Obedience & Rally Director of Training Report

We continue to make modifications that improve the use of the expanded training and class area.
So far, most of the comments have been favorable. Beginning with the Winter 2014 Obedience and
Rally Session, the new area will have two good sized rings. We will continue to have a Member’s
Training Ring available all four class nights. Some classes may be changed to a different night or
time to accommodate having one less ring. We have reviewed the adjustments and feel they will
serve our members and future students well. The new class line-up will be posted to the website
and yahoo group.
Our need for instructors and assistants will remain high. We can’t run classes without instructors so
please contact me if you are interested. Remember that teaching or assisting earns you a teaching
voucher, helps fulfill requirements for full membership if you are a TP, and helps towards volunteer
hours for key privileges. If you have never taught before, that is okay. You would begin as an assistant and we will gladly provide any training you might need. Contact me, any training committee
member, or any instructor if you would like to participate. I also periodically need substitute teachers,
sometimes at the last moment. If you are interested in doing this please let me know.
I would like to once again publicly thank everyone that helps with the great Obedience and Rally
program that we have. We use almost 50 instructors and assistants every session. Terry McCarty
manages the phone calls. Richard Eppley handles the website. Corky Andrews is our registrar
and spends a huge amount of time answering class related questions. There is also our DDTC
board and officers and the floor cleaning crew headed up by Roberta Shellabarger. Thank you
everyone for all of your support.
DDTC’s partnership with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton — the S.T.A.R.T. program — is
going well. We meet at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays to help HSD train shelter dogs. This makes the
dogs more adoptable and hopefully will assist in the dog getting to remain in a permanent forever
home. If interested in this very worthwhile program please contact me.

Agility Director of Training Report

I would first like to thank all of the Club members, Dennis and Marybeth Steinke, Vicki Head,
Lynn Luikart, Mina Knox, and Jessica Issenbarger, who have volunteered to instruct the agility
classes. Also, I would like to thank Patty Steele-Scott who has been instructing the BOFA class
to prepare the students for agility classes and for helping me to vacuum the agility floor on Wed.
nights. As we expand we will need more instructors and assistants, which I have already had
some volunteers I am happy to say.
The new space has been wonderful for the agility classes. It has helped to expand the class
schedule and made it easier to make up missed classes.
We would like for anyone interested in doing agility to start with the BOFA class with Patty . Once
they start the beginner classes there is a lot of introduction to the obstacles and teaching the dogs
to jump correctly. The Beg. 2 class continues to expand on working the obstacles and focusing on
handling skills. The Advanced Beg. class starts to do larger sequences to prepare for the Novice
class which is for dogs that are ready for showing.
We will be having our Open/Ex AT 6:45 on Mondays and the Novice class at 7:45 ; our Beg. I
class is on Tues. at 6:45 and Beg. II at 7:45 and Wed. the Advance Beg. class is at 6:45 the
schedule should be posted on the website. Our new session will begin on the week of Jan. 6.
Tracking Director of Training Report

I would like to thank the Board for providing me this opportunity.
As many of you know, I have been a part of the DDTC tracking program for many years, mostly as a
track layer. Our dog JJ was a graduate of the training program (thanks to Roberta) and earned his
TD in a DDTC Tracking Test.
The training class is winding down for this year. We are one DDTC program that takes the winter
months off – while dreaming of a new start in the spring. The dates have not yet been set for the
spring class, but, when the schedule is completed, it will be announced on the website. Anyone is
welcome to sign up.
The 2014 Tracking Test will be held on April 5 & 6. Our Tracking Test has always been popular, with
friendly, helpful volunteers and great food. Entrants come from many surrounding states as well as
Ohio. We’ll be looking for volunteers as Test time approaches.

From KC Artley — Borzoi Clint finished his conformation championship Sept. 15, owner handled all
the way. He won half the needed points for his Grand CH, in five shows since then. Borzoi Rachel
won a four-point major Oct. 13 and earned her Rally Novice title in 3 trials Aug. 10, 11, and 18.
Basenji brags from Becky Blansett and the Ninjas — All shows for Huntsville Alabama. New
Champion: CH SELECT TOMAR'S INCHANTING EPIC (Toffee) finished her championship on
Nov. 7. Toffee lives in Colorado with her co-owner Pilar Heslin. Tracy Leonard DVM & Becky Blansett are co-breeders/owners. CH Epic Select Never Say Goodbye SC (Gillie) was BOB for a fivepoint major towards his Grand Championship on Nov. 10. EPIC'S MAGIC TREAT (Jiffy Pop) had a
great weekend. Jiffy Pop was Best of Winners all four days for a three-point major each day. On
Friday, Nov. 8, Jiffy Pop was Awarded Best In Show Bred By Exhibitor Dog! On Saturday, Nov. 9,
he was awarded Best In Show Puppy! Jiffy Pop now has 14 pts to his Championship. Friday, Nov.
15, saw the arrival of another generation of Basenjis for Epic Basenjis & Select Basenjis. Sissy
(Select H-Crest Insistent) gave birth to five healthy puppies sired by Gillie (CH Epic Select Never Say
Goodbye SC). A red boy, a tri boy and 3 tri girls, all delivered in 2 hr., 15 min. Puppies are doing
great!
From Judy Collopy — Border Collie "Bobbie" finished his Rally Advanced title and his CD in
October.
From Nancy Ellis — At our October Trial, Derby won 1st place all three days in Rally Novice B with
99, 100 , and 100 scores. He is now CH Von Gailingen's Run for the Roses BN, RN.

