The reality is that owning a Dog is about making a commitment to another living being. For many Dogs though, sadly, those they thought were family, abandon them when they’re unwell or in their senior years. This issue is dedicated to Christine Humphrey (co founder of Pounds Rounds) who dedicated her life to saving Dogs from Death Row & to Soldier, who was abandoned after a relationship breakup, became a stray and was eventually impounded, throughout his ordeal, he was brave, loving, forgiving and he was (just a Dog). Behaviour Consultant Presented Now it’s believed man’s best friend is able to protect women from Ovarian Cancer, a disease that’s incredibly hard to detect. Dogs can now help save women from one of the deadliest types of cancer having learned to scent the chemicals found in ovarian cancer tissue and blood. Researchers say these dogs have a 99 per cent accuracy rate. Word has it that the companies behind this research want to refine the technology to replicate the Dogs nose and develop an electronic one! Amazingly, the Dog’s sense of smell is 100,000 times more sensitive than that of a human’s. Researchers say an electronic nose will be available within the next 3 years. What we ask ourselves is why? when we 8 www.woofmag.com.au have the greatest natural gift to humanity would we invest millions of dollars in replicating something that has already proven to be 99 percent acurate? Dogs find their place in Aged Care Homes, Hospitals and continue to assist with numerous mental health issues and in the rehabilitation of so many lost souls. How comfortable and connected teenagers have become with contraband & the accompanying bad attitude. It is however your responsibility to ask the questions and ultimately make those important decisions to safegaurd your Dog. The following is an exert of information from the Australian Veterinary Associations website which should answer most if not all of your questions. What are the ‘core vaccines’? done without compromising the animal’s immunity to disease. The scientific sources quoted in the AVA position statement outline the available evidence that supports extended duration of immunity for the core vaccines. In summary, improvements to vaccines have increased their effectiveness, and new studies have indicated that immunity lasts longer than previously thought. In making the change to triennial core vaccinations, Australia follows the veterinary profession in other developed countries. Most universities have been teaching veterinary students triennial core vaccination for several years. The American Animal Hospital Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Feline Practitioners, the New Zealand Veterinary Association, the British Veterinary Association and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (among others) have all moved away from standard annual protocols in favour of a tailored approach that takes individual factors into consideration. Won’t we see an increase in diseases such as parvovirus in less vaccinated populations? This does not appear to have happened in other countries when vaccination protocols have been changed. In its messages to the public, the AVA is emphasising the need for more puppies and kittens to be vaccinated to make sure that as many adult animals as possible are protected. The core vaccines described in the WSAVA Guidelines for the vaccination of Dogs and cats are those appropriate for Dogs and cats regardless of where in the world they live. There has been much talk about Titre Testing in Australia recently, Titre Testing provides Dog owners with the opportunity to test for immunity to the core infectious diseases. (Titre Testing involves taking a sample of blood and getting it analysed for antibodies to infectious diseases), which will either show your Dog needing or not needing re vaccination. Dog Owners are able to request Titre Testing which is a proven, reliable immunity measure in Dogs for the core infectious diseases (Canine Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus). You will be pleased to know that many Vets in particular Holistic Vets, provide 14 www.woofmag.com.au In Australia, core vaccines for Dogs are for canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus and canine parvovirus. There are non-core vaccines for other diseases. Some of these will vary depending on location. When making a decision about vaccination you should should consider each animal on a case-by-case basis, the disease status in the area and other factors such as breed, nutrition and age. Lifestyle risks for the individual will also play a part Leanne Wilson Why was the change necessary? While adverse reactions to vaccines are not widespread, there is a consensus in the scientific community that veterinarians should aim to reduce the vaccine load on individual animals to minimise any risks of adverse reactions, if this can be April/May 2015 WOOF MAG 15 SOMETIMES A RAW DEAL IS THE BEST DEAL WRITTEN BY VETS ALL NATURAL 40 million years ago, Caveman and Dog formed a friendship, forged by a symbiotic relationship of combined hunting skills, early warning of danger, protection, companionship, and the cleaning up of all man’s food scraps and waste. Almost 40 years ago, the first commercial cooked Dog and cat foods were released onto the Australian market and with that, began the slow and insidious decline in the health of modern day Dogs and cats not seen in previous decades. Dogs and cats were presenting at Vet Clinics with skin diseases, allergies, arthritis, teeth and gum problems, ear infections, anal gland impactions, urinary tract diseases and a huge range of degenerative diseases and cancers previously only thought to occur in man. “My balanced diets directly improve health and longevity.” Dr