St. Pete Masters
Newsletter
Facebook phenomenon
Join the revolution.
First off, thank you to everyone who has extended such positive commendations on our new newsletter format. St. Pete
Masters is happy to be able to present a colorful and up-todate compilation of the latest events and achievements.
Inside this issue
Not only has the St. Pete Masters team transitioned to an e-newsletter,
we are expanding our presence on the internet with Facebook. In case
you didn’t realize just how important Facebook has become, a man in
Egypt recently named his newborn baby girl “Facebook” in honor of the
website’s importance as a social medium to bring together those involved in the revolution currently raging in his country. Just think of the
possibilities!

We are getting quite a turnout on our very own St. Pete Masters Facebook page with our new “coach” Pel Pelican running the commentary.
Come join the fun! There are reminders about upcoming events, comments about swim meets, the banquet, etc. and shared photos. If you
are not currently a member, go to www.facebook.com and set up an
account. You can then search for St. Pete Masters and find our page.
Just a reminder to all you readers, we are always looking for input or ideas for columns. If you’ll notice, we have two new features in this edition.
You will be able to read about your fellow teammates in the “Who’s
Who?” section as well as buff up on your triathlon pals in the “Triathlon
News” column. Please e-mail [email protected] if you are
interested in writing an article or if you have a great idea for a story.

Bob Atwood Scholarship Fund
It is never easy to say goodbye to a friend, especially
one who has been a friend for so many years. In October we had to say goodbye to our good friend, Bob
Atwood.
Even when he didn’t swim, Bob could be seen on the
pool deck, talking to people, reciting poetry, telling a
joke, sharing newspaper articles, even singing a favorite song of the moment. One of Bob’s greatest assets
was the ability to laugh at himself. At the same time,
you couldn’t help but admire a guy who, at the age of
90, was still able to ride a bicycle several miles from
his home to Weedon Island and back. Not only was he
still in great physical condition, but he spent the last
several years of his life serving as SPM treasurer.
We have established a SPM
scholarship fund in
Bob’s name to
help some of our
own swimmers
with pool fees,
coaching fees, and
meet entries. Bob
was a TEAM member and we felt this would be a wonderful way to honor him. If you wish to give a donation in Bob’s memory, you can write out a check to St.
Pete Masters, with a notation at the bottom that it is
for the Bob Atwood Scholarship Fund.
Please mail to: Sandy Steer, 201 87th Ave. N
St. Petersburg, FL 33702
Another One Hour Postal in the Books!
After much cajoling, St. Pete Masters sent in 55 individual One Hour Postal entries and 20 relay entries for the
2011 event. Results will be posted by March 12th, so look for individual and team results on www.usms.org or in
our next newsletter.
Seniors & Weights
A recent article appeared on
the website of National Public Radio (NPR). It concerned
the importance of continuing to strength train as we
age. Muscle loss in older
adults can be detrimental to
their health, as those who
do not have as much muscle
mass are more prone to, falling, injury, and may have
difficulty living independently. Check out this article in
full by copying and pasting

2011 Happenings
Spring has sprung! Warmer weather and sunshine are upon us. Get excited
and peruse what events are coming up for our team.
SPM SCY Championship Meet
April 1-3, 2011
Come join the fun and competition of the longest continuous running SCY
meet in the world! This meet promises to be one filled with great races and
camaraderie.
On pages 4-5 of this newsletter is the meet information and entry form for
this year’s 41st Annual St. Pete Masters Short Course Yards Championship
Meet. Please note entry deadline of Friday, March 25th and that there is no
online entry. You can mail your entry to: Patty Nardozzi, 6346 27th Ave N, St.
Petersburg, FL 33710. You can also leave your completed entry in the SPM
mailbox at the pool or it hand in on deck anytime until the deadline date
without a late fee.
There is a social on Saturday evening that will, again, be at Steve and Diane
Nelson’s Vinoy condo with catering by Mazzaro’s Italian Market. Beer, wine
and soft drinks are included so this is a great deal for $15.00 per person.
We are also looking for items for our swim meet raffle. If you have a business
that can donate, a connection to someone that can donate or you are willing
to go out and hunt for raffle items, please let me know. Restaurant and
attraction gift certificates and sports tickets are all appreciated.
If you are not inclined to swim in the meet and would prefer to volunteer,
please send an e-mail to Patty Nardozzi at [email protected] and let
her know when you would be available to help. Hopefully, the 50 meter pool
will be finished, and with enough entries, we can justify having the meet in
that pool.
Hurricane Man
Open Water
Swim
May 7, 2011
On pages 6-7 of this newsletter is the event information and entry form for
this year’s Hurricane Man
Open Water Swim to be
held on May 7th at Pass-AGrille Beach and the Hurricane Restaurant.
Entries are due absolutely
NO LATER THAN
THURSDAY, MAY 5TH, but
keep in mind that there is a
400 swimmer limit. Get
those entries in early to
reserve your spot.
We were close to the entry
limit last year and anticipate
full capacity at this very
popular event.
If you don’t plan on competing in this event, please
consider volunteering!

