Dr. Abubaker A. Ali (General Surgery Resident) will be moving to Florida to
further his specialty by doing a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the
University of Florida.
Dr. Christopher Alpendre (Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellow) will be joining a
private practice group of general surgeons in Tampa, Florida. He will be the 7th
surgeon helping with coverage of three busy hospitals: Tampa Memorial, Brandon
Memorial, and St. Joseph South.

Dr. Alfred A. Baylor (Surgical Critical Care Fellow) will be returning to the
DMC and the WSU School of Medicine as a staff surgeon and Assistant Professor
and will resume coordinating medical students at the DMC, Director of Hyperbarics and Wound Care, after Dr. Wilson retires, and other opportunities that arise.
Dr. Jennifer L. Bradley (General Surgery Resident) will be joining a private
practice group in Muskegon, Michigan and will be performing general surgery.
Dr. Muhammad Umar Butt (General Surgery Resident) will be pursuing a
hepatobiliary, pancreatic and upper gastrointestinal (stomach, esophagus) Minimally Invasive Fellowship at the Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas. On average, 60-70 applicants apply for 16 spots in HPB around the country. Dr. Butt has
started working on five research projects and will be attending the AHPBA Meeting in Sao
Paulo, Brazil, in 2016.
Dr. Leila J. Green (General Surgery Resident) will be doing a one-year Critical
Care Fellowship at UT Southwestern/Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. DeLorean Q. Griffin (Plastic Surgery Resident) will be starting a plastic surgery position at the St. Mary Mercy Medical Center in Livonia, Michigan, in July.

Dr. Brandt D. Jones (Vascular Surgery Fellow) will be joining the Vein and Vascular Institute of
Tampa Bay as a Vascular Surgeon in Tampa, Florida, on July 1.
Dr. Roozbeh Mansour (General Surgery Resident) will be doing a Minimally Invasive Surgery/Bariatric
Fellowship in Greenville, South Carolina.
Dr. Grace A. Nicksa (Senior Pediatric Surgery Fellow) will be going to Santa Clara, California, and will
be practicing pediatric surgery and teaching residents and medical students from two academic facilities.
Dr. Rachael T. Springer (General Surgery Resident) will be going to the Lawnwood Regional Medical
Center in Fort Pierce, Florida. This is a Level II trauma center, and she will be joining a group of six
surgeons doing acute care surgery.
Dr. Hue C. Thai (Vascular Surgery Fellow) will be going to the Treasure Coast region of Florida to join
a small vascular surgery practice group there.
Dr. William Truong (General Surgery Resident) will be completing a Bariatric Fellowship at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO.
Dr. Michelle A. Veenstra (Pediatric Surgical Critical Care Fellow) will be returning to finish her last two
years of her general surgical residency at the William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and will be applying for a Pediatric Surgery Fellowship this coming year.
Dr. Daniel J. Watkins (General Surgery Resident) will be starting a Fellowship in Pediatric General Surgery at the Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr. Danielle C. Welch (General Surgery Resident) will be going to work at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn and will be working with Dr. Thomas Siegel in private practice.
Dr. Kristoffer R. Wong (Surgical Critical Care Fellow) will begin a Trauma Surgery Fellowship at the Hurley
Medical Center in Flint, Michigan.

Visits Our Department of Surgery
Professor Laureate zur Hausen, who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2008 was a guest of the Department of Surgery
on June 9-10, 2015. Dr. Donald Weaver (WSUGS 1979) had a reception for Professor Hausen on Tuesday evening ( June 9) at
Orchestra Hall. This reception was very well attended by faculty, residents, and guests from other departments. During the
reception, Dean Jack Sobel, MD welcomed Professor Hausen to the reception and a good time was had by all.

