Everyone knows about Recycling, but how can one Reduce and Reuse to make a difference? RE DU CE Reduce and Reuse: The “Other” R’s RECYCLE Or Reuse: to use again Reduce: to make or become less You can help the environment by reducing the amount of material that you buy and throw away. For instance, you can: Buy Items in Bulk. If you buy one large item instead of a number of smaller ones, you will have purchased less packaging and therefore less to throw away. Purchase Only What You Need. This may seem contradictory to “Buy Items In Bulk”, but if the item spoils or becomes outdated, then you will not only be disposing of the packaging, but the product as well. Close The Loop: Reuse is more than just using tin cans for pencil holders. Many items are thrown away before they outlive their usefulness. To prolong the life of usable items, you can: Donate Usable Items Which You No Longer Want to Thrift Stores and Other Charities. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”, so even though you may not want them, someone else may treasure your discarded items. Consider Buying Used Products Instead of New Ones Whenever Practical. The Recycling Guide Listings in this guide has places you can purchase used books, rebuilt automobile parts, and pre-owned furniture. Another reason to Reuse items, is to reduce the use of disposable items. For example, you can: Use Your Travel Mug at Coffee Houses. Many businesses will fill your mug instead of using one of their paper cups and may also give you a discount for it. C L O SE TH E OP Recycle and Buy Recycled. O Recycling is great, but it can only work if there is a demand for recycled products. Buy recycled products whenever possible to allow more materials to be recycled. Instead Of L 9 07 High Desert Guide.indd 9 7/2/07 7:52:57 AM Got Greens? Consider Composting, Grasscycling, and Water-Wise Plants A large part of the waste put into the landfills is green waste, or plant material from your yard and kitchen. By practicing backyard composting or grasscycling, the material never leaves your property and adds valuable nutrients to your yard. Backyard Composting... is speeding up the process of decomposition of plant material. These materials are typically from yard / grass clippings and raw kitchen scraps (from fruits and vegetables). As the material breaks down it eventually turns into compost, the “black gold” of gardeners. The steps to backyard composting involves mixing “greens” which are high in nitrogen, “browns” which are high in carbon, water and air. When these ingredients are combined, beneficial insects and microbes begin the process of breaking down the material. Eventually, the material breaks down into compost. You know when it’s done when you can’t tell what it used to be; it looks like dirt. When mixed into the soil, compost improves soil structure, retains water, balances pH, and adds valuable nutrients. Grasscycling... is the practice of slowing down the growth rate of your lawn and leaving grass clippings on your yard when you mow. These clippings decompose in your lawn and release nutrients back into the soil. Grasscycling eliminates the need to bag and dispose of your clippings, thereby saving you time and energy. Though a “mulching mower” makes this process easier, you can practice Grasscycling with your existing mower. Water-Wise Plants... use less water, require less maintenance, and produce less green waste than lawns. Drought tolerant plants are more than just cactus and succulents. Many varieties are not only Southern California friendly, but also fragrant and colorful, like the California Fuchsia pictured to the left. If you would like to learn more 10 07 High Desert Guide.indd 10 about composting and grasscycling, contact your local recycling coordinator (see page 3) or the High Desert Master Composters at 1-888-URECYCLE. For information on drought tolerant plants, contact your local nursery or visit www.bewaterwise.com. 7/2/07 7:53:04 AM RECYCLING MEANS BUSINESS IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY! Businesses can save money, conserve valuable resources, and help in the effort to divert 50% of waste from the landfill as required by State Law AB 939. A variety of recycling collection services are available to businesses, including residential type “curbside” recycling barrels, dumpsters, or even roll-off containers for large generators. Businesses can recycle clean paper, cardboard, bottles, cans, scrap metal, pallets, and a variety of other scrap items. For information of available services in your area, contact your Recycling Coordinator (see page 3). SBCountyMAX . . . the San Bernardino County Materials Exchange, is a free online classified listing service designed to help businesses, government, and other organizations find markets for materials that would otherwise be thrown away. The concept behind SBCountyMAX is simple: materials discarded by one business can be a resource for another business. SBCountyMAX benefits: It’s Free & It’s Simple To Use! Go to: www.SBCountyMAX.org Once there, you can view the available or wanted materials, or place an ad. For more information, visit or call: www.SBCountyMAX.org 1-800-722-8004 www.CalMAX.org 1-877-520-9703 • Locate new markets for excess materials. • Reduce disposal costs and provide income from previously disposed materials. • Encourage local economic development by assisting start-up businesses to locate free or inexpensive materials. • Support environmental goals by encouraging conservation of resources and saving landfill space. • Assist local communities, as well as local schools, art groups and nonprofit organizations in locating free or inexpensive materials. SBCountyMAX is part of CalMAX, the California Materials Exchange, an on-line and printed listing service provided free by the California Integrated Waste Management Board in partnership with the County of San Bernardino. 11 07 High Desert Guide.indd 11 7/2/07 7:53:10 AM SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL SITES For information about county facilities please call San Bernardino County Solid Waste Management Division at 1-800-722-8004 or go to www.sbcounty.gov/wsd County Owned: Apple Valley Community Collection Center* 13401 Laguna Seca Dr. - Apple Valley Tues, Thurs, and Sat from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Phelan (Sheep Creek) Transfer Station 10130 Buckwheat Rd - Phelan Mon - Sat from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Drop off recyclables:Green & wood waste, mixed recyclables, tires, appliances, metallic discards, concrete, and inerts. On these days, San Bernardino County residents can dispose of and recycle regular household trash and debris at no charge at all San Bernardino County-owned solid waste disposal sites normally open on Saturdays. Many areas organize roadside or public area cleanup events or competitions. This semi-annual event also serves to remind residents to recycle as much as they can, thereby reducing the amount of material they have to take to landfills. Contact your local recycling coordinator to find out what your community is doing for Community Cleanup & Recycling Day. 12 07 High Desert Guide.indd 12 7/2/07 7:53:15 AM