Go the Distance
2011
GTD is a self-directed program
intended to encourage Masters
swimmers to regularly exercise
and track their progress. There
is no time limit for the distance
milestones, except that they
must be achieved in the calendar year 2011. Speed does not
count - just the effort to attain
whatever goal you set for yourself.
GTD is on the honor system you track the distance you
swim. Daily, weekly, or monthly, you enter that information
into your online Fitness Log
(FLOG). When you achieve certain milestones, ranging from
50 miles through 1500 miles,
you will be recognized on the
U.S. Masters Swimming website, in the monthly enewsletter STREAMLINES, and
receive special prizes from our
new title sponsor for the event,
Nike Swim.
There is no cost to enter and
you may register through your
FLOG in the My USMS section
of the USMS website. Your
FLOG allows you to track all
your fitness activity, not just
swimming, while simultaneously participating in GTD. Once
you've entered GTD, your results are automatically included in the daily summary reports, and your milestone
awards are sent directly to you.
Chocolate Valentines Scored at SUN Masters Meet
February 12-13, 2011
Many of our St. Pete Masters swimmers received their valentine early this year. Over the
weekend of February 12 and 13 our team raced
to not only wins many of the high point awards,
but to finish second overall as a team at the
2011 SUN Masters Annual Valentine Meet.
Taking home the coveted chocolate hearts were
Eric Herman (1st) in 35-39, Carl Selles (60-64)
and Mike Torsney (80-84) both finished second
overall. For the ladies we had Jo Ann Harrelson (55-59), Barbara McNulty (50-54), and
Shannon Orrell (35-39) all finishing in first place. Dawn Clark (45-49), Sharon Steinmann (50-54), and Paula Texel (40-44) took second and Suzanne Sanchez (45-49)
placed third overall. Congratulations to all of our high point winners!
As we prepare for our meet on April 1-3, it was great to see Eric Herman in fantastic
shape swimming best times in the 100 and 400 IM’s and 50 Fly. Dawn Clark was extremely pleased with her best times in the 200 Free, 100 IM, 500 Free and 50 Fly. Also
impressive were Barbara McNulty’s best times in every event that she swam and her
comment on her 1:12.8 100 Fly was that it was the same time she swam as a 12 year
old! Paula Texel was able to best her 50 Breast, 500 Free and 100 Free times, and Suzanne Sanchez and Shannon Orrell were very happy with their times in their events
based on converted times from long/short course meters. Last, but not least, we welcomed Michael Buerkett to competition. She did great with a 1:18.2 100 Free and a
35.03 for the 50 Free. Thanks to the rest of our participants, Bob Beach, Ron Collins,
Ralph Coxhead, Bill Specht, and Sandy Steer.
Florida LMSC Banquet
15 Members of SPM were honored as 2010 Florida LMSC Champions.
Bill Specht was honored as a pool champion and he was 4th among all LMSC
members.
In distance events, Sarah Swoch was 3rd, Sarah Kwon was 5th, Sandy Steer,
was 6th, Sharon Steinmann was 7th, Jessica Knapp was 8th, and Dawn Clark
and Barbara Prescott tied for 10th.
Kern Davis was 1st in men's distance events. Carl Selles was 2nd, Bob Beach
was 3rd, Chris Burke was 4th, Ted Bradley was 5th, Pat Marzulli was 6th, and
Brian Rimel was 9th.
Leather Lung awards were presented to swimmers who completed every
event in a single venue: SCY, SCM, LCM, or postal. Dawn Clark, Sarah Swoch,
and Flavia Zappa completed every postal event in 2010 and received this
award.

