From Our Pastor:
Grace and peace to you from Almighty God and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
“We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and
Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ” ( 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3).
These words are addressed to the Thessalonians by the apostle Paul. This first letter is one of thanksgiving and
encouragement to the faith community. Paul is thankful because the Thessalonians are persevering in faith despite
persecutions. Paul encourages them to love each other: See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good
to one another and to all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances: for this is the will of God
in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 4:15-18).
Amidst these trying times we need to be reminded of who we are as people of God. The ways of the world can cave in
around us, and if we are not mindful we can become accustomed to living out a dog eat dog world. The light of hope can
burn dimly if we lose focus and take our eyes off God. The season of Advent reminds us that we have a hope and love that
are steadfast and sure, because our faith is in the One who takes away the sin of the world. This One provides blessed
assurance that we are claimed and loved by God. No darkness can overcome the light that shines so brilliantly in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
Life can be chaotic and unstable. The tragedy in Mumbai and the economic hardships facing our nation and world attest to
this. None of us are immune to hardships. But hardships do not define us, Christ does. And through Christ’s love we can
meet the challenges life presents by encouraging and supporting each other, and giving thanks to God for the radical grace
that is lavishly bestowed upon us. We need to be reminded of this grace again and again. This grace flows in the waters of
baptism, this grace provides spiritual nourishment in the body and blood of our Lord, this grace reveals God’s will and way
for our lives through God’s Holy Word and the breadth of the Holy Spirit. This grace sustains when we demonstrate our love
for each other. This grace allows us to respond in creative ways to do life!
We have seen life unfold this past year. God continues to add to our fellowship, the Emmanuel Community Farm has
strengthened church and community, and we continue to mature in God’s grace. We continue to move forward in the mission
of the Church. There is much in which to give God thanks and anticipate in the new year. May the joy of our Lord’s coming
always be with you. May Christ’s light shine through and amongst us so others may know the mighty God we serve!
Happy Advent, Merry Christmas, and a blessed New Year!
My love be with you in Christ Jesus, Pastor David

near suburbs had representatives attending;
about 80 people attended.

Note from Linda Zarb
Dear Friends,
My family and I extend our most sincere thanks for
the many cards and outpouring of love and support
following our mother’s death. It was difficult
watching Mom suffer the decline and ravages of
Alzheimer’s over the past 6 years. We are at peace
knowing Mom is in the arms of her heavenly Father
and no longer suffering. We appreciate knowing
Mom is still remembered by her Emmanuel Church
family.

Fellowship Hours
In Bible study, Monday evenings and Wednesday
mornings, we've been studying the Book of Exodus.
God is giving his commandments to the Israelites,
through Moses, at Mt. Sinai. In Exodus 23:16-17,
God says, "You shall observe the festival of harvest,
of the first fruits of your labor, of what you sow in
the field. You shall observe the festival of
We've just finished the harvesting at the Farm. This
has been an experience in sustainable agricultural
methods. It's a shame but Forbes Magazine rated
Detroit one of America's dirtiest cities. The flight of
industry and residents has left 40,000 vacant lots
behind. There has been a loss of big chain grocery
stores. But there is hope out there. Rather than
sitting by and doing nothing, people in
neighborhoods all over the Detroit region are doing
similar work in their neighborhood gardens/farms as
we did this past year in the plot here at Emmanuel.
They are transforming blighted empty lots into green
spaces. There are now over 115 community smallscale farms, 220 family gardens, and 20 school
gardens covering over 30 acres of the city.
Thousands and thousands of pounds of fresh food
are being grown and harvested to feed Detroit's
residents. But also, all over the world--particularly
in Europe--people are noticing what is happening in
Detroit right now with this greening movement.
Many people believe that the most livable cities of
the future will be the ones which incorporate a lot
more green space. The future might very well
include a vision where there is a much less
demarcation between urban and rural. Maybe
Detroit, through the work of various organizations
like the Detroit Agriculture Network, the Greening
of Detroit group, the Earthworks Garden group and
the Urban Gardening Resource Program is building a
city culture more in line with a future people all over
the world are now dreaming about.
A really neat thing to learn in Bible study was that
the Feast of First Fruits was instituted when the
nation of Israel was still wandering in the
wilderness--when they were still without land or
crops. God told them to observe the Feast in faith,
that He was leading them to a land of milk and
honey, a land He was promising them.
It turns out that the fruitcake has a history associated
with the harvest of the Holy Land. The Middle East
overflowed with a variety of dates, citrus fruits and
nuts that were virtually unknown in Northern Europe
until the Crusades. Returning Crusaders brought
Page 6
fruit with them and, because the fruit had to travel so
far, it was dried or candied. The logical way to use it
was to mix it in breads and cakes. Because the fruit
came from the Holy Land harvest, it was also
revered and saved for feast days, particularly
Christmas and Easter.
God has provided our first harvest from the Farm
and we celebrate with thanksgiving this blessing of
land and abundance He has given us to share with so
many in our community. And we are thankful first
of all for His Word in Christ Jesus.
Due to the congregational potluck on December 7th,
the First Sunday Group will not be serving. The
First Sunday Fellowship Hour will begin again on
January 4, 2009, and traditional foods from around
the world which celebrate Epiphany will be served.
The wise men from the East brought gifts to the baby
Jesus, gold, frankincense and myrrh. All three of
these are written about in the book of Exodus as God
is telling his servant, Moses, how the altar and
worship are to be in the promised land. Exodus
30:3 you shall overlay it (the altar) with pure gold,
its top, and its sides all around and its horns; and you
shall make for it a molding of gold all around.
Exodus 30:22 Take the finest spices: of liquid
myrrh...and make of these a sacred anointing oil
blended as by the perfumer; it shall be a holy
anointing oil. Likewise Exodus 30:34 tells us pure
frankincense is to be used by the Israelites to make
an incense holy to the Lord. Frankincense and
myrrh were used for the rite of atonement and
burial. More and more it seems like everywhere a
person looks in the Bible, the whole story is
somehow being told. May all the community enjoy
a very, very blessed Christmas season. Peace,
Sharon

