Jesus said to Simon
FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME † FEBRUARY 7, 2016 Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him. ~ Luke 5:10-11 2926 Beaver Avenue Des Moines, IA 50310 515.255.3162 www.holytrinitydm.org www.htschool.org Parish email: parishoffi[email protected] School email: [email protected] DERBY GALA WISH LIST HaveyouwantedtodonatetotheGalabutnotsurewhatisneededorwanted? We are now well into the Galilean ministry of Jesus, the one he began in the Nazareth synagogue. This Sunday contains a surprise development. The Fifth Sunday finds three of the greatest witnesses in the Bible—Isaiah, Paul and Peter—expressing their own worthlessness. What is your attitude toward worthiness? Do you agree with today’s psychologized sentiment that, “I am worthy,” or “I’m ok, you’re ok,” or “I buy this product because I’m worth it”? Let’s look at these three witnesses and see about their worthiness. What is the Lord’s reaction to them? Isaiah first. He receives a vision of heaven (First Reading), surely a sign of worth. In it the Lord is seated on a high and lofty throne. A Seraphim angel choir is crying out, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!”* Isaiah reacts to the paradox. Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! Then an angel swoops down, carrying a burning coal! To cleanse Isaiah’s lips!!!! He is doomed alright, but his “doom” is to be made clean through suffering. To be made able to speak of God. Second, St. Paul says that Christ appeared to him last of all, as to one born abnormally (Second Reading). “For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.” Unworthy, but did the grace of God discard him? No, it appointed him an Apostle even though he had never even met Jesus. Third, there is the famous Gospel story. Jesus tells Peter, James and John to fish in the deep water (where they had been fishing and fishing all night with no result). Without warning their nets are bloated with fish. Peter cries out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” So we have a problem here. Isn’t the experience of God supposed to lead to peace, forgiveness, and joy instead of shame? Make a distinction. The real reaction of all three figures is not really shame, which means concluding that they are each ugly and sinful, but instead it is a kind of humility, a finding their of their true place in reality. Look at it. Each of these men is forced to compare himself directly with the presence of God. When people meet the holiness of God head-on, they are able to see humanness in themselves—as full of holes as a sponge. They could never pretend that they shone like the stars because they saw the real star bursting with light. Experience of God lets us understand that we are far, far less than God. This is not bad. Our own elegance cannot make us holy but God’s can. At Mass we echo the Roman centurion: “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” The answer is, therefore, we can be proud to be unworthy if reception of God’s love is the result. Whenever we react with shame, God does not say in return, “I reject you,” but “I love you dearly. Come be with me, you fine human being.” *This vision happened “in the year King Uzziah died.” According to biblica records Uzziah reigned for 52 years (c. 791-739 BC), but Assyrian records indicate that he reigned for 42 years (c. 783-742). In any case, his latter years were stricken with what the Bible understood as leprosy and therefore he could not rule or worship with others. Fr. John Foley, S. Ubald There will be a Mass of Healing on Thursday, Feb. 11th at 6:00 p.m. at St Pius X Catholic Church at 3663 66th in Urbandale celebrated by Fr. Ubald Rugirangoga from the Diocese of Cyangugu, Rwanda. During the 1994 genocide Fr. Ubald lost over 80 members of his family and over 45,000 of his parishioners were exterminated. He escaped through the Congo on foot in the middle of the night. When he left Rwanda at that time he made a promise to his Bishop that he would return to bring healing to his people. Fr. Ubald has an amazing healing gift and his focus is on healing, forgiveness and evangelization wherever he goes. The Government of Rwanda seeks him out for advice on forgiveness and reconciliation as the country continues to rebuild after the devastation of the genocide. He continues to preach healing in Rwanda, the Congo and Burundi where it is not uncommon for crowds up to 10-80,000 will come. He has traveled all over Europe, the Holy Land and other parts of Africa. He made his first trip to the United States in 2009, at the request of Immaculée Ilibagiza, author of “Left to Tell,” another genocide survivor, who currently resides in the U.S. You may learn more about Fr. Ubald and his work by going to www.frubald.com. So please come, bring a friend, and tell others to join us for this special Mass of Healing. Fr. Ubald will also say to come and pray for others who cannot be there to pray for healing. Jesus is not limited to time and space. We look forward to seeing you there. SAINT OF THE WEEK & DIOCESAN NOTES Apollonia, Virgin and Martyr died 249 St. Dionysius wrote an account of the heavy persecution of Christians by the pagan populace in the city of Alexandria in the last year of the reign of the Emperor Philip. An enraged mob killed several older Christians who would not blaspheme God or worship the false gods. Many other Christians fled the city, leaving all of their possessions behind rather than renounce their faith. St. Dionysius noted that he knew of none who yielded to the pressure. Among the Christians martyred at this time was Apollonia, a deaconess. The pagans first beat her severely, knocking all of the teeth out of her head. Then, dragging her out of the city, they lit a great fire and threatened to throw her into it unless she blasphemed God. Apollonia asked for a moment’s delay which, interpreted by the pagans as a sign that she was considering it, was granted. When she was freed, Apollonia threw herself onto the flames. While we, as Christians, believe it a sin to hasten one’s own death, St. Augustine was of the opinion that Apollonia was guided by the Holy Spirit in her action. St. Apollonia, the patron saint of dentists, is invoked against toothache and all dental diseases. In ancient art, she is often depicted holding a tooth in a pair of pincers or with a golden tooth hung from a necklace. While this saint is no longer listed on the universal calendar of the Church, she is honored by dentists and others on February 9th. Apollonia’s message today: Standing up for one’s faith is easy only if that faith is strong. Faith will remain strong only if we ask God to give us the strength we need to face the many obstacles and temptations which cross our paths. When times of trial occur in your life, do you turn first to God for help?