Visits Our Department of Surgery
Professor Hauser gave an outstanding lecture on the influence of different infectious
agents in the development of cancer. He pointed out that infectious agents that lead to human cancer are usually viral in origin. Professor Hauser also emphasized the potential danger of bovine meat and milk as it relates to high incidence, worldwide, of colon cancer and
breast cancer. He identified various molecular factors which can be identified and support
this as being a cause and effect relationship. He also emphasized that bovine meat and milk

Dr. Christina Busuito (WSUPS 2016) and her husband, Dr. Nate
Marshall, are proud first-time parents of a little baby boy,
James Michael Marshall. James Michael came into the world on
Monday, June 22, 2015 at 8:02 pm, weighing in at 6 lb 2 oz and
19.5 inches in height. Christina and Nate are all well and overwhelmed with joy! The extended surgical clan looks forward to
many more creations by Drs. Busuito and Marshall as she continues her training in plastic surgery and he continues his training
in orthopedic surgery. Christina and Nate can be congratulated

Dear Wayne State Surgical Society Alumni and Friends:
The WSSS is alive and well thanks to your support! As your new president, I want to summarize the status of the Society, events we supported last year, and what you can expect this year.
Currently we have 49 Charter-Life members, each of whom have either given or pledged $10,000. There are 55 current members who pay
dues of $200/year. Twenty-two surgeons donated the proceeds of one operation during 2014. This generous support produced a checking
account balance of over $200,000, which will allow us to create an investment fund with a targeted return of 4-5% per annum, with a total
corpus target of $1,000,000 by 2025. We need more participation to reach our goal! If you are a yearly member, consider upgrading to a
life member by donating $10,000 over a maximum of 10 years. Your donation is tax deductible, and we take credit cards! If you haven’t
joined yet, please consider supporting the organization that is all about the general surgery residents at WSU! We also need email addresses for 67 alumni that would enjoy the monthly newsletter. Please look at the missing email list published monthly and help us find your
classmates.
The annual meeting of the WSSS is always on the Tuesday night of the American College of Surgeons week. The cocktail reception is free to
anyone vaguely associated with the Department of Surgery, and the dinner is free for WSSS members, and friends are welcome to eat and
share stories; just let us know you are coming. Last year the meeting was held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, hosted by Dr. Donald
Weaver, Chairman of the Michael and Marian Ilitch Department of Surgery. This year the reception and dinner will be on Tuesday October
6, 2015 in Chicago, location TBD. The WSSS supports the meeting attendance for all the chief residents, so come meet them. You may find
the partner you have been searching for!
The WSSS also supports an annual lectureship on the Wednesday before the Detroit Trauma Symposium. Last year our guest was the worldrenowned Dr. Donald Trunkey, Professor of Surgery at Oregon Health and Science University, and his lecture about his life in surgery resonated with all in attendance. This year our guest lecturer will be Dr. Ronald Maier, Professor of Trauma Surgery at the University of Washington. Dr. Maier, a previous Scudder Orator, will present a lecture entitled “A Century of Progress in Trauma Resuscitation” on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at 8am in the Kresge Auditorium of Harper Hospital. The morbidity and mortality conference precedes the lecture
so plan to attend both!
The Detroit Trauma Symposium is the oldest trauma meeting in the country, and this year will be on Thursday and Friday November 5-6,
2015. This free conference for WSSS members features cutting-edge didactic and interactive lectures by world experts, and offers hands-on
breakout sessions as well. Just think, 16 CME hours for free! If you haven’t been back to Detroit in the last several years, you owe it to yourself to witness the vibrant atmosphere around WSU.

WAYNE STATE SURGICAL SOCIETY
The Wayne State Surgical Society (WSSS) was established during the tenure of Dr. Walt as the
chairman of the Department of Surgery. WSSS was designed to create closer contact between
the current faculty and residents with the former resident members in order to create a living
family of all of the WSU Department of Surgery. The WSSS also supports department activities.
Charter/Life Membership in the WSSS is attained by a donation of $1,000 per year for ten years
or $10,000 prior to ten years. Annual membership is attained by a donation of $200 per year.
WSSS supports a visiting lecturer each fall and co-sponsors the annual reception of the department at the annual meeting of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Mark A. Herman
(WSU/GS/1994/2001) passed the baton of presidency to Dr. Randall W. Smith (WSU/GS
1981/86) at the WSSS Gathering during the American College of Surgeons meeting in October
2014. Members of the WSSS are listed on the next page. Dr. Smith hopes that all former residents will become lifetime members of the WSSS and participate in the annual sponsored lectureship and the annual reunion at the American College of Surgeons meeting.

AN OPERATION A YEAR FOR WSU

The WSU department of Surgery has instituted a new group of alumni who are remembering their training by donating the proceeds of one operation a year to the department. Those who join this new effort will be recognized herein as annual contributors.
