Archdiocesan guidelines request that couples planning to
marry in the Church make an appointment to see one of
the priests at least six months prior to the wedding date.
SACRAMENT OF THE SICK:
Please call the Parish Office if someone in your family is ill
and you feel the grace and power of the Sacrament would
be helpful. This Sacrament should not be seen as only administered when there is danger of death. PLEASE, call us
if someone is in the hospital, so that we can visit the loved
one and have the community pray for them.

Dear Parishioners,
This past week, the media was awash with intense coverage of
the Boston Marathon bombing trial and its verdict and
sentencing phase. A hot topic, to be sure. The infliction of the
death penalty in this case has been a sobering reminder of our
constant need to be engaged and active participants in our
community and society. The Gospel reading from last
weekend underscored the need for us disciples to be "in the
world" but not "of the world." On a practical level, what this
means is that we are called to be intimately and passionately
involved in shaping and forming the secular world to better
announce the Good News of Salvation. What this doesn't mean
is that we simply conform ourselves to what the world is
currently thinking or "trending" on a particular issue or idea.
Rather, trusting in the enduring presence of the Risen Christ in
our midst and the constant help and inspiration of the Holy
Spirit as given to us on Pentecost, we must seek to touch the
minds and hearts of others, so that all might have a chance to
hear, understand and experience the Salvation won for us in
Christ.

Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have
been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church
does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the
only possible way of effectively defending human lives against
the unjust aggressor. If however, non-lethal means are
sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the
aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are
more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common
good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human
person. Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities
which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by
rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm -- without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself -- the cases in which the execution
of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not
practically nonexistent. (CCC 2267)
In referencing this above teaching, the Catholic Bishops of
Massachusetts have recently said the following about this latest
trial and the death penalty:
The Church’s teaching is further developing in recognition of
the inherent dignity of all life as a gift from God. As Pope
Francis has recently stated, “[The death penalty] is an
offense against the inviolability of life and the dignity of the
human person. When the death penalty is applied, it is not for a
current act of oppression, but rather for an act committed in
the past. It is also applied to persons whose current ability to
cause harm is not current, as it has been neutralized – they
are already deprived of their liberty.’’ The defendant in
this case has been neutralized and will never again have
the ability to cause harm.

amends for his sins, and dare it to be said, forgiveness from the
supreme judge of the universe? Above all things, do we want
that for him, and what circumstances would give him the best
opportunity to experience it?
Because of this, we, the Catholic Bishops of the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts, believe that society can do better than the
death penalty. As the Bishops of the United States said in their
2005 statement A Culture of Life and the Penalty of Death, “no
matter how heinous the crime, if society can protect itself
This first question, I think leads us to the second, which is what
does all of this say about ourselves? Are we a people who
must have vengeance? Do we have to do the whole "eye for an
eye, tooth for a tooth" thing, even if that is literally in the
Bible? Or do we as a society hope for more? Do we truly want
even the worst of criminals to have an opportunity to repent?
Is there something to be gained for looking beyond
punishment? Do we honor the God-given human spirit that
was so brilliantly on display in our communities after events
like 9/11 and 4/11 better by finding a way beyond the violence
and hatred that caused us to come together in strength, love and
support? What do we want our legacy in these cases to be?
More death, more violence, maybe begetting yet more
violence, or do we trust in the Holy Spirit to lead us in ways
that call us to better imitate the author of peace and life?
without ending a human life, it should do so.” We believe
these words remain true today in the face of this most
terrible crime.(from the Massachusetts Catholic Bishops
statement)
So, how do we engage our world more effectively on this issue?
I think we need to first address our own feelings and convictions
on justice. It is an emotional thing, to consider the gravity of
such expansive crimes as a terrorist bombing and the mass
casualties it inflicted on hundreds of innocent bystanders,
including children and the elderly. Only the victims, firstresponders, the legal teams and the seated-jury in this case were
privy to the worst-of-the worst details of this nightmare. Despite
graphic media accounts, most of us were spared the gruesome
images and descriptions that surely will be the focus of years of
therapy for many. But we know the basics, and we rightly recoil
with righteous anger and indignation at this horrible violation of
human life. With video evidence and the admission of the
defense team that their client did commit the acts in question,
there really was no question of his guilt. It always was a
question of what the punishment would be: death or life in
prison.
I'll finish with a few quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to
consider:
"The reason I can't follow the old eye-for-an-eye philosophy is
that it ends up leaving everyone blind."
"I have decided to love. If you are seeking the highest good, I
think you can find it through love. And the beautiful thing is
that we are moving against wrong when we are doing it,
because John was right, God is love. He who hates does not
know God, but he who has love has the key that unlocks the
door to the meaning of ultimate reality."
On a personal level, I have always found it strange that death is
looked upon as the "ultimate punishment" when compared to
life-long imprisonment. Much has been said about the potential
conditions under which Dzhokhar Tsarnaev would serve a jail
sentence, if convicted. The terms, "supermax" and "solitary
confinement" are tossed around by many without ever knowing
what it is truly like to be facing the rest of our lives in such
conditions. I wonder what really is worse: to be in these
spartan prison conditions for 10 or 15 years while scores of legal
proceedings take place, most not requiring his presence in a
courtroom, and then be released to death by means of what is
supposed to be a painless injection..., or to face the next 65 years
of hard time in such harsh conditions, knowing that the only
release you will ever have will be a moment of death at some
distant point in the future, to spend the rest of your life, such as
it is, pondering what you have done and the effects it had on
others? What is more ultimate? What is harsher? What more
fittingly addresses the crime? How would justice be better
served?
This Pentecost weekend, may we be docile to the movements
of the Holy Spirit that guide our hearts and lead us to the
ultimate life with God. And with the strength of that Spirit in
our midst, may we go and form a more just and perfect society.

