MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP
MAKING CONNECTIONS
When you support STAND!, we not only connect survivors with emergency shelter, court accompaniment, and our
crisis line-we connect with families before the urgent calls to 911, before batterers lash out in anger and their
own pain, before children are exposed to the toxic stress of an abusive homelife. We’re there to prevent-and
end-family violence through education and action. When you partner with us, we connect with everyone from
children to business leaders and teach how to recognize, respond, and refer. We also equip law enforcement and
other first responders to effectively support survivors with understanding and empathy.
When we all connect, we protect ourselves and those around us; we ensure everyone lives safely in community.
Only then can we end the physical and psychological damage to survivors of all ages. Only then can we break the
devastating cycle of multi-generational family violence. Only then can we stop the profuse costs of abuse on law
enforcement, justice systems, and businesses-on our communities.
Gloria J. Sandoval, CEO
Connect with us. Together we will not only help survivors rebuild their lives after violence, but we will prevent it
from ever happening. Together we will provide hope and healing.
In the following pages you can learn about how your support has helped provide life-saving and perspectivechanging programs for the thousands of people we serve each year.
Laurie Wolkow, Board Chair

YOUR DOLLARS
STRENGTHENED
FAMILIES & COMMUNITIES
We know that our supporters trust that we will put their investments to
good use; last year, 79 percent of funds went directly to programs for family
violence survivors. In order to serve more than 10,000 people last year, 21
percent of funds were used for costs—such as rent, electricity, planning, and
fundraising—that make our life-changing work possible.
Crisis & Safety: We provided critical advocacy and supportive services
such as a safe shelter for women and children, 24-hour Crisis Line,
emergency response team, and court accompaniment and legal help.
•
Rebuilding Lives: Survivors were able to build violence-free lives with
support groups, parenting classes, counseling and therapy, transitional
housing, respite and support to relative caregivers, and treatment for
people who used violence.
•
Social Change / Community Awareness: Educational presentations,
teen dating violence prevention programs, early childhood education,
bystander programs, and parenting resources are concrete steps towards
breaking the multi-generational cycle of violence.

SURVIVORS
TO SERVICES
Daveena found
safety & accessed
vital services to
begin rebuilding
her life.
"I thought my
relationship
was normal but
STAND! helped
me see my life
could be better."
On average, a
victim attempts
to leave 7 times
before finally
leaving for good.
9,800 calls
to STAND!'s
24-hour Crisis Line
and communitybased advocates.
6,600 nights
of emergency
shelter for women
& children.
Daveena woke up in the hospital with machines and tubes connected to her body. She groggily turned to her aunt who was
sitting quietly at her bedside and together they recollected the horrific events that had happened just hours ago. Daveena’s
boyfriend had appeared at a family gathering and violently attacked her with a knife, slicing and fracturing her face. This
wasn’t the first instance of abuse. She looked closely at the business cards that the responding police officer had left for her.
Her aunt pointed to the STAND! emergency resources card, urging her to seek help.
Daveena called STAND!’s 24-Hour Crisis Line and was connected with an advocate who helped her file a restraining order,
arrange safe housing at STAND!’s emergency shelter, create a safety plan, access the Victims of Crime compensation program,
and participate in therapy and support groups.
After accessing emergency resources, Daveena set out to rebuild a new life with moral support and encouragement from
her STAND! advocate, friends, and family. Today, Daveena has a fulfilling job editing resumes and cover letters at a local
employment agency and she is happily engaged to a loving and caring fiancé. She plans to pursue a degree in Early
Childhood Education. Daveena said, “I never knew happiness could be like this. I thought my relationship was normal, but
STAND! helped me see that my life could be better.”
With advocates at 14 satellite locations and four central offices throughout Contra Costa County, STAND! is able to help
thousands of victims like Daveena access the services they need when they need them so that they can heal from trauma and
rebuild a life free of violence. Daveena now has a positive outlook for her future and is looking forward to having kids of her
own: “I am going to teach them what it is like to be treated right. I want to make sure they understand that they shouldn't
allow anyone to take their joy.”