How to Reach Unchurched People in
Your Community
October 4, 2008
-One day seminar sponsored by Acts in
Common and hosted by
Emmanuel/Southfield. Program
designed for pastors and congregational
leaders of our city and first-ring
suburban congregations. Approximately
80 people attended; Emmanuel was
represented by Pastor Maddox, Barb
Klimkowski and Pat Ochodnicky.
-Presented by Dr. Charles Arn, president
of Church Growth, Inc. and a leading
authority in the field of congregational
health, renewal and growth. He has
designed more than a dozen training
courses and seminars in the field of
church growth, written eight books and
numerous articles, all intended to help
church leaders be better stewards of
Christ’s command to “…go and make
disciples.”
Emmanuel’s Voice
the people living in the homes around the
churches than ever before. But they
won’t respond to the old and outdated
methods. The ‘last words’ of a dying
church are “We’ve never done it that
way”. Discussed how
Outreach/Evangelism committees can
sometimes actually decrease growth
because they diminish the feeling of
personal responsibility (“that’s the
committee’s responsibility”) --- we are
each responsible.
-Talked about life cycles of a
congregation: MissionInstitutionalization-Disintegration
The longer a congregation is in existence,
the more it departs from its original
mission.
Typically, 95% of church roles/tasks are
inward-focused “maintenance” activities.
(3) The Christian’s calling is outreach –
to go and make disciples.
-From research, gave statistics on when
and why unchurched people begin
attending a church for the first time and
why they become active and join vs.
leave; studies showed overwhelmingly
that a personal invitation is most
effective, and that newcomers must be
assimilated into the activities and develop
meaningful relationships within the
congregation before they will join. 20%
of governing board should be made up of
new members who have joined within the
past 2 years.
-Intro: The days of opening the doors on
Sunday and seeing the pews fill to
capacity are long gone for most churches,
yet there is a greater spiritual hunger in
-The days of denominational loyalties are
behind us; recommends we develop ‘side
doors’ based on common interests as
points of entry. Ministry-based Outreach
is an intentional commitment to build
Assumptions:
(1) Christ’s purpose was outreach – to
reconcile humanity with God.
(2) The Church’s mission is outreach – to
carry out Christ’s purpose.

meaningful relationships between
members and non-members based on
shared interests. These relationships
become the ‘channel’ through which
God’s love is experienced first-hand, and
a ‘bridge’ over which many ultimately
cross to new faith and church
membership.
Dr. Arn provided a number of resources
and is personally available to brainstorm
ideas.

supplies for local children
Operation: Kid Equip is pleased to
announce a Winter Wear & School Supply
Drive for low-income and poor children in
southeastern Michigan. This winter many
elementary school students in our
communities will walk to school without a
hat or mittens. To top it off, many of the
children and families who struggle to afford
school supplies throughout the year will
need them replenished in January.
Operation: Kid Equip is asking for the
following items in children’s sizes: winter
coats, hats, gloves, mittens, boots and warm
socks. The organization is also seeking
pencils, crayons, markers, rulers, paper and
spiral notebooks. A full list is located on the
organizations website,

school. Regardless of their family’s
financial situation, all children should have
the opportunity for learning and academic
achievement. We are asking the entire
community to please help us collect new
mittens, hats and school supplies for the
children we serve so they can stay warm,
safe and be equipped for school,” said Mike
McFall, co-founder of Operation: Kid
Equip. “There is no limit to what a child can
learn when equipped with the things they
need the most, like school supplies and
warm winter wear.”
Operation: Kid Equip will collect donations
through February 2009 and will distribute
them to local children throughout the winter
season.
The organization is seeking out businesses,
churches and organizations willing to either
be a drop off location for this very special
drive, or to conduct a special collection this
Holiday Season. Those interested in
participating should contact Operation: Kid