Dear Parishioners & Friends,
“It unites us more firmly to Christ, the sacrament of confirmation strengthens our relationship with the Church and it
gives us a special strength from the Holy Spirit to defend the faith and confess the name of Christ.” ~Pope Francis
I was blessed with the opportunity to witness approximately 80 youth receive the gift and sacrament of
Confirmation last Sunday. Now is the challenge. There is more expected out of these young adults in our church, in
our community. Ten years of religious education classes. Their relationship is strengthened with the church, Pope
Francis says. The relationship does not end. It takes on new meaning. Let’s pray for these newly confirmed
members of our faith that they may continue to strengthen and grow their relationship through the church and
become more active members and that they defend the faith and confess the name of Christ.
My heart was extremely joyful as I witnessed two of our God and Pizza “GAP” members receive this glorious
sacrament. Over a month ago these two ladies joined our high school activity night with three other friends. What
made this even more joyful was the following day seeing them both attending the 9:00 Mass together with another
“GAP” member. They were there together without their parents bringing them. Two sophomores and a junior in
high school attending Mass because they want to be there. That is inspiration. That is hope. That is practicing your
faith. That shows the special strength from the Holy Spirit in action.

IC-Haiti would like to thank all of you for your generous support of the Fr. Marc Piché School and our parish
mission in Haiti. Your gifts are so needed and very much appreciated.
Please remember that our organization is all volunteer. Our parish provides meeting space and a mailing address,
and the church staff graciously assists with collecting donations. Members of the IC-Haiti board often pay out of
pocket for minor expenses, we maintain our own (free) website, and our talented board members provide the
expertise required to file our taxes and take care of our banking. This means that more than 98% of your donation
goes directly to Haiti! Your dollars directly support the families of PuitChacha by providing all of the operational
expenses for the school – teacher salaries, supplies, and repairs – and the daily feeding program. In years before
the feeding program, any extra funds at the end of the year were provided to the community hospital for maternal
and child health programs.
Thank you all so much. If you have not yet contributed, there is still time! Please put your donation into the redbordered envelope at the back of the church, and drop it into the collection basket at any time. And to those
families who gave me their donations at the end of the service on Mother’s Day – I cannot thank you enough. I
was absolutely stunned when I had a chance to look down and realize what I’d been handed. I offer my heartfelt
appreciation.
The Compassionate Friends of Greater Newburyport (TCF) is holding their May chapter meeting on
the 4th Monday, 5/25, as usual - but for this month only, it will be in a different place with a special memorial
activity. The IC Parish Center building will be closed - the TCF meeting will be held at the chapter leader’s
(Barbara Hopkinson) home at 64 Northern Blvd, Plum Island, Newbury — from 7:00PM - 9:00PM. Leslie Doherty,
an occupational therapist and owner of a stained glass business called Suncatchers, will join us with kits to make
stained glass hanging sun catchers in memory of our children. You can choose from various designs. The TCF
chapter will provide one kit per bereaved family at no cost; additional kits may be purchased from Leslie at $20
each. She is donating her time to help us create these lovely remembrances.

This week’s second collection supports the Catholic
Communication Campaign (CCC). CCC develops
media programming, projects and resources that
promote Gospel values. Fifty percent (50%) supports
the development and production of a wide range of