Bruce Syme, believes that cooked and processed foods have contributed to many of these health problems, and has developed a range of natural, raw foods and food supplements that are designed to provide a diet that mimics “Mother Nature’s” recipe. The Vets All Natural range is the result of years of trials, research and investigation. The cornerstone product, Complete Mix, is a combination of air dried cereal grains, mixed vegetables, garlic, brewer’s yeast, kelp, lecithin, calcium and vitamin C. It is designed to combine with good quality raw meat, preferably kangaroo, to produce a completely natural, preservative and additive free, scientifically balanced, raw food diet. Just like us, sometimes dogs find new things hard to understand. As teachers we need to set the scene for success when deciding to train a new behaviour. So what do we need to do to make sure we have the best chance of success and our dogs are happy to cooperate with us? Have a plan before you start; be clear about what it is you want to achieve, where are you going to train, what treats are you going to use and what steps are you going to use to achieve the final result. Remember new things can be hard to understand so make sure your training steps are small to start. Give small amounts of information and let the dog feel confident with that step then move on to the next. Keep the training sessions short; overloading the dog, especially in the early stages, can lead to the dog shutting down. This does not necessarily mean the dog is no longer hungry or bored or any other human emotion we want to use to describe the turning away. You may have just given it more information than it can deal with at this time. Go back to the title of the training tip and remember that new things can be hard to learn. and not starting to look around when there is no obvious distraction. All animals learn in the same way as people, in logical steps. When teaching animals make sure they master one step and then move onto the next step. Bio of Kerrie Haynes-Lovell Trainer Kerrie has been living and working with animals all her life. In her professional life she has worked as a senior veterinary nurse, a zookeeper, marine mammal trainer, and teacher. She is currently semi-retired; teaching Captive Animals (zoo keeping) for TAFE and several competencies for the Companion Animals course for Delta Australia and consulting for various zoos in Australia and overseas. She lives in country NSW with two rescue greyhounds, a deaf French bulldog, and two rescue mutts, a cat, horses and a mule, two llamas and a very understanding husband. Keep sessions; short, positive and watch to make sure your dog is still paying attention 20 www.woofmag.com.au April/May 2015 WOOF MAG 21 CANINE ASTROLOGY... THE CANCER DOG CANINE ASTROLOGY... April/May 2015 WOOF MAG 23 HACHI IN MELBOURNE FIRST IN TOKYO, THEN NEW YORK, NOW MELBOURNE - HACHI, THE WORLD-LEADING FASHION AND ACCESSORIES BRAND FOR DOGS, IS COMING TO TOWN. Opening to the public on 24th April at Shop 3, 286 Toorak Road South Yarra, and through its website www.hachi-melbourne.com.au Hachi will introduce a wide range of the latest kinds of accessory products for dogs: jackets, leads, carry bags, collars, pushers, and whatever else imaginable that can smarten up the pooch in a doting dog lover’s life. Owned and operated by Tokyoite Takashi Fujita, now residing with his family in Melbourne, Hachi brings together the best quality and latest designs in lifestyle products for dogs. An increasing trend is for dog owners to seek out products that enhance the personality and individuality of their pets, while adding creature comforts to the canine lifestyle. More than any other retail outlet, Hachi caters to this trend. All its products, made in Japan, are of the best quality, but are also practical, well-designed, attractive and, in many cases, downright cute. As interesting as the Hachi product range, also is the story behind the choice of this name for this kind of business. Hachiko was an Akita breed of dog born in Tokyo in 1923. At the age of one Hachiko was acquired by Professor Hidesamuro Ueno of the University of Tokyo. The loving pet would farewell its master at the front gate each morning, and watch as the Professor walked to the local station for the trip to work. Hachiko soon learned the location of the station, and began the habit of walking 24 www.woofmag.com.au there to greet the train carrying his master home at night. Less than a year later, in 1925, the Professor unexpectedly died whilst at work, yet the loyal Hachiko maintained its practice of going to the station every evening in the forlorn hope of greeting and walking home with the Professor. This practice continued for eleven years, until the dog’s death. Over time the story became known in the area, and eventually gained broader coverage, the dog eventually becoming a national hero, now immortalised by a statue of dog and master outside the station. Hollywood also became enamoured with loyal Hachi, producing the film Hachi a dog’s tale starring Richard Gere. Whilst the extensive Hachi range conveys the upmarket image that has made it a success in Tokyo and New York, its driving force, Takashi Fujita, is an experienced business operator and entrepreneur, with proven success in picking a social tend and turning it into a business opportunity. However it wasn’t business that brought him and his family to Australia, rather the cultural pursuits of his two children. Yet Takashi was quick to size up the pet products sector in Melbourne, and see an opening for the Hachi range. He hit the ground running when the family arrived and threw his considerable energy and acumen into carving out a unique niche in the ever-expanding pet products sector. Through