Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Friday, June 13, 2008 2 The winners BEN BRIGANDI Letting the schools choose their best T he 2007-08 school year has been as successful on the statewide level as any in recent memory for Sun-Gazette area athletes. In the fall, Loyalsock’s football team reached its first state semifinal, and the Montoursville girls soccer team returned there after dispatching Loyalsock in the quarterfinals. In the winter, the area saw four state wrestling champions, a bounty as rich as any in the area. Brock Parker, Derek Reber, Luke Frey, and Dylan Alton continued a tradition as rich as anywhere in the state. Also, the Williamsport boys basketball team returned to the state playoffs for the first time in six years, and Hughesville’s boys and Loyalsock’s girls also made deep runs. The hits kept coming in the spring. Most notably, Keenan Michael broke a 20-year old hurdles record in the PIAA championships previously held by NFL wide receiver Qadry Ismail. And Loyalsock’s baseball and softball teams, and Milton’s softball team all reached their first-ever state finals. Good timing then, that the Sun-Gazette introduces the Senior Sports Awards Section, an improvement on many of the year-end sports awards we’ve done in the past. While we’ll name our own male and female athletes of the year by the end of this month, we wanted to give schools in our coverage area a chance to honor their top senior male and female athletes. Athletic directors at each school polled their coaches and chose the winners. It’s the same concept the West Branch Valley Sports Hall of Fame used with its discontinued senior sports awards dinner, but expanded into a special section across the Sun-Gazette’s entire coverage area. A thank you to all participating athletic directors and coaches who voted and helped us give some of the top graduating seniors a lasting honor. Brigandi is sports editor at The Sun-Gazette. He may be reached at [email protected]. Career highlights: I think for any athlete each game/meet/ race is a highlight. In addition to that I made it to districts in each sport every year and was captain of each team. Best athlete I played with: I have played with so many athletes but one of the best athletes is Beth Ann Schwoyer. She is only a freshman but she too will be a triathlete. She was one of our top girls in cross country, she became a strong 800 runner in track, and for swimming she went to states in backstroke and is within seconds of breaking the school record. She will be an amazing athlete in the coming years. Best athlete I played agianst: Cailtyn Cavanaugh from Danville who could run the 4x8, the mile, the 800 and the 2-mile and cross country and place first in every event. Also, the State College swim team and the Lewisburg cross country and track team. My most memorable event: This year during practice when some girls from my track team and coaches did relay races and I got to race my coach and try a 4x1 handoff. Most memorable event I saw: In swimming and track my favorite thing to watch are the relays and there have been some close relays but the one I remember was the boys 4x4 KORTNEY MAZZANTE Cross country, swimming, track CRAIG S. McKIBBEN JR/Sun-Gazette race this year at districts, it was by far the closest race I have ever seen. Top wish on sports bucket list: One to take kick boxing! And two to practice with any professional football player to see just how big, fast and strong they really are. Worst memory: Swimming districts my junior year. I was getting ready to swim the 200 IM and I worked so hard so I knew I was going to drop time and I was really excited. I remember tucking my goggles under my cap (something I don’t usually do) so they would not fall down. Well, when I dove into the water, my goggles fell down and filled with water. I could not see anything! I could not see the flags for backstroke but luckily I have been in the pool enough to tell where I was at so I could make an okay turn, then I practically ran into the wall on my breast stroke turn, and almost missed the wall on Congratulations to Williamsport Area High School Outstanding Class of 2008 Female Athlete. We are proud of you! my flip turn. Worst career injury: Luckily, I was never seriously hurt. I accidently “fell off the track” once and twisted my ankle and missed one meet. And for swimming I hurt my shoulder and could not rotate it but after a week of resting it, it was back to normal. What I’ll miss most: I will definetly miss all the friends and our laughs I can be in the worst mood but I know at the end of the day I have prac- tice and my teammates will be there to cheer me up. Favorite coach: I want to thank all my coaches, they have all been there for me, helped me and were truly a big part of my life. My “favorite coach” would have to be my dad. He is at every sporting event yelling for me no matter what.He is always pushing me to do my best and how to improve. He gives me pointers, exercises, and even talks to other coaches and stronger athletes to see what things I should focus on. No matter how I do he is there to listen to me brag or complain, but he always brings me back to reality and gets me ready for the next race. Thanks dad, I love you. Best adviced recieved: From my dad: 1. Don’t stay in your comfort zone. 2. Suck it up and run (or swim). Favorite college team: Penn State. Favorite athlete: Michael Jordan.