SPM Annual Awards Banquet
St. Pete Masters definitely
knows how to throw a
party! Not only do we
have a “Happy Hour and a
Half”, but we throw some
costumes in just to keep
things interesting. Capitalizing on this year’s Hollywood theme was quite a
number of our team
members. Carl Selles
came dressed as Clint
Eastwood from The Good,
The Bad and The Ugly,
while wife, Kathy Selles
was hysterical as Christina
Aguilera (from her latest
stint as a Super Bowl singer) complete with the
words to the Star Spangled Banner written on her hand! Pam Geiger and husband, Glenn came as Roy Rogers
and Dale Evans. Sandy Steer was Mickey Mouse while Chris Burke and wife Tracy came with mouse ears on as
their costume. Jeff Swisher was Van Wilder while Sara Kwon came as Kat Von D. Storm Eddy was dressed as a
gangster and Patty Nardozzi was a fabulous movie star from the 30’s! Pat Marzulli was a riot as Hugh Hefner,
complete with his wife’s grandfather’s smoking jacket. Pat’s wife, Martyne, won the ladies costume contest as
Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. Winner of the men’s contest was our own Judge Bob Beach (host of the party) as
Judge Judy, complete with lipstick and wig.
During the program our volunteers were recognized and particularly our officials that were present: Charlotte
Petersen, Kevin Mooren, Charlie Kohnken, Steve Freeman and Dan Nardozzi. A few moments were dedicated to
Bob Atwood, who passed away last October to remember his athletic spirit and dedication to the team. Next the
LMSC awards that we received the previous week were presented to those present. Congratulations to all of our
Top Ten and All-Americans, who all received an embroidered long-sleeve shirt for their accomplishments!
Leaving the best for last, the Georgie Awards were presented. Patty presented all of our Atlanta nationals
attendees with the warm-up and cool-down of choice – Starbucks coffee and the ever-popular carbo-reloading
beer. Carl Selles gave Bob Aldrich, ultimate Packers fan, a cheese head to wear and Bob presented Steve Freeman
with some shark goggles to wear to his new practice group. Finally, Steve Freeman did his thing. Let’s just suffice
it to say that it was vintage Steve and Carl Selles certainly took it well!
As always, SPM closed out another season on a high note. Many, many thanks to Sandy Steer for coordinating
the banquet and all of the awards, and to her husband, Don, for the fine bartending job. We had plenty of compliments on the new caterer, Banquet Masters, and will continue to use them in the future. A huge thank you to
Bob Beach for letting us use the beautiful room at his condo, Bayfront Tower, as he does every year. The view is
always spectacular making the drinks sweeter and the company more interesting!
Thanks to all of you that took the time to participate in competition and the banquet.

Triathlon News
“16th Annual Hair of the Dog
Report” (By: Chuck & Gail Lohman)
One year ago hundreds of intrepid Mad Dogs braved the
rain, wind and cold to perpetuate one of our most sacred
traditions - the Hair of the Dog
Triathlon on New Year’s Day.
Oh, the difference a year
makes – clear skies, temperature in the 70ʼs. Now that’s the
Florida we know and love!
Of course the Hawk showed
up, but what would Ft. DeSoto
be without a 20 MPH wind
blowing? In the interests of
complete disclosure, the lagoon temperature was also in
the 50ʼs. Anyone with a slight
hangover from the previous
evenings celebrations was instantly awake after taking the
plunge.
As usual, Rue Morgan (MD #1)
led the charge, as part of his
preparation for the Annual
Disney Marathon. As we all
know, the pre-party triathlon is
advertised as an untimed and
unrecorded event. Most participants competed in this spirit.
However, once the competition
begins, an interesting phenomenon always takes place.
Sometimes it’s precipitated by
a sideways glance, sometimes
itʼs a joke exchanged, sometimes itʼs an innocent and courteous bike pass, perhaps itʼs a
result of six weeks hibernation
from the last triathlon. Whatever the cause, suddenly the
game is on! We only hope it’s
not contagious.
Any St. Pete Masters swimmers
considering “trying” a triathlon
might want to consider this low
pressure, triathlon/party next
New Year’s Day!