COMMUNIT Y
PARTNERS
Collaborative
partnerships
made life-saving
resources available
to Daveena.
With a swift
& coordinated
response, agencies
can provide
enhanced support
to victims.
In the U.S.,
3 women per day
are murdered by
their partners.
2,240 people
met with a STAND!
domestic violence
liaison.
300 survivors
were referred by
law enforcement or
medical services.
STAND!’s partnership with various community agencies makes it possible to effectively serve a large population. Daveena’s
first meeting with a STAND! advocate took place at the West Contra Costa Family Justice Center (FJC). The FJC houses a variety
of agencies including police, prosecutors, social service agencies, and community organizations under one roof to make the
healing process easier and more welcoming for family violence survivors.
STAND! is a proud founding member of the FJC, which has served more than 700 people since it opened in 2011. Because of
its incredible success, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors approved expansion to Central and East county locations.
The Central location is slated to open in March 2015 in Concord’s Salvio Pacheco Square and is expected to serve hundreds of
families each year.
After discussing details of her relationship history and the dangerous abuse she endured, Daveena’s STAND! advocate referred
her to Contra Costa County’s High Risk Assessment Team. The team is a collaborative of public and private agencies that
intervene in high-lethality domestic violence cases. With a swift and coordinated response, the District Attorney’s office, local
law enforcement, Children and Family Services, and agencies like STAND! are able to minimize further violence and provide
enhanced safety and support to victims.
In September 2014, Attorney General Eric Holder announced $2.6 million in funding for four pilot programs that evaluate the
lethality risk and the potential for domestic violence-related homicides before they happen. Contra Costa County is one of
the locations across the country that was selected to lead this national effort because of current initiatives like the High Risk
Assessment Team.
“It is very exciting to be one of the few groups leading this nationwide effort. Too often we are faced with horrible tragedies
that are a result of domestic violence. By developing tools that other organizations can replicate, we will be able to save our
clients’ lives and the lives of many other victims across the country,” said STAND!’s CEO Gloria Sandoval.
By working with the Zero Tolerance for Domestic Violence Initiative, STAND! will provide leadership, expertise, and assistance
throughout the two-year process.

PRE VENTION &
AC TION
Alicia, abused
as a young teen,
now teaches
her peers about
self-respect and
dating violence.
"I tell others that
they should never
take disrespect
and that their
partner is not too
good for them."
Youth who
experience trauma
6 or more times
have 20-year
shorter life
expectancies.
1,300 youth
learned how to
have healthy
relationships.
870 children
received therapy
to heal from
family violence.
At 13 years old, Alicia was trapped by shame, fear, and an abusive boyfriend. As the only African-American student enrolled
in her middle school, Alicia was constantly insulted and bullied by her classmates. When she started dating Mark, the
discrimination subsided; however, peace in Alicia’s world was short lived.
Mark began to physically abuse Alicia and he closely tracked where she went, who she talked to, and what she did. To Alicia,
leaving did not seem like a great option—she dreaded being harassed by her schoolmates again and hoped that if she
stayed with him, they would continue to accept her.
"I knew that wasn’t the way I should be treated, but I was too embarrassed to tell anyone," recounted Alicia. "At home I’m
pretty confident and I speak my mind. I wasn’t sure if my family would have believed what was happening to me." She
endured the abuse and stayed silent for nearly two years.
When Alicia started high school in a different city, Mark still attempted to contact her even after she cut ties with him.
Eventually he left her alone, but the trauma stuck with her. At her new school, Alicia got involved with STAND!’s youth
program, which provided school-based dating violence prevention education to more than 1,300 youth last year. Alicia finally
felt safe enough to open up about her past relationship and began to rebuild her self-esteem.
Alicia has been involved with STAND! for three years facilitating group discussions to educate her peers on safe relationships
and to encourage them to appreciate themselves: "I tell others that they should never take disrespect and that their boyfriend
or girlfriend is not 'too good for them,' which is something I didn’t realize in my own relationship."
Alicia has learned through her past experience and through her work with STAND! that it is possible to have a non-violent
relationship built on respect and trust, and she is passionate about sharing this message with others. Through strong
partnerships with the West Contra Costa Unified School District and classroom teachers, STAND! is making further inroads
towards breaking the cycle of family violence. Our youth programs help young men and women heal from violent experiences
and empower them to have healthy relationships now and in the future.

SUPPORT GROUPS
Support group meetings are safe spaces for survivors to share their experiences and discuss
and learn about topics such as building self-esteem, understanding the dynamics of domestic
violence, setting boundaries and limits, and safety planning. Counselors guide the participants
in making their own contributions and in learning from the experience of others. Last year,
more than 2,300 support group sessions took place at STAND! and partner locations across
Contra Costa County.

As much as we would like to think otherwise, not all families are free of violence. Without funding, many
women and children will not have shelter and services. Those of us with resources must continue to support this
cause, every dollar helps. I would love to see the cycle broken in my lifetime! - Angie Coffee, STAND! Supporter

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND
Through volunteer power, gifts, and in-kind donations, Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church (LOPC) has provided
valuable support to STAND! for many years.
During LOPC's annual One Sunday community project day, members deep cleaned community spaces at STAND!'s
emergency shelter and stocked the kitchen with cooking supplies so moms and children can prepare meals together.
Whenever there is a need at STAND!, LOPC members are quick to rally. Last year, they hosted a splendid Mother's Day
brunch at the shelter. Volunteers provided delicious food and helped children create personalized gifts for their moms. In
addition, STAND! was selected to be the beneficiary of the Presbyterian Women's Group annual Christmas Tea event.
At other times, their youth group handmade cozy blankets and assembled toiletry kits, and members donated funds. LOPC's Seedlings Preschool provided additional
essentials in the way of furniture, cleaning supplies, and baby items. LOPC further demonstrates their robust commitment to ending violence against women and
families as pastoral staff and members of the congregation boldly speak out about how this issue plagues areas as far as the Congo and as close as Lamorinda.
STAND! is grateful to LOPC for being a dedicated, loyal, and generous partner in our work to end family violence.