From Becky Garltic — Riley took 2nd place in the Senior division in dock diving at the Midwest Outdoor Experience at Eastwood lake this past October. It was his first time out and he started in the
Novice division, jumped further, then was in the junior division and out-jumped that division as well.
He then made it to the finals and jumped 17' 11" which actually put him into the Senior Elite division.
In practice Riley jumped over 18'. Dave served as his handler and had a blast as it was his first ribbon also!

From Suzanne Geisler — My daughter, Emily Spyrou, and I bred a litter of Cardigans that were
whelped on Sept. 1, 2012. Her puppy won Best in Sweeps at the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of the
Western Reserve’s Regional Specialty this past August. On the same day he went reserve winner’s
dog from the bred by class (darn it!). There was intense competition and 5 points there. The Western Reserve show is second to the National Specialty in size and quality. The top specials and class
dogs from around the world come to this show. It was a memorable weekend. The dog is KaosRubad The Storm Cometh.
Tami Graham reports: — We had a great weekend at the October DDTC Obedience and Rally
Trials! Tami’s Yellow Labrador Retrievers finished a total of three titles! Maggie (Graham’s Wake
Up Maggie May) got her RN where she scored a 98 on her last leg and took 2nd place! Then on to
Beginner Novice where she got her BN – she got two Second Places and a First Place! Competing
against Maggie in Beginner Novice – Zeus (Graham’s Thunder From Zeus) placed third all three
days and got his BN. They were AWESOME this weekend! Many thanks to all the instructors and
DJ James for their classes, training tips, practice, help and for cheering us on! Not a bad weekend
for a newbie!
Sherri Heizer — My sheltie Taree has been doing well in agility lately now that I have recovered from
my hip surgery. She has gotten her Master excellent, Master excellent jumper, and Excellent fast title
over the last year and is working towards her MACH title. She has 7 double Q’s and 494 pts.
From Rhonda Holzhauer — DDTC's September agility trial was Elvira's first agility trial, and she Q'ed
in Jumpers. Second trial at GCDOC on Oct. 4, she Q'ed in Jumpers and Standard. Her third
trial -- the Golden National on Oct. 21 -- finished our Novice Jumpers title and second place, Q'ed in
Standard, on Oct. 22, finished our Novice Standard title and fourth place. Came home from the
National and showed in Open at our trial on Sunday and got our First Q in Open Standard and second
place 23 seconds under course time. I showed Elvira in Rally Novice at the National on Oct. 23; she
was perfect, but I had a senior moment and messed up a sign. Carl showed her for her Conformation
Assessment and she passed. On Thursday Carl showed Elijah and Elvira in Brace Obedience and
got first place, and on Friday he showed Elvira in Novice B obedience and pulled off fourth place with
very tough competition.
Terry McCarty — Adam finally received his Standard Novice Agility title at our Trial. It was a long
time coming; we struggled with a fright phobia that included judge and spectators.
Mike Scott — At our DDTC October Trial Shiraz (Manitou's Shiraz with Blue Notes, RA CGC) and I
entered our first obedience trials in the beginner novice ring. On Friday we did very well with a First
Place although our heeling needed a little work. On Saturday, we had a 197 going until she decided
that either she was tired of waiting for daddy to walk around the ring and come back, or, as I believe,
she thought the little leaf on the ground in front of her was more interesting and needed to be investi-