Who’s Who: Sharon Steinmann
Sharon started swimming
at the age of 12 in Atlanta, GA after her pediatrician recommended
sports to help her sleep.
Initially swimming for the
Atlanta Swim Association,
Sharon also swam in high
school for Westminster Academy. Once her family
moved to St. Louis, MO, Sharon started swimming club
for both Clayton Shaw Park and Sugar Creek Sports Club.
She competed in high school swimming for Ladue High
School. Here, Sharon helped lead her high school team
to first place at the Missouri State Championships in
1976 by winning two individual events! Having a successful high school career, Sharon received a partial
scholarship to swim at University of Florida as a Lady
Gator under Randy Reese. Burnout took its toll and Sharon left the sport after a year and a half. As many excollege swimmers do, Sharon stayed away from the
sport for many years. It was not until she was 35, while
living in the San Francisco Bay Area, did Sharon began to
turn back to swimming for exercise. She joined Tamalpais Masters in San Rafael, CA and later swam for
Rolling Hills Mudsharks in Novato, CA. This is where she
gained her love of open water swims after years of pool
swimming. In 2004, Sharon moved to the Tampa Bay
Area and joined SPM after meeting several of their
swimmers at an open water swim. Now, she is a satellite
swimmer training on her own with Tony Drain and a rotating cast of others at SW Pool in Largo. They usually
tackle workouts off the Sarasota Y or Indy Fit websites
but if Sharon trained at Northshore, she says she would
be in the Stroke Group, though she fast enough to be a
Shark! Sharon tags her fondest memory in Master’s
swimming as last year’s trip to the USMS Short Course
Nationals in Atlanta. She was able to go back to her
childhood home and compete in the 1996 Olympic
Games pool. Aside from swimming, Sharon owns a
clothing company called Shaybali. She does product
development, manufacturing, and importing for major
women’s mail order catalogs. She is also an avid gardener and loves to paint.
Who’s Who: Suzanne Sanchez
Suzanne started swimming at the age of 7, when her family lived in Winter Park, Florida, as a summer activity. She
was instantly hooked! The next year, Suzanne and her
family relocated to St. Petersburg. Her parents purchased
a home close to Northwest Recreation Center and Pool so
she joined the summer swim league program there and
continued to swim year round with the St. Petersburg Recreation Department after that. Under the coaching of
Harry Tillette, she practiced twice a day at Northshore
Pool. Suzanne loved swimming and became a very dedicated competitive swimmer at this point. Training fulltime, she actually broke the JO and State record at
Northshore pool during long course JO’s in the 50 back by
beating the top seeded swimmer, whom she never
thought she could outswim. This still serves as one of her
most memorable swimming moments. She even was given a big trophy at the banquet by Bobby Bowden! She
continued her success while swimming for St. Pete Catholic High School all four years, qualifying for the
11
Florida High School State
meet every year. During her
junior year of high school,
Suzanne was receiving some
college interest, but suffered
from burn out and decided
to quit swimming after senior year. Suzanne says that this is “the biggest regret of
my life”! Staying away from the sport for some time, Suzanne recently joined SPM about a year ago to meet new
people, exercise and because she still does love to swim.
She currently trains with the Stroke group but is working
hard to one day infiltrate the Sharks. Suzanne is training
daily and competing more in order to obtain qualifying
times for Nationals. She currently works as a paralegal at
the law firm of Englander and Fischer, LLP. Aside from
swimming, Suzanne enjoys running, going to the beach,
doing anything outdoors and spending time with her four
children and three dogs.
The Keys to Dealing with Upper Cross
Syndrome
By Dr. Matt Fontaine
Most people recognize that they have poor posture, or at least that they could use
some improvement to their posture. But just how much of an impact does posture
have on us? The answer is that over time, poor posture can result in tight muscles,
undue joint stress, pain, and poor athletic performance.
Dr. Vladimir Janda described two postural syndromes known as the lower crossed syndrome and the upper
crossed syndrome. In this article we will be dealing with the upper crossed syndrome, what it is, and corrective
strategies to deal with it. Upper cross syndrome is as common as dirt, affecting nearly everyone on some level.
For swimmers, it can be especially problematic, leading to shoulder impingement, neck pain, thoracic outlet syndrome and a host of other conditions due to repetitive stress.
Upper Cross Syndrome describes a compromise in the musculoskeletal system which tightens or facilitates the anterior compartment of the “upper” torso while at the same time weakening the
posterior.
The real problem with upper cross syndrome is that because of all
the time we spend bent over a computer, workspace, driving,
brushing our teeth etc., our body typically looses mobility in the
upper back (thoracic spine). Our head gets drawn forward, the
pectorals become tight and overactive, and we become more
“hunched over”. As the head comes to sit in a forward direction,
the muscles in the back of the neck and head have to work overtime to attempt to bring the head back over the shoulders. This
resultant increased muscle tightness results in compression of the
cervical spine, particularly the lower cervical spine. This can lead
to joint dysfunction, pain, headaches, and early degeneration.
The other major component is decreased thoracic mobility. As we lose mobility to our mid and upper back, our
neck has more stress placed upon it. Corrective exercise strategies aimed at restoring thoracic mobility is essential. Along with improved mobility, we also need to address the weakness of the mid back muscles, particularly
the mid and lower trapezius, serratus anterior, and even the deep neck flexors in front of the spine.
Many people, including athletes may even require soft tissue work, like Active Release Techniques® to release
soft tissue adhesions, and manipulation to restore normal joint motion. These treatments are usually accompanied by corrective exercise rehabilitation and functional training.
