A Legend In His Own Time...
n the beginning there was The Twan, and he was good. He showed up to the Tampa Bay Quota Clash and walked away with The Lamp and everyone’s cash. A Legend had begun. The Twan was on top of the BGA world, but unfortunately, there was only one way to go. The BGA Media immediately took to him, and The Media Darling was born. The bright lights and fast living associated with The BGA can test any man,
and The Twan was no exception. His troubles began at Super Clash I when he tried to award The Lamp to Chad Choate on the driving range. He
was still on top, but slipping. Next came The Boggs Rideser Cup. The Twan was expected to carry Elmore, but it was more than he could handle.
He was defeated by the team of Grimaldi/Cockburn, and got to spend the whole night complimenting Team Tampa on their victory. The next couple of events featured lackluster performances by The Twan. There were rampant accusations of Sandbagging, but nothing was ever proven. The
Twan was very upset about the allegations and denied them profusely. He was on the short list for the infamous BGA Invitational and was in contention when Ranger Rick ended everyone’s day. He had a second chance for The Commissioner’s Jacket at The Elvis. He battled The Commish
all day, but hit a poorly placed sprinkler head on the second playoff hole and finished second. When we next saw The Twan he was at The BGA
Championship. He was not really in contention, but used his Legendary status to convince a BGA groupie to spend the night. He spent the whole
night canoodling and talking of dreams. He did not play the next day, and Article 69.2 was born. He was called out in the Inaugural Boggs Illustrated Business Section and finished his first season on a low note. He collected a Business Boggsy for Most Putts, at the 2008 LBLDI, and headed
into the BGA Offseason. A relatively tame fall left his millions of fans wondering “What Happened?”. He came to Captain Hohnson’s Holiday
Classic with a renewed sense of purpose. The round did not go well, but his off course game was on. After hitting up North Tampa Hot Spot Chubby’s, he found himself motor boating Chesty Larue in the front seat of his car. His liver failed that night, and he woke up in his car “unsatisfied”.
Another Business Section followed and the whispers began to get louder. Was The Twan washed up? Was the first event a fluke? Twan would next
be tested at Super Clash II. The course was Waterlefe, but The Twan’s game was up to the task. He shot a blistering 87, and was in the clubhouse
with a +19 and a second Lamp within his grasp. Unfortunately, Grote had different plans. He got up and down from a shell cart path on 18 to edge
out The Twan by one point. The Twan was devastated, but was very gracious to The Media following the round. He followed that up with a less
than inspired performance at The Silver Dollar. He salvaged the day by appearing in the BGA Calendar cover photo after a particularly errant shot.
He needed a big performance to jump start his career. He received the honor of being in The Legends group at Rudy’s 3-Club Challenge. In the
presence of such outstanding human beings his game flourished. He and the rest of The Legends carved up Buffalo Creek to the tune of +41, with
only 3 clubs! The Twan once again stood at 18 with the lead, and would once again be burned. Rob Viera used his extensive experience bagging
sand to edge out The Media Darling and take home the Tri-Fecta. The Twan had been fitted for his second Bridesmaid Dress in three months, and
began to believe he was cursed. He headed Team Tank at The BRC and redeemed himself and Team Bradenton. The team accomplishment was
great, but The Twan was still missing the personal glory that comes with a BGA victory. As Season 2 came to a close The Twan was fading into the
background. He accepted an invitation to the 2009 LBLDI and hoped to use it as a springboard to his Season 3 comeback. He received his second
Business Boggsy, this time for Best Bridesmaid. The Twan laughed it off, but was steaming inside. An unfortunate food poisoning incident got
him his second career DNF, and did not help his image. The Twan was at a career low, and needed to rededicate himself to The Tour. He finished
25th and 10th in the next two events, but was named Team Bradenton Captain. El CapiTwan was born and the momentum began to build. He came
into The Manny Pacquaio Shootout uncharacteristically under the radar. He used the power of the Kangol hat along with a strong iron game to
score 7 points on the front nine, but that was just the appetizer. He shot a blistering 41 on the back and finished +5. He was E heading to the 16th
tee when his Legendary mental power took over. He parred the 16th and followed that with a bogey on 17 to go to +3. After a glorious second shot
he rolled up to 18 to discover that he was a two putt away from his second victory. After missing the birdie putt he was left with a six foot kneeknocker for the win. If he missed he would be in a playoff with Sato and Les Brown, if he made it the ballwashing would begin. He sunk the “Second Biggest Putt in BGA History”, and gave a fist pump in celebration. He once again stood at 18 with the lead. The Media asked him how he was
feeling, to which he replied: “There is still one Legend out there”. CJ missed an Eagle chip for the win, and Lonnie left a tying putt woefully short.
