ALOYSIUS GONZAGA CATHOLIC CHURCH, LEONARDTOWN, MARYLAND Scripture Corner PRAYER & WORSHIP MASS INTENTIONS this WEEK THE ERA OF THE SPIRIT The Old Testament represents the first era in salvation history. There were some outstanding personalities, such as Abraham, Moses, David, and Isaiah. Jesus highlights the second era, culminating in his death, resurrection and ascension! Today is the beginning of the third and final period in salvation history – the Period of the Spirit, the Period of the Church. The coming of the Holy Spirit reminds the reader of the coming of Yahweh on Mount Sinai: “There were peals of thunder and lightning, and a heavy cloud over the mountain, and a very loud blast of the shofar, so that all the people in the camp trembled… Now Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke, because the Lord came down upon it in fire. The smoke rose from it as though from a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled violently.” (Exodus 19: 16. 18) The coming of the Holy Spirit, the Christian Pentecost, had similar signs for the followers of our Lord: “Suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house where they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” (Acts of the Apostles 2: 2 – 4) That occurrence on Pentecost Sunday was a dramatic setting for the establishment of the coming of the Holy Spirit. It also prepared well for the beginning of the Church, which was to continue the work of Christ. Our Lord had commissioned his followers to continue his work: “Make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28: 19) At the Last Supper our Lord had promised the assistance of the Spirit: “I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.” (John 14: 16) That promise was fulfilled with the events of Pentecost Sunday, especially tongues of fire, which symbolized the presence of the Holy Spirit with the followers of our Lord. Saint Paul’s greatest concern was that every follower of Jesus have the Spirit: “Those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” (Romans 8: 14) He assures his readers that the Spirit promises final salvation: “If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Sprit that dwells in you.” (Romans 8: 11) ~Msgr. Ralph J. Kuehner, Archdiocese of Washington Tuesday, May 17: 12:15 pm Wednesday, May 18: 8:30 am Thursday, May 19: 12:15 pm Friday, May 20: 8:30am Saturday, May 21: 7:30 am 5:00 pm Sunday, May 22: 8:00 am 11:00 am Marco Cucinotta St. John I, Pope & Martyr Bob Combs & Ben Greenwell William Bernard & Mary Ida Young St. Bernardine of Siena, Priest Bernie Norris St. Christophe Magallanes, Priest, & Companions, Martyrs Steven Guy Vallandingham Pro populo The Most Holy Trinity James P. Shearer who passed away recently. May the angels lead them into paradise; may the martyrs come and welcome them to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem; and may the peace of Christ which is beyond all understanding give there families comfort and peace. Reflection for the Jubilee Year of Mercy: “For the source of our joy is ‘an endless desire to show mercy, the fruit of our own experience of the power of the Father’s infinite mercy’ (Evangelii Gaudium, 24)… This is what the Lord tells us today. A Christian finds joy in mission: Go out to people of every nation! A Christian experiences joy in following a command: Go forth and proclaim the good news! A Christian finds ever new joy in answering a call: Go forth and anoint! Jesus sends his disciples out to all nations. To every people. We too were part of all those people of two thousand years ago. Jesus did not provide a short list of who is, or is not, worthy of receiving his message and his presence. Instead, he always embraced life as he saw it.” (Pope Francis during his visit to Washington, DC, September 2015) Joyfully share God’s mercy with others. Find more at mercy.adw.org.
