Artist, designer, entrepreneur, industrialist-in-training, Miriam Dym presents “In Writing.”
Using locally grown, undyed fiber, Dym proposes a brief line of machine-made knitwear: light, warm sweater dresses
and cardigans knit in her signature word repeats. Some phrases, as Dym discovered, work beautifully in repeat — a
few of her favorites are: HOLD ON
and
ON HOLD
HAND OFF
and
OFF HAND
STAY STILL
etc. — there are a few more in the queue!

These phrases take on a certain poignancy when a person puts them on, whether in the form of a snuggly, protective
sweater or a rather exposing, delicate lingerie slip.

As a maker and business person, Miriam has noticed just how tricky it is to make things well and truly local. (For
example, if you were to decide to print fabric in Northern California, how would you go about getting local cloth to
print on? Textile mills are a bit thin on the ground here!) There are, however, a scattering of designers and makers
(such as the wonderful Myrrhia in Oakland) with knitting machines. Can we borrow one? And perhaps someone has
a machine for making filet crochet? Perhaps.
{ fiber
There are wonderful fibers cultivated in California. They come naturally in many colors, ideal for tonal compositions
and patterns. To make a lovely sweater, one might blend sheep wool and fine alpaca. For a filet crochet slip dress,
there is cotton — and natural cotton grows, as Sally Fox has shown, in greens, browns, creams as well as white!

I offering a few variations — colorways, repeat patterns, shapes, fibers — with the idea that some will be winnowed
out in pre-production. One great reason to share designs is to encourage input: which one would you wear? As a
designer, I find that when I explore production decisions, having flexibility in design and product choice grants a
smoother flow!