gated while waiting for me. Needless to say that was all it took for that dreaded NQ from Dave Mauer. Finally on Sunday she was ready to shine and did a fabulous job with another blue ribbon and a
197.5 score. I am so proud of my little 16-month-old girl. In January we will try to finish that BN title
and will hopefully be ready for some off leash work in Rally Advanced.
Sherry Shafer and Sheltie Dallas earned their first leg towards their CDX with a score of 184 at Dayton's October trial.
UKC CH/AKC GCH Blue Sky Desert Star Orion the Hunter RN (Orion) was Select Dog at the Canaan Dog Club of America National Specialty in Georgia last month. Orion was co-bred and is
co-owned by Denise Gordon and Norma Bennett Woolf. He is also herding instinct certified and
has two legs on his BN title. UKC CH Blue Sky Desert Star Luna Eclipse RN (Luna) had five beautiful black puppies -- 4 females, 1 male -- on October 26. Luna is Orion's litter sister and is owned by
Norma Bennett Woolf and Thomas S. Woolf. Thanks to Denise and the staff at MedVet Cincinnati,
all five puppies are doing fine. (I can't say enough about MedVet ... one of the puppies was born at
the clinic and would have died without the efforts of one of the veterinary technicians on duty that
night. And every breeder should have a friend like Denise as a canine midwife!)

Sue Young — On Saturday, in Columbus, Belgian Tervuren, Tica Triple Playback, at the young age
of 7 months, was Winners Dog for 2 points. On Sunday, also in Columbus, at the Central Ohio
show, he was again Winners Dog and then took Best of Winners for a 4-point major.

Tupperware Fundraiser Results

Our first Tupperware Fundraiser in many years netted the club $262.00. Although this was short of
our goal it is still money brought in to the club. I would like to thank the following people who participated:
Our first place “winner” was Mary Beth Steinke with orders totaling $316.50 before taxes.
KC Artley was next with $295.00 in total orders.
Patty Steele Scott, Kate Stephenson, DJ (Darlene) James, Anne Booten, Renae Thompson,

The Dog Owner’s Poem

Why own a dog?
There’s a danger you know.
You can’t own just one, for the craving will grow.
There’s no doubt they’re addictive, wherein lies the danger.
While living with lots, you’ll grow poorer and stranger.
One dog is no trouble, and two are so funny.
The third one is easy, the fourth ones a honey.
The fifth one delightful, the sixth ones a breeze,
You find you can live in a house full with ease.
So how ‘bout another? Would you really dare?
They’re really quite easy but oh lord the hair!
With dogs on the sofa and dogs on the bed,
and crates in the kitchen, it’s no bother you’ve said.
They’re really no trouble, their manners are great.
What’s one more dog and just one more crate?
The sofa is hairy, the windows are crusty,
The floor is all footprints, the furniture dusty.
The housekeeping suffers, but what do you care?
Who minds a few nose prints and a little more hair?
So let’s keep a puppy, you can always find room,
and a little more time for the dust cloth and broom.
There’s hardly a limit to the dogs you can add,
the thought of a cutback sure makes you sad.
Each one is special, so useful so funny.
The vet, the food bill grows larger you owe more money.
Your folks never visit, few friends come to stay,
except other dog folks, who all live the same way.
Your lawn has now died and your shrubs are dead too.
But your weekends are busy, your off with your crew.
There’s dog food and vitamins, training and shots,
and entries and travel and motels which cost lots.
Is it worth it you wonder? Are you caught in a trap?
Then that favorite dog comes and climbs in your lap.
His look says you’re special and you know that you will
Keep all of the critters in spite of the bill.
Some for showing, some to breed,
some just for loving, they all fill a need.
Winters a hassle, the dogs hate it too.
But they must have their walks though they’re numb and you’re blue.
Late evening is awful, you scream and you shout.
At the dogs on the sofa, who refuse to go out.
The dogs and the dog shows, the travel, the thrills,
The work and the worry, the pressure the bills.
The whole thing is worth it, the dogs are your life.
They’re charming and funny and offset the strife.
Your life-style has changed. Things won’t be the same.
Yes, those dogs are addictive and so is the dog game!

A Note from Terry McCarty
I wish to thank everyone for the prayers, loving and kind thoughts in regard to Fred’s Passing. The
cards and beautiful flowers and for those who were able to come to the viewing… the support was so
appreciated.
Fred was a great man: Husband, Father, Grandfather, and yes, Great Grandfather. He loved to talk,
visit and make friends which he certainly did at Dayton Dog Training. He enjoyed special conversations with Brownie, Doug, and also Roberta.
For quite awhile he and Claudia would scrub the floors on Thursday mornings. They would race to
see who would get to the building first at 5:00 in the morning. Once they almost collided on the driveway. Fred enjoyed answering the phone for the club, encouraging others to bring their furry family
members to class. He spent quite a lot of time on long conversations because he liked people and their
dogs, and, of course he was devoted to our dogs.
Again, thank you so much for the support. We have a great caring club and Special Members—