Hachi, Australia is about to be introduced to the latest and best in dog accessories. SOLDIERS STORY A TRUE STORY WRITTEN BY A WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING, ABOUT A VERY SPECIAL DOG. Do you believe in Kismet? On Facebook one day, completely by accident, I happened across a picture of a very sad Dog in a very sad set of circumstances. His name was Soldier and he was a senior ‘owner surrender’ at one of the biggest pounds in NSW. Soldier was not only abandoned in his twilight years but he was also terminal with lung and bone cancer. Adding to his problems, he also had a massive tumour on his hock plus other evident melanomas on his skinny body. He was lying on concrete, lost for words, looking into his big sad eyes, I had a lightning bolt strike me, it was sheer unadulterated ‘Love at first sight’. He was beautiful and I knew I had to bring him home. That was the easy part – more involved was the co-operation of the pound plus gorgeous volunteers who pulled out all the stops to bring my boy to me as quickly as possible. 26 www.woofmag.com.au Through a legion of phone calls and emails, the plan came together and “my Dog” was welcomed into my family. He was a big boy, a Ridgeback X Mastiff! He toddled in gently on his front bandy legs and his shaky back ones and went straight out onto the sunny deck to a comfy bed he could now call his own. Luckily, the weather was good as he preferred to be outdoors for the first few nights, and not wanting to miss a minute with him, I slept close. My own three dogs were getting their fair share of Love but knew Soldier would only be with us a short time – they always know – and gave very graciously of my time, their food and toys. Soldier and I talked of many things over the next few days, he hung off my every word and that goofy head started to smile. The light came back in his eyes and from time to time he would place his big paw on my hand as a reassuring gesture if I had a sad moment. We took outings to the beach where Soldier stared in wonder at the sea making little whimpering noises of excitement. We went to another tranquil spot where we watched the cranes and pelicans and children playing in the water. His big heavy head just resting in my lap as he made his happy little sighs. I live on the Northern Beaches in Sydney but that didn’t stop the many volunteers from traveling hours from far afield to visit him here at home. He was having a ball being the centre of attention and soon got the hang of the dreaded selfie pose. We packed a whole life time of memories and Love into the short time I had with this beautiful soul but it became very clear one night that his time was coming to an end as his body was failing him. My wonderful vet was called and on a Sunny Saturday afternoon sitting on the deck he loved, we celebrated Soldier’s new life as he was helped from this world over to the next. So there is a message in this story... I want to raise awareness of the thousands of pets abandoned every year that end up in our pound system. A lot of the time, these are peoples pets that find themselves there because “I’m moving and I cant take him with me” “I don’t have time for her any more” “She was my Mum’s companion for 12 years but Mum died last week and I’m not a dog person”. The list of reasons is endless but each and every one of them is deserving of a second chance at happiness. Soldier brought joy to so many people, even in the short time he was with us, so please, consider adopting a pet from the pound, these dogs are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I would also like to raise awareness of the wonderful people who volunteer their time to spend with the dogs that have been impounded. If you love dogs and have some free time, why not become a volunteer at your local pound? If we all gave a little more time, love and understanding many more pets would make it home and end their days, not in a scary pound, but being loved and nurtured – just like Soldier. If you would like to help in your local area, contact your local pound or shelter, or email [email protected] April/May 2015 WOOF MAG 27 Our Dogs are family and loved by everyone from celebrities to world leaders and everyday people. This is so apt because they were the originally trained to attack bears, bulls and other large dogs. Some claim this dog is a decendant of the Spanish Dogue De Burgos that was brougth to france across the Pyranees, other claim it is the decendant of the Great Tibetan Mastiff, one thing for sure, they are truly magnificent. The Hungarian Vizsla is a stylish pointer which has a history that extends back many centuries. Ancient nobles bred the Vizsla primarily for pointing game, but today it is an allround gundog. The breed first arrived in Australia in 1994 and has become a most loved and sort after breed. Dogue De Bordeaux is a decendant of the Great Molossus of Epirus which is now extinct. Legend has it that Alexander the Great set these great Mastiffs loose on his terrified enemies in the battelfield and Roman Gladiators prized them for their bloody amphitheatre sports, something we would not wish upon any Dog no matter size and stature, it is without doubt a fearless breed, but a gentle giant indeed. What is it and what does it do? SuperHeal is a salve made using three certified organic food ingredients. It was originally created out of desperation to remove a cyst from my dog Mishka’s tail because I didn’t want to put her through the pain of another surgery. Anecdotal evidence relating to dogs, cats, horses, mice, rats and people, suggests that SuperHeal may have beneficial affects when applied to cysts, tumours, melanomas, bacterial and fungal infections, polyps (growth inhibition), solar keratosis, haematomas and some skin growths. 