El CapiTwan had finally won his second event and it only took 30 months. He spent the night partying it up with Sato at The Kennedy. The Media
Darling is on top of the BGA universe again. His BRC Team is looking like The Harlem Globetrotters, The Gunslinger has made itself at home
in his bachelor pad and he even has a new signature move, the shoot from the hip. The BGA would like to salute the Legendary El CapiTwan.
“The Legends & Les”
“Very Nice! How Much?”
“The Bradenton Brass”
Boggs Illustrated was granted an exclusive interview with El CapiTwan
following his win at Bardmoor. Here is what this “Legend” had to say to the press:
How do you juggle your duties as Captain, Legend,
& Media Darling?
Juggle would insinuate a seemingly difficult task that requires
concentration. Considering I find nothing truly difficult, I’m not
comfortable answering this question. Maybe we should ask this
in a different manner. How do you so effortlessly handle being a
Captain, Legend, & Media Darling? To which I reply, next question… if you can’t do your own job as Media Czar, I’m ending this
interview.
What were you more worried about: CJ’s Eagle chip for the win
or Lonnie’s 35 ft. putt for the tie?
Let’s just say I wasn’t concerned about the BGA Pro that had 2
points on the day…. and he doesn’t have the ability to partake in
the Legendary Jump Pop.
Do you feel that The BGA has come full circle with your victory?
If by ‘come full circle’ you mean that I am the beginning and the
end, then yes.
Does your victory relieve you of your Bridesmaid duties? Who is
the top “Candidate” to replace you?
The Bridesmaid was a hat I never wore comfortably because…
well….I never had to wear it at all. In my opinion, which is the
only opinion that matters, if you are the original Lamp champion
Bridesmaid exits your vocabulary. That being said, fellow Legend
Lonnie needs to capture his first win here soon.
Any truth to the rumors that you will be hosting The 3-Club
Challenge this year?
The Media Darling does not comment on rumors, next question.
Will we see the Kangol hat in the future?
I wouldn’t want to spoil it for my millions of fans, but there is a
good chance another Kangol showing is in order.
In your opinion, how big was the par putt on 18?
If you listened very closely as my Callaway TOUR i(s) ball (one of
my sponsors) was dropping into the cup for the victory, that distant
sound of rushing water was the floodgates opening for many more
victories to come. Like I have previously mentioned, The Year of
El CapiTwan is not one to be taken lightly. You have been warned.
Last year a Captain won The Shootout, and then lost The BRC.
Will this happen again?
No, and not a concern in the least. Team Bradenton is a focused,
talented group of individuals that understands the concept of Team.
It doesn’t hurt that we can play a little golf as well, which can’t really be said for the Team to the North.
Will we see the “shoot from the hip” move in the future?
When you’re a Gunslinger like El CapiTwan, the “shoot from the
hip” moves just happens. Did any thought go into that? Of course
not. Does this become my new victory signature move? Stay
tuned.
How do you explain 4 Legends in the Top 5?
Is there really an explanation needed? The answer is in the question
highlighted by one word. You’re a seemingly bright guy, I don’t
think I need to tell you which one it is… but it starts with an L and
ends with a D.
Will we have to wait another 30 months for victory #3?
I don’t think we will have to wait another 30 days. Next question.
