cross will be unveiled for Veneration (Kissing of the Crucifix) on GOOD FRIDAY. The other images and statues are unveiled on Holy Saturday. This is the moment at which the fast of Lent ends and the glory of Easter begins. This unveiling shows us that Christ has revealed himself as risen and victorious. So in Summary: The veiling of the crucifixes and statues symbolizes the fact that Christ's Divinity was hidden at the time of His Passion and death, the very essence of Passiontide. Msgr. Msgr. (John 12:24-25) We understand the meaning of this statement in that the grain of wheat must be buried and in a sense die if it is to be reborn and to grow and produce fruit. That is similar to what we should have been trying to accomplish during this holy Lenten season. The term "born again" is a popular phrase in many churches, but this rebirth is also what we strive for in our Catholic Church. We are reborn in multiple ways -- through Baptism, through our ongoing conversion, and through our daily efforts to be good stewards. Lent is, or course, the ideal time for us to seek this rebirth. Our efforts through the past several weeks should have been to bury our old self and to be reborn with a deeper sense of faith and trust in God. Easter is but two weeks away and Lent officially ends on Holy Thursday. However, it is not too late to rededicate ourselves to God-centered lives. St. John Eudes put it this way, "Let us therefore give ourselves to God with great desire to live thus, and to beg Him to destroy in us the world of sin, and to establish His life within us."
