This year, Linden High School is excited to announce THE BIG READ. All levels of
Language Arts at Linden High School are required to read The Glass Castle by
Jeanette Walls. Students will read the book and complete a grade-specific packet. The
packet will be distributed to the students prior to summer break. It will also be
available on the district website: http://www.lindenps.org. These packets are due on
THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, September 7, 2016. The packets, along with a test
administered in class, will result in two assessment grades for the first marking period.
Roald Dahl once said, “I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become
comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be
funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.”
School wide Big Reads are designed to foster community discussion about books by
encouraging an entire community to read the same book at the same time. Big Reading
provides a school with a definitive, comprehensive model for developing a crosscurricular, community-wide interest in and knowledge of a particular book.
Limited copies of the book will be available at the Linden Public Library, 31 E. Henry
St. Check www.lindenpl.org for library hours. The book is also available at
Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, on Kindle, and at various on-line sources.
ELLs (English Language Learners): Students exiting the ESL program will be part
of The Big Read. Students who are currently enrolled in the ESL program will
work with their ESL teachers in order to modify materials that are aligned with
their individualized needs and English proficiency levels.
If you have any questions or concerns, or if you have difficulty obtaining a book, you
may contact the Language Arts Supervisor at 908-486-2800.
Have a wonderful summer!
