Mark Steele began working on ‘The History of the Jesuits
and the Arts’ in September, 2013. His sketches for the
painting show a crude map of the world inspired by his
research into the remarkable life of Ignatius of Loyola, who
used painting, sculpture, music, illustration, writing, theatre
and innovative architecture, to spread the Jesuit vision
around the entire globe. His interpretation shows an aerial
perspective which transports the viewer on a journey across
all seven continents along a route that Ignatius began in
Spain and continues to this day at Regis Jesuit and around
the world.
About th e Artist
Mark Steele is a well known Boston sculptor,
painter, illustrator whose award winning work
has earned an international following. His
clients include Accor Hotels, Paris (original
sculptures), New York Times Magazine
(several covers) and Fortune, TIME and Harvard Magazine
(original drawings and paintings). His three-dimensional
work, has been published by Workman Publishing in New
York. Commissions include public work for Dali Restaurant,
Cambridge, Massachusetts, Cuchi Cuchi Restaurant in
Somerville, Massachusetts, as well as numerous private
commissions in the U.S. and internationally. He is a
contributing editor at Harvard Magazine, which has
commissioned original drawings for more than 25 years. He
serves on the Board of the Rocky Mountain College of Art
and Design and teaches at Lesley University College of Art
and Design. His studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