34 www.woofmag.com.au Why is SuperHeal unlike other salves? Salves today all contain at least one chemical. Irrespective of how safe these chemicals may be, there may be legal limitations as to who can purchase them or for how the final product may be promoted. Our product is so safe that it is healthy to consume. SuperHeal is made entirely from certified organic wholefoods and there are no legal restrictions attached to it. The ingredients are readily available to the everyday person without the need for permits or licenses. It has strong antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties and also aids in the healing of wounds. Some people find themselves in situations where surgery is not practical or possible and because SuperHeal is so safe they have nothing to lose by giving it a try. SuperHeal promotes the natural removal of growths so there is less scarring than surgery. YouTube search ‘Dog vs Lump’ to view our before and after videos. We have photographic evidence to suggest that SuperHeal can penetrate deep into the body and engage with unhealthy cells and tissue, causing what is referred to as a ‘satellite effect’. SuperHeal was taken to market with the knowledge that many effective natural remedies are shot down so my intention is to ensure that: • Anyone can make SuperHeal at home from ingredients that will never be banned. In the unlikely event that we close our doors the knowledge will be out there for all to continue to benefit. HOW DO I MAKE SUPERHEAL? Mix these three certified organic ingredients together and bottle in a glass jar to create SuperHeal: • Raw Coconut Oil (virgin cold-pressed) - 1 Part • Turmeric Powder - 1 Part • Lecithin Powder - 1 Part What else will I need? • Powder-free food handling gloves to avoid staining hands. The best way to mix up SuperHeal is with your hands. • Cotton bud to apply SuperHeal. • Bandage and tape or large square waterproof Band-Aids from your pharmacy. Remember, you need to reapply SuperHeal daily. • To avoid an animal trying to get to it, you may wish to purchase a plastic cone from your vet (the same ones used when a dog has been desexed). April/May 2015 WOOF MAG 35 Directions • Apply SuperHeal daily for 7 days. Allow area to air for 24 hours. Re-apply daily for another 2-5 days or until the lump pops or falls off. Keep an eye on the wound and ensure it does not get infected. • Continuing to apply SuperHeal will aid in the healing of the wound and prevent infection. • We have had reports of SuperHeal working without bandaging but it is highly recommended that you stick to our method. Storage Although SuperHeal has natural properties that give it a long shelf life, it is best to keep refrigerated to avoid separation. Warning SuperHeal contains turmeric which stains everything it comes in contact with. Please keep the area covered well to avoid staining your home. Disclaimer Prevention is better than cure and diet is everything. Please consult your doctor or vet before using SuperHeal. I make no claims that this will cure you or your animals in any way shape or form. We were pleased with the results and we sincerely hope you will be too. Being around Dogs allows children to experience natural feelings of joy and assists hyperactive children with attentitiveness and gives them a sense of serenity which significantly reduces anxiety, depression, frustration and issues of self worth. Social companionship with Dogs stimulates the release of opioids, psychoative chemicals that relieve pain and promote pleasureable feelings, a much better way to treat these types of issues, Dogs are a gift to humanity. Many of these disorders in children stem from our environment, the lack of balance in today’s modern families, the constant pressures of self image and self worth, broken families and a disposable attitude towards life. We live in a world where we need to be more tolerant, more patient and empathetic to each other, more forgiving and less judgemental. This fix it quick society is constantly suggesting that we need to look, be or act a certain way which only contributes to a feeling of lack or doubt in the growing minds of children. Dogs and animals in general are known to aid in the healing process, they love us unconditionally and can bond with us in an instant and, they provide a reliable source of unconditional love. Treating children with chemicals often comes with unwanted side effects so if you have a child who is experiencing any of the 38 www.woofmag.com.au above, before you go down that path you might consider a lifestyle change. All of these symptoms are indicative of the need for a change and are sure signs we need to go back to nature, step aside and smell the roses. Its time to remember everything that Grandma told us. Children these days are burdened with a society that doesnt really support family life and many children are growing up without the stablity of a Mum and Dad, they are longing for the yin and yang balance of life that is paramount in the developmental stages of any childs life. The addition of a Dog into the family unit will help bring about harmony and balance. They are a wonderful outlet for children, can be their confidant, their friend and a great protector. The Dog will also encourage children to be physically active, in todays modern society, too many children are spending too much time alone indoors with technology. This is completely unnatural and unhealthy for growing human beings. If you have a child who is struggling with any of these issues, consider introducing a family Dog, they will absorb the unseen, give unconditional love and soothe even the most distressed human beings. We have known forever that Dogs bring comfort and joy to mankind. They truly are Mans Best Friend.
