TRUST
“In God We Trust” marks the currency of our
nation. It should mark our lives as well. In fact, however, we hesitate to trust others, including God, absolutely. We prefer to hold our trust in reserve, fearful
of being hurt or betrayed. Today’s readings remind
us that Lent is a season of trust—a trust that transforms.
God makes a remarkable promise to Abraham. To receive this promise, all Abraham need do is
trust. Paul tells the Philippians that they too must
trust that they are the beneficiaries of God’s bountiful grace; that they are not citizens of any earthly
kingdom, but citizens of heaven. These two readings
invite us to hear the Gospel account of deep trust—
trust that God will fulfill all promises and that Jesus’
passage will lead to transformation and new life.

CONFIANZA

READINGS AND QUESTION OF THE WEEK FOR February 24, 2013
SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
Gospel: Luke 9:28b-36
Adults: How are your priorities affected by your faith in Jesus Christ?
Children: When you have important choices to make, do you and your family pray to make
the right choice?
2013 SUNDAY CATHOLIC MISSAL FOR YOUNG CATHOLICS
This is an excellent way to share the Sunday readings with your child at home to
prepare for the Mass, and it contains the prayers of the Mass to help guide your child
through worship. In fact, because the Church is on a Three year cycle of readings,
after next Advent, you could save this missal to use in 2016. The cost of the missals
is $1.50 (exact change would be appreciated.)
VATICAN II FIFTY YEARS LATER
This year is the “Year of Faith” but also the fiftieth anniversary of Vatican II. While
all Ecumenical Councils are important, this was our most recent being called by
Pope John XXIII to begin October 11, 1962. It ended in 1965.
This week, I would like to keep this same snippet from Gaudium et Spes 43 because
it is of great importance and needs to be looked at for more than one time. The
document begins by stating that one of the gravest errors of our time is the
dichotomy between the faith which many profess and their day-to-day conduct. The
council exhorted all Christians to integrate their faith into their daily lives. This
document gave the laity a voice, a dignity, a mission to proclaim the teachings of
Jesus Christ to others. To be a voice in the market place. Great strides have been
done in this regard but we still have much room to grow. Reflection question:
Is it difficult for you to speak about Jesus openly to others outside of your family?
What would it take this Lent to be more comfortable sharing your faith with others?
SECOND YEAR PARENT WORKSHOP
Tuesday, March 5th there will be a parent workshop in Renehan hall at 7:00 p.m. The
topic for the evening will be the Mass and the Eucharist. We will also be discussing
the dates for First Communion.

Thanks Buzz
From the time our Religious Education Office was in full swing, which took a little while, Yolanda “Buzzie”
McCray was the secretary and bookkeeper in that office. She came to work each day to open classrooms for
the teachers, keep the books for Religious Education tuition and expenses, make sure the classrooms had pencils, crayons, chalk (we were not yet using white boards) and to generally keep the calm. When the parish secretary, in those days, Marylou Birrell, went on vacation, Buzzie filled in at that office as well.
When she started, she wanted to be of service to her parish. After her beloved husband, Bill died, in 1985, it
became a welcome distraction, a way to fill her days. That’s when I met Buzzie.
We had just moved to Canyon Country in October of 1985. I registered my daughter for R.E. classes. Since we
were “late” coming into the program, we did home-study the first year. The following year, our daughter made
her First Communion and I had begun teaching 6th grade. Buzzie and I became fast friends.
Over the years, the parish had grown tremendously. Buzzie kept working fulltime until the mid-1990’s when
she started slowing down a bit and decided just to work part-time. She eventually got to the point where she
was just coming in Monday mornings to balance the petty cash, and prepare the deposit for the R.E. Office.
She did that job until sometime in 2009. Thirty years.
Now I know there are a lot of people who work at one place for thirty years or more. The difference is, Buzzie
worked for free. She didn’t want a dime.
About a year and a half ago, Buzzie’s niece, who lives in Canada, decided that with Buzzie’s failing memory,
she needed to be close to her. Buzzie’s niece phoned me on Friday, February 8th to let me know Buzzie died in
her sleep. She was 90 years old.
Her Memorial Mass will be at St. Clare’s on Thursday, February 28th at 11:00am. Her ashes will be interred
with her beloved Bill.
Thanks, Buzz.

7:15pm. On First Friday Adoration
lasts throughout the night. Our lives
are so busy, we could all use a little
quiet time with our Lord. Don’t just
squeeze Him in, make your time
with Him a priority.
YOU SHOULD KNOW
We have had problems with people “begging” for
financial assistance after Mass. People, often with
small children, will ask for money to feed their
children (families). Please refer anyone looking for
“help” to the Parish Office. Thank you.